Would you give out your SSN when applying for a job online?
every now and then I come across a company that requires you to provide your SSN. in this day & age of identity theft, I am leery of giving it out, especially while filling out an online application

Nope.
We aren't even legally allowed to ask that anymore until you are called in for an interview and fill out an "official and confidental" application form.

right?? that is what I thought. I just came across the 2nd company that requires it, and it's for a VERY large company. I don't know what to do

I would only do it if it's a required field and if there's "https://...." in the browser address. The "s" means that it's a secure site. You can also look for a lock in the bottom status bar of your browser.

I would not feel comfortable at all.
I don't think any company would need your SSN unless you were hired, not applying.

there is no lock on the bottom of the site and it is a required field. UGH!

I think the federal government can expect you to put it in an online application. In fact, I believe it is also a requierment on a federal resume. Typically, I would not want to give out that information either though.

glad I'm not alone! I stopped filling in the application. IMO, they have a lot of nerve asking for that info! it was not for a Gov't job.
