Help settle a grammer debate

I had my DS's holiday pic taken on Saturday and I also wound up doing the cards at Buy Buy Baby, a package deal they had. I signed the cards "Love, Tom, Jen and Tommy". My sister told me it should be "Love, Tom, Jen, and Tommy" with a comma after the Jen. The way I learned was that if there is an "and" then no comma...I disagree..what do you think?

Either is acceptable, but I think more people omit the comma. I write both ways--depending on my mood. Chat Icon

Re: Help settle a grammer debate

I use a comma there!

But I am pretty sure both are acceptable!

Re: Help settle a grammer debate

I never used a comma there until my current job and now I use it all the time. I don't think you can go wrong either way.

Re: Help settle a grammer debate

Both ways are actually grammatically correct. Personally, I would have omitted the comma as well.

Ditto.

Also "grammar" not "grammer". Chat Icon Chat Icon I'm sorry, I had to!

Re: Help settle a grammer debate

As others have said, the Oxford comma is not REQUIRED. I only use it in instances where their may be ambiguity. A list of first names on a Christmas card to family and friends is hardly ambiguous and I don't think even the most adamant supporters of the Oxford comma would find it necessary in such a clearly colloquial place.

When I list things there is always a comma on the last name before the "and". The only time I don't do it that way is when my sister, my husband, and I sign a card. So it's "Love, Diana, Lynsie, Linda and Bob" because "Linda and Bob" are a couple so I couple them together. If Bob were a 4th child, I would put "Love, Diana, Lynsie, Linda, and Bob."

Re: Help settle a grammer debate

I never put the comma after the "and" but I also avoid the whole issue on holiday cards by using the ampersand sign - Michal, Jamie & Jordan.

Here's how lame I am...I figured because it's called the OXFORD comma, really smart-sounding British people must use it so I started using it to really impress everyone Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon ...then I came to find out it's not even used in the UK. Chat Icon

ETA: and even though both are considered "acceptable," the REALLY proper way (in this country, at least) is to INCLUDE it. And...I agree with rojerono..

Help settle a grammer debate

You could do both. Both are correct. According to APA rules, you need to use the comma after Jen.
