i didn't see what the big deal was.
like in the 80's when madonna was humping the stage in a wedding dress singing about being a virgin, everybody's panties were in a bunch. this is what the kids are doing today.
it's art. performance. i don't think it's particularly avant-garde, but it's what i see the kids doing in the clubs these days. come to think of it, they've been doing since i was a club kid in the 90's.
and i think, not sure, but i think she's trying to make that tongue thing, her thing. like in a Gene Simmons sort of way.
it's too bad, cuz her voice is pretty nice. but instead the focus was on shock value.
Her voice SUCKS.
Shes a wh re. Bottom line.

I agree. There is nothing "artsy" about her performance. She looked silly, like a trashy little girl trying SO hard to be edgy and cool. But it wasn't cool or edgy, it just came off as desperate and pathetic. I just think it's a shame that a young girl like this thinks that the only way to get noticed and be relevant is by acting like some dumb whore. There is no respect in that.
People with real talent, which she completely lacks, rely on their skill and craft to be relevant..........they don't have to resort to childish, slutty antics. And if you noticed, nobody in the audience even looked remotely entertained, they were looking at her like she's a moron. She should be embarrassed. Terrible "performance".

I don't think she's a slut. Or him. Shes kinda engaged. Hes married. How you perform on stage is no indicator if your slutty IRL. I think her past image as a goody 2 shoes is what makes this look gross. If she came right out the box like this - like lady gaga, thered be no wholesome image to compare it to. I think it's a shame we have to resort to those kind of performances as being entertainment. But she's not 16 here. I don't like the crotch grabbing. I see it a lot now with some women performers. It's gross IMO and I didnt even like it when Michael Jackson did it. But all in all, I think they push the limits because a) they can and b) this is their target demographic who is used to these icky things. It's MTV awards. Not the Grammys, kwim?
I just would not call her a whore. Nor do I think she's on drugs even if she sings about Molly. I just don't. It's all a sad act to seem "cool" and relevant and tough and grown up ..and it's not even true. That makes it sad. Same goes for justin bieber.
I think they execute the problem with these performances, but they are not the actual problem. They are a symptom of a larger one - where everything has to be pushed to the limit.
I much prefer Selena Gomez and her sex-themed song - but her video where she's covered up and still sexy.
And robin thicke - he was into it from what I could see with his arched back. I don't find him violated or found this was a surprise. Unless he comes out and says it, I don't believe it.
Interesting discussion, nonetheless. It's just sad there's so few role models to kids to look up to in performers. But then I think.. Most here grew up with Courtney love, Madonna, Britney even.. And we all turned OK right? So who knows.

When the camera went to the audience and showed some of the other artists, there was a look of sheer disappointment on their faces. It was like a glass shattering moment.

THAT was NOT artsy...that was plain shock performance. Any Joe Schmo can get onstage and have a bunch of back up dancers running around the stage with oversized teddybear backpacks on and grab themsleves.
Justin Timberlake's performance - was art.
Plus, he actually has a voice - she doesn't.

I didn't watch last night, and just saw the video someone posted. I thought it would be worse to be honest. Her song lyrics are something like "it's my song and I'll do what I want", so her performance matched that. Genius for her because everyone is talking and making her relevant today!
I think Robin Thicke is a pig in general, and he skeeves me. He was in on the whole thing, he probably couldn't find anyone else willing to be so trashy on stage. Foam finger and all! I like his song though, it's quite catchy. LOL.

Okay she looks awful. She might have a flat stomach going for her but that's it. She has a gross saggy asss that cannot pull of a teddy bear leotard or twerking or the ugly nude boy shorts she was wearing. Yuck.
I love the shots of the audience- they look so less than impressed.
Her singing isn't even that good- especially on Blurred Lines.
ETA: And from where I was sitting, Robin Thicke didn't look like he was enjoying himself.

I want to like her....I really do, but last nights performance seriously full-on grossed me out. It was not "art". It was cheap and it was offensive. I still kinda like that song but seriously she needs to get a grip. When you make Courtney Love look like Kate Middleton, you know you've gone to far!

i think artsy refers to someone into art.
and art is up to interpretation.
with that said, it is bad art.
