Listen to what happened to us @ Macy's last night...

Warning: this is an ordeal...

I had an aggravating experience last night at Macy's. DH and I were doing Christmas shopping with our 25% off coupons. The coupon doesn't start until Wednesday but they let you do "pre-sale" where you buy it and then just pick it up that day.

We were passing through the China section on our way out and spotted Lenox ornaments - decided to buy a few cute ones for our tree (what a mistake!). We went up with several ornaments. I explained we wanted to do the pre-sale (I had already bought other stuff in other Departments - it is not problem, standard practice). The lady was VERY old and VERY easily confused. She ignored the coupon I handed her and just said she had the scan to do it. Well, the receipt came out and it only took off 10%. So, I said that the coupon I have is for 25% (Friends and Family) and she said, "well that is for Wednesday". I said "I know, that's why I explained that I'll be doing the PRESALE".

Then, she states that it WAS done right - that 10% taken off of each item actually adds up to 25%. DH and I both looked at each other and said, "there's no way that is correct". And she insisted - so, finally DH had to tell her that he TEACHES Math (and Science but whatever) and there is no way that is Mathematically true. She says "well, here this is the math and it is true". We were like OMG!!! We had to keep on her and finally, she agreed to void it out and re-do it...

So, she "voids" it out which she had to ask how to do. Then, she re-rings us for the items. This has already taken 15 minutes and DH and I had an appointment at 6:30 to make. Anywho, she re-rings it and takes the 25% off. When she goes to print the receipt (she had to replace the tape because it was running low) the receipt didn't print because she loaded the tape incorrectly. Chat Icon This was all for ornaments mind you!! I keep saying I need my receipt for the Wednesday pick-up (and because I think she screwed up again)...

At this point, we don't know what to do. I have to come back on Wednesday to pick these up - how am I going to show I paid for them? I asked her to print out a duplicate copy of the receipt (I know they can do this) but she doesn't know how... SO SHE GOES TO RING US UP A THIRD TIME!!! DH was like, "wait, wait - we were already charged!" Chat Icon She and another apologetic associate promised we'd be fine with no receipt for the pick-up - they put my name on it, etc.

We leave because we had to go. The void, she said, will not show up because it won't post until the day the sale starts -- that is how presales work, she says. Other associates that night told us the same thing (because we bought a bunch of other things) so we knew this was the norm.

Today, DH checks the Debit Bank Statement -- THREE CHARGES of the amount we spent on the freaking ornaments. Chat Icon

I feel awful for being upset because she is so old but she should NOT be working there. I called today about this and WHO answers the phone? HER. Chat Icon So, I asked for a Manager.

The Manager looked into it and I explained that this entire ordeal took over THIRTY FIVE MINUTES in the store. Manager stated that she'd be there on Wednesday when we pick up the things and will credit us the amount that we were over-charged. HOW she managed to charge us three times I'll never know.

I hope those are some really great ornaments. Stuff like that always happens to me too, just think you will always remember last night when you take the ornaments out every year.

Honestly I understand why you are so frustrated, it sounds crazy and frustrating, but I don't think age has anything to do with it , unless she was 80 or something Chat Icon) it could have been younger a person , but could have made the same mistake. My constant complain past year or 2 is that most SALES PEOPLE ARE HORRIBLE , almost every time I go shopping there is some kind of issue and it makes me wonder HOW DO THESE PEOPLE GET JOBS? At least you got it sorted out and your account will be credited. Honestly, call me insensitive... I don't care how old you are, if you can't do your job, you shouldn't have it. Plain and simple. Chat Icon I have encountered too many experiences like these to be sympathetic towards them anymore!!

In general the whole PRESALE thing never made sense to me. If they are going to sell it...SELL IT! Why go back and P/U the same BS you purchased. If they didnt have enough to sell the first day, then hand out rain checks BUT sell the friggin item...its there. How frustrating!Chat Icon

I completely agree....... We presale things all the time and are also frequent mall-goers ... so it doesn't impact as too much since we know we will be back.. but I agree it's dumb!

Maybe they do it to get you back in the store to shop around some more when you pick up your original purchase. DH and I totally do that..... we'll presale something, go the day of the sale to pick it up, and end up leaving with twice the amount we bought the first time! Chat Icon

You know what's cool about all of it? You will have a story to tell forever. Every year when you look at your tree you will remember this time with DH and your Macy's experience. I'm sure it will be something that you guys will talk about every year at Christmas which in a way will be a nice memory for you.

But yeah, some sales associatesChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Sadly this does not surprise me in the least!

I barely shopped there when I worked for them and got a nice discount (at least I got one at bloomies too- ok maybe that was not a good thing ;)

I would just ask for a manager on wednesday...and bring a print out of all the charges!

She had to literally be in her mid 80's.

I totally agree with you about the lack of Customer Service and having people be properly trained -- I've witnessed that myself. But this woman reminded me of my Grandfather -- forgetting what was said two SECONDS prior. Things like that. I mean, DH kept saying he couldn't believe she was still working at her age.

Re: Listen to what happened to us @ Macy's last night...

I've had a similar ordeal like that last year at Macys- only we weren't using coupons- we were using Visa giftcards.

What an ordeal THAT was!

Problem is, they hire these associates just for the holidays & they aren't properly trained!!

Sorry you had to deal with that. I have a very short fuse when it comes to things like that. I would have totally just left & stormed out. (But thats me)....Chat Icon

ETS.. The presale concept has the be the dumbest & smartest thing Macys can do. Just think about it. You use your presale coupon to make purchases today. You pick up your packages on the next visit & end up buying more stuff since you are there. Thats clever marketing. They got you to come in the store twice.

Was this in Roosevelt Field by any chance? I always seem to have a problem when I go to that one, and always seem to get the same guy who screws up! I really should start shopping at another Macys!

This was at Smith Haven where I typically have problems too.

I find that Walt Whitman is the best in terms of service, the store being clean, etc. I mean, the main problem is that Macy's just isn't what it used to be. I find myself going out of my way to go to Bloomies, Saks, or Lord & Taylor instead.

I don't care if she is the oldest woman alive, if she took that long to ring up a few ornaments I would have lost my friggin mind. I have spent what feels like many HOURS of my life waiting at checkout registers with associates who don't seem to have half a clue.

AND THEN to find out you were charged THREE times!!! What if you needed that money in your account and were hit with overdraft fees because of it? (I know it wasn't a HUGE purchase, but still)

This story makes me so mad. Sorry for the rant. Chat Icon

The part that cracked me up was when you called today and she answered the phone. I don't even know why I find that part so funny but I literally LOL'd

I would have found it very hard to get mad at her (frustrated yes) but I guess Macy's is not getting many people coming in looking for holiday work.

Re: Listen to what happened to us @ Macy's last night...

First of all its a PIA dealing with macys and coupons.

I worked for macys during the holiday and they give you a crash course then drop you in with very little supervision. Typically you scan the coupon and if it takes your set if not then what I did is void the transaction (returns are easy) and then if no manager was around to change the percentage (most associates are not allowed to do this) I would explain I simply can't adjust a price on the fly and the customer would be angry yell at me and walk away. As a customer it stinks, seriously those coupons BLOW because they don't accept very much, as a sales assoc it stinks because its not you, your battling a ancient sales register, coupons that are cryptic and cranky customers.

For the OP anyone who has this issues, should take their purchase after the second void or a lost confused associate and go to customer service, jewelery or shoes (they always have managers there and their seasoned employees)

I think I had the same assoc once - only she was working in the socks/scarves department.

My mom bought me some stuff but forgot her coupon. The cashier told her that she could bring her RECEIPT to ANY register in ANY store with the coupon and they would adjust the price.

I went to the first register - the woman says, do you have the items - no I explained what was told me to me.
She says, we can't return it without the items. I said I just want a price adjustment.

Went back and forth a few times, called the manager, finally the manager came and said, you can absolutely do that - I've shown you before. Plus, the items were on more of a sale that day so I got the increase sale discount and the coupon.Chat Icon

Ya know, I am really sick of retail employees this year. Don't they know their jobs are on the line in this economy? I give you lots of credit for dealing with all that! I probably would have just walked out at some point.

Thank you for posting this. Even though I've never worked at Macy's, I got to see both sides of the story. It further solidifies my reasons for believing that Macy's blows, period. WHY do you make your customers use coupons that can be complicated to process?? Especially when those coupons are LIES because my husband worked in retail and told me that at this time of year, when the store is "closed" it's actually open with employees inside who are re-ticketing items to higher prices! In walks skads of customers during the holiday season with their 25%-off coupons salivating for a sale, paying for their marked up items with their 22.99% Macy's credit card and not paying off the balance (probably, in most cases).

The whole scenario is a ripoff and anti-spirit-of-Christmas as far as I'm concerned.
