POLL: When applying for a job how much do you 'up' your salary?

I'm trying to decide what to tell a potential employeer what I make currently and plan to up it a little, but not to a point where it doesn't seem unbelievable.

Please take my poll. TIA:

ETA: make the second one 7-10K. I realize I overlapped. Chat Icon

I was severely underpaid at one job (so much so that nobody would have believed my actual salary had I told them), so I upped my salary by 15,000. I was actually hired at the new company making 25,000 more than the last company!! I don't think they really check...at least they didn't for me. Good luck!

I don't up it at all. I work in Human Resources and we do employment verifications and we verify this information. I have seen too many people falsify information and not get the job.

Really? Hmm..Do most companies check because I was hired at a HUGE cosmetics company and they never figured me out.

I don't either. Plus I think that if you are looking most times it is assumed that you are looking for more money than at your last position. If you were paid fairly at your last job I would still ask for 3% more than your last annual as long as everything else is consistent (travel & commuting expenses, company contribution to health care benefits, etc).

When I interviewed for my current position, I told them the honest amount that I was making at my old job (even though I was underpaid).

Same here - I work in Compensation and have never altered my salary in anyway to an employer - not worth the risk.

I worked for a not-for-profit my first job and was severly underpaid...but it all corrected itself with each job I took after.

I don't get how your old employer's W2 is relevant to your new employer. Do they use it to decide what to pay you? Wouldn't they pay you what you think is fair given your experience and education?

Re: POLL: When applying for a job how much do you 'up' your salary?

I up all the time. Why would one make a lateral move? I have had one employer ask me for W2's and i politely declined the opportunity. I would not want to be part of that corporate culture. I have moved a bit for better jobs and I have realized, if you are good with good refernces you get what you ask for.

Depends on the field. In some fields - finance for instance - they usually check.

In the past when I've been at small companies I lied or was vague about my salary whenever I was asked - I knew they were too small to waste the resources checking. Besides, I wasn't earning or asking for all that much anyway.

At my current company, which is pretty large, I didn't lie. I asked for 5k more than I was making and they wound up giving me 10k more.

It's to prove you actually made what you said. It's also another way to test your integrity. Of course you always want more than you made before. For this job, I got 5k more than I asked for. For my next job I will ask for a % more. In my last job, they also asked me for financial documentation about my previous salary. It's also a way for them to tell how senior or junior you were for certain positions. Sometimes your resume/interviews can paint a different picture and wrapping it up with a salary can show at what level you are really at.

that's just my opinion..

wow...this is making me nervous. I kind of feel like if they want a w2 or paystub that shows they don't trust their employees, no?

we don't ask for the W2 or a paystub but it isn't about trust, IMO.
The company is just doing it due diligence. Same for checking references. Someone can tell you whatever they want in an interview. But you need to make sure you are making a good hire. Everytime a company hires someone, it costs a lot of money- and I am not talking just about the person's salary.
I wouldn't want to work for a company that would hire someone and that didn't check their background.

In all fairness, when they're asking you for a W2 you're NOT an employee yet and haven't built up any trust.

Ditto. I've never lied about my salary. Although I did round up to the next 1k level. I was never questioned about it, but bonuses could also be used to make up the difference.

Actually, I've never lied about anything on my resume. I let it stand on it's own merit.

I don't think companies should be criticized for asking you to prove your salary. Typically there is a legal paragraph at the end, before you sign your name, telling you that they can fire you for lying. And from the poll, it looks like it's a real concern! Chat Icon

I wouldn't be nervous if you have nothing to be nervous about. Some companies do drug testing when you are hired. Some do it randomly. I would rather work for a firm that does background checks..etc..

When you provide references I think they can ask your former HR dept to verify your last salary along with your dates of employment. I could be wrong about that. Maybe some HR people on can verify that.

I agree with all of this. I have never lied, and would never take a chance and lie and risk not being offered the job. I would state the current salary but say I would not make a change for under a 20% (or whatever) increase.

Why should they trust their employees? You seem to feel that it is a given that people lie at interviews.

The most I would do is round up to the nearest 10,000 multiple. Like if I made 57K, say 60K.

B/c companies f people over all the time. As a friend told me, you have to be your own company -- look out for you first, and the company second.
