In a division-wide meeting with his staff later in the morning, Mr. Lack said Mr. Lauer’s involvement with the woman began while they were in Sochi, Russia, for the Winter Olympics in 2014, according to two people briefed on the meeting, and that their involvement continued after they returned to New York.
On Wednesday morning, Ari Wilkenfeld, a civil rights lawyer with the firm Wilkenfeld, Herendeen & Atkinson in Washington, said he represented the woman who made the complaint to NBC, but declined to publicly identify her. In a statement provided to The New York Times, he said:
“My client and I met with representatives from NBC’s Human Resources and Legal Departments at 6 p.m. on Monday for an interview that lasted several hours. Our impression at this point is that NBC acted quickly, as all companies should, when confronted with credible allegations of sexual misconduct in the workplace.

I don't think he would have been fired if it was consensual. Having an affair is not illegal (not saying it is right, but I don't think NBC would have fired him like this over an affair). Sexual harassment is. Big difference.
A company can face fines and worse if they do not do anything to stop sexual harassment. There are no consequences to the company if there is a consensual relationship between 2 co-workers.

If he was her superior, which most likely he was and had influence on how her career would unfold it is harassment no matter if it was seemed to be consensual or not. She may have felt that she had no choice but to continue the relationship due to the consequences she would face if she ended it. Workplace relationships in many companies are frowned upon and must be disclosed to HR immediately so there is no cause for discrimination on either party.

I will never understand what makes men think they can actually get away with this type of stuff. I mean how big of an ego do you have to have? Why on earth would you risk your career, your reputation, your family....it's just insane. I mean, he will still have enough money to count for the rest of his life, but his poor kids have to go to school tomorrow and deal with everyone knowing what happened. How do you live with yourself?

Yup, they could, but I don't think that even matters if your job prohibits sexual relationships with co-workers. It doesn't sound like there are any criminal charges (at this point). It seems he has just violated his companies policies, as per what I read earlier in this thread.
Side note
If Trump can get a job in the White House after all of the sexual misconduct allegations against him, I'm sure Matt Lauer will be able to find another career
