Re: Mass shooting at Las Vegas concert

I would like to ask someone who owns an assault riffle or who thinks the general public should be allowed to...why?
Why do you need that?
What do you plan to do with that?

I want to hear an answer.

Because imo the only reason someone would feel they need something of that caliber is to do a lot of harm in the quickest possible way.

I don't see any legitimate, legal reason for wanting one.

And yet, nothing will ever change.

If Newtown didn't result in change, nothing will.

I respectfully disagree.

I want to make it very clear that I AM NOT SAYING I WANT THIS TO HAPPEN but heaven forbid if there was a mass shooting at some kind of Congressional family event we'd have gun control by the end of the month.

Sadly many in our government need to be personally affected before real change can happen.

There was the shooting at the Congressional baseball game, where actual members of Congress were shot, and nothing happened.

I know, and I thought of that.

I'm talking something bigger.

Again, not something I'd ever wish for.

how much bigger does it need to be? regular people dont need these guns.

It's true. Little, helpless, innocent children were gunned down IN THEIR SCHOOL................a place that should be the next safest place for them to be outside of home. People enjoying a night out at a club. KILLED. For NO reason. People out watching a movie at their local theater. Gunned down like trapped rats. Columbine..............kids just going about their life at school and never got to see another day. And now this. People gathered together for a fun night out and it turns into a mass shooting. So many innocent lives lost. So many families broken. How much worse does it have to get??!!!!

We don't need a "bigger" event because ALL of these were already jaw dropping and horrific and yet................we STILL have countless STUPID Americans who think it's necessary for regular citizens to have access to guns, particularly automatic weapons. We still have STUPID Americans that think just because guns aren't the only way to cause mass casualties we don't need gun laws. It's sickening.

HOW many people have to die at the hands of lunatics before we wake up and get tougher. It makes me sick to think that there are people out there carrying weapons and just waiting for an opportunity to hurt someone. I feel like I am afraid to go anywhere, particularly in crowded places because I don't trust ANYONE anymore. It's SO sad that we're a nation where you have to actually FEAR FOR YOUR LIFE when you're out doing something as simple and innocent as going to school or catching a movie.

This is such an absolute tragedy, I cannot believe how ugly humanity can be sometimes. I hope that ba$tard rots in hell for the what he's done. Worthless, piece of $hit. I only wish he didn't kill himself, it would've been more satisfying to watch him rot in prison and suffer a lonely, painful death.

It's baffling. You want a gun for protection, fine. You want a gun for hunting, fine. You want a gun that is good for nothing but attacking, nope. What's next? I want to but myself a fighter jet? It's just for fun, it's my right to buy it, you can't tell me I can't. It's ridiculous. No one should be able to shoot close to 500 people in a matter of minutes!

Imagine this happened in a smaller town without such an experienced police force. Hundreds more could have been shot. I don't want to see who figures out how to top this. Chat Icon

Nothing will change.

The House is set to vote on two gun bills soon.

One would roll back a decades-old restriction on gun silencers, opening up the market for a device that would make it difficult to detect where gunfire was coming from during a mass shooting. It would also legalize the sale of armor-piercing bullets as long as the manufacturer claims they are made for "sporting purposes."

The other would allow people to carry their legally concealed weapons across state lines into jurisdictions, like New York, that restrict weapons concealment.

Keep an eye on who votes yes.

Wait. They need armor piercing bullets for "sporting purposes"? Because the deer you are hunting are wearing bullet proof vests?
Am I losing my mind???
Really?

Zeldin has already come out defending the first proposal you described. Gotta protect hunter's hearing of course. Not sure about the second but I'd be surprised if he voted against it.

Re: Mass shooting at Las Vegas concert

Paddock had no history of criminality that would raise red flags, police said.

“All of the checks that we have been able to do other than a routine traffic violation here in Nevada and nationwide working with our local FBI partners have been able to find no derogatory history on that individual,” Undersheriff Kevin McMahill said. “It’s one of those really sad, tragic things that a man that’s 64 years old that really had no other reason that we can find at least in his history here to go out and wound that many people.”

Other than keeping guns out of people's hands, how do you even begin to prevent something like this? He wasn't on anyone's radar, for any reason.

If he had a silencer, the death toll would be much higher...

As far as hunter's ear protection, they make tiny foam ear protectors that costs pennies...

I need to do more research as to why these would even be necessary for hunting or if that is BS. It's all just bizarre.

There is NO reason to own one of those weapons.

I have a cousin in Florida who owns multiple assault riffles. The reason is because he can. He is so afraid Democrats will take away his right to own these weapons he keeps buying them. For a lot of these type of gun owners they are often paranoid, live in some crazy type of fear that their 2nd amendment rights under siege.

I'm sick of trying to protect gun owners. I'm sick of the NRA, I'm sick over the STUPID politics.

People are dying, hundreds of them every year because of GUNS. I think it is time to stop with all the bull shit and try to stop some this violence by out lawing these type of weapons, limiting the amount of bullets people can buy and putting mental health in our priorities.

Ok, I agree with you. I don't think ANYONE needs to own an assault rifle. BUT, just removing the guns from the market is not going to fix the underlying issue. That's not going to stop the next angry, bloodthirsty lunatic from building a bomb from materials he got from Home Depot, or someone plowing through a crowd with their legally registered and insured car, going on a stabbing spree with a kitchen knife, etc etc etc etc.

Again, I'M ALL FOR REMOVING THESE GUNS FROM THE HANDS OF EVERYONE. But the problem is that our society is broken, and I don't see that being fixed. We aren't safe anymore, not because of the guns, but because of the people.

I 1000000000% agree.

I hope I am being clear.

I'm not saying we SHOULD have a bigger event.

It should take ZERO tragedies to understand the simple truth that common sense guns laws are necessary for any civilized society.

NOTHING should have to happen.

ITA. That's why most of the recent attacks have been with vehicles. Vehicles will always be readily available to anyone, and you can't prevent a vehicle from running over a large group of people.

I don't see any solution to this within our lifetimes. Regulations and "safety" restrictions (metal detectors, cement barriers, computer facial recognition cameras, etc) won't prevent things like this, or vehicle attacks.

Re: Mass shooting at Las Vegas concert

if you think nothing will ever change and your disgusted by all this... let me add this disturbing detail.

after every mass shooting the stock for companies that manufacture and sell these weapons ALWAYS GOES UP.

a few companies whose stocks were down on friday are now up between 2% and 5%.

i heard this on NPR on my way in to work, this morning.

disgusting.

my heart breaks for those people.

Zeldin is trash. He would support a bill that sends his own kids down the river if he could make a nickel off it. Same for King. I haven't heard either denounce this terror attack (but I may just have not seen it yet).

I'm so sick of thoughts and prayers.
I'm so sick of Facebook.
Change your profile picture to put some bullshitt banner over it to say prayers for....insert whatever city is the latest tragedy. Update your status to say "thoughts and prayers" "What is going on in this world?" "wow the world has gone crazy" And then put one of those cool facebook status backgrounds on it to really drive home the point.
What a good fuking humanitarian you are with your facebook thoughts and prayers and status update.
Once it's on social media, your job is done right?
It just keeps on going.
Nothing changes.
But at least we have all the people on Facebook- the most important thing in society- with their thoughts and prayers
