I am hoping we will be able to get out on Sunday morning then as it looks like it is not going to hit us until Sunday afternoon.

Get out of where?

Also, have you seen the size of the hurricane? Crap hits hundreds of miles from the center.

lol!! Long Island

There are no cancellations SO FAR from Southwest. They are concerned right now with VA this weekend. But things could change so I am just keeping a watch on their website.

Unfortunately even if you are flying out Sunday Morning the storm is HUGE. I am predicting that starting in Saturday there are going to be LOTS of flight cancellations all along the east coast in preparation. Most flights follow a similar flight pattern no matter where they are headed. Be prepared to have to postpone your trip. Even today due to Thunderstorms in other airports there are TONS of delays in airports that are not even experiencing the storms yet, just imagine that with hurricanes.

Everyone is urging me to try and book earlier in the day but I don't think that would help. If they cancel, I would be out more money then.
Ugghh....mother nature-lol!!!

Do you know what their policy is with flights that need to be cancelled due to weather. I believe if you flight is cancelled (as long as it wasn't a special type of ticket) you are able to get a refund. As long as you aren't flying out to meet another obligation (as in flying to a cruise port) the only thing you would be out would be the vacation time. It does suck though. Chat Icon

ETA: The entire travel industry is, no doubt, on alert and have processes in place for weather emergencies and I am sure you will get your money back no matter what. You only lose the time.

Thanks. I will have to keep on top of this.

How will you be out money if they cancel? I think they are obligated to credit you, no?

If I change my flight I would have to pay more, no? I remember once I was told I could get an earlier flight and it would be $50/pp.

I'm sure it's different when flights are changed/cancelled because of a hurricane.

Stop arguing over semantics. Is this going to be doomsday? Shouldn't be. Will some people be in a living hell? yes. WIll some people be on here on Monday or Tuesday saying it was all media hype? Yes. We are all in this together. No more b!tching. This is a dangerous situation and the person whose house in completely flooded doesn't want to hear from the person who lost one leaf off their tree. We are all neighbors and we need to check on our neighbors.

I'm going to ask a stupid question..If we run out of water I can take from the 30,000 gallon pool and use for flushing and red neck bathing? LOL

So I only need bottled water for cooking and drinking?

usually after a storm, the water turns green and if you lose power, no filter running, meaning even MORE green.. yuck lol

Unless you have well water, you should be okay Chat Icon

Re: Hurricane Irene-what you need to know (update thursday 11am))

I don't know how many of you have been in a tropical storm or a hurricaine before, so maybe this is a moooooooo pointChat Icon

I think it's important, like Kelly said, to remember that the "hit" is when it should be close to making landfall, that does NOT mean you're in the clear until then. There will be many bands of strong storms, rain, and wind coming on shore before then. This storm is freaking huge and will impact many for many many many miles in the way of travel and how it will effect your life. Kelly is also right right now it's a lot of speculation...Nobody has a clear idea of what will happen, but being prepared, not scared, is the way to go. Having lived through 2 hurricaines and 2 tropical storms it is important to be self sufficient for a few days and if you do not leave during a MAND. Evac know that rescue services many not come for you. They just can't. It's heartbreaking to hear people calling for help and you not being able to go. Just be safe, stay aware, and if you are staying and you know others are as well then keep an eye on eachother.

PEOPLE ON THE SOUTH SHORE: Flooding is very likely south of mountauk highway. The closer you are to the ocean, the more likely you could be under water. I would not leave precious valuables on your floors or in the basement. If you have albums and grandma's old afghan, move it up.

does anyone know how bad the flooding could be. We rent and have only been living here for about a year. There sump pump in the basement which I know will not work if power goes out.
I live up the block from the Veniatian Shores, while i dont have water directly in my backyard right up the block and around i think is the canal.

we live in what i call an apratment in the shape of a house Chat Icon we have a basement and one floor. Could the first floor flood? Should i not stay there and maybe go somewhere else.

can you tell I am freaking out a little Chat Icon esp. since i have an 8 month old!

ETA: THank you for the updates kelly!Chat Icon

Same stuff. Near the water: expect flooding. Lots of rain and wind where you are too. My meteorologist friend up in binghamton daid they are expecting upwards of 5 inches of rain there. And you know how far inland they are? The entire tri state area in on massive alert. Prepare and things should be as good as they can be.

Kelly you are great...Can I ask .....I am in Lynbrook, is it going to be that much worse in lynbrook as compared to Queens.

My parents are in Howard Beach...I was wondering if it made sense to stay there or just stay home.
