Kelly you are great...Can I ask .....I am in Lynbrook, is it going to be that much worse in lynbrook as compared to Queens.

My parents are in Howard Beach...I was wondering if it made sense to stay there or just stay home.

Are they on the old side? If they are, Id stay put in Lynbrook. Old side gets SO flooded.

I h onestly dont think it will be a big deal. (ahh dont yell at me! lol). I think we will get a lot of rain..but as far as the other stuff..not really!

PEOPLE ON THE SOUTH SHORE: Flooding is very likely south of mountauk highway. The closer you are to the ocean, the more likely you could be under water. I would not leave precious valuables on your floors or in the basement. If you have albums and grandma's old afghan, move it up.

does anyone know how bad the flooding could be. We rent and have only been living here for about a year. There sump pump in the basement which I know will not work if power goes out.
I live up the block from the Veniatian Shores, while i dont have water directly in my backyard right up the block and around i think is the canal.

we live in what i call an apratment in the shape of a house Chat Icon we have a basement and one floor. Could the first floor flood? Should i not stay there and maybe go somewhere else.

can you tell I am freaking out a little Chat Icon esp. since i have an 8 month old!

ETA: THank you for the updates kelly!Chat Icon

I lived near Venetian Shores during Hurricane Gloria and from what I remember, the roads were all flooded. The house didn't flood but we didn't have a basement.

No way! Wow! We needed it otherwise we weren't allowed to close on the house. Same w/ the people that bought from us. This was in 2004 and 2007, maybe things have changed.

Thanks for such an informative post Chat Icon and even keeping a sense of humor for us nervous ones, love the peanut butter comment Chat Icon

Can I ask your opinion Chat Icon we were planning to drive down to FL leaving super early Saturday, hoping to get INLAND (and not I95 just yet til it blows over)...
on the one hand, Im thinking we're driving right into it, cancel of course !! and then I hear on the radio that the center of the storm will be commack/kings park (which is where I live) so now im thinking we're better off NOT being home !

my husband's being optimistic, im being nervous, the opposite of the usual, LOL.

what's your opinion. How far inland is it definitely safe and out of the line of Irene ?

Sorry that youre bombarded with everyone's questions, and thank you again !

I am sorry. I will never tell someone if they should evacuate or not or where the best place to go is. It is not my expertise.

Iowa. Is that inland enough? Chat Icon

I can't comment right now. Even Rochester, NY is on the western edge of where it could hit. This is a massive storm.

My friend just posted on FB that Channel 12 news said that we will probably get a Tropical Storm but the Weather Channel is saying it's gonna be bad for NJ and NY. So who do you trust? I'm at work so I have no idea what the news teams are saying!!!!

i just wanna cry!

No need to cry. Eat some peanut butter sandwiches and have sex all day.

Believe me, if I was home all day with my husband I would do that. Maybe even cover him in peanut butter. Chat Icon

You know, if I wasn't 4 and a half weeks post-partum THIS would've been my game plan! Chat Icon

Thanks for all the updates Kelly! Chat Icon

Everyone is saying something different AND it hasn't even hit the U.S. yet.
Southwest just put up that you can change your flight because of the storm but I am going to wait it out another day as we really do not know what is going to happen by the time it gets up to us.
I am hoping that everyone changes their flight, the storm is nothing and we are the only ones on our plane Chat Icon

Same as the past few days. Nothing specific will be said til it hits NC. That hit makes all the difference. If she can weaken enough, we are in better shape. (But still not good shape) Trees and power lines will go down. The ground is saturated.

Expect conditions to start to deteriorate Saturday night. Expect Sunday to be crap.

is it just me, or is it continuing to track westward, looking like it will hit between NYC and the boroughs?
