There's NO chance you'll go back.

You won't need a letter of reference.

Just curious, trying to settle a debate with my brother.

TIA!

Bad idea since you never know if you will ever need a reference or who knows who.

Who knows they may not even want you to stay. The offer is a must.

Agreed 100%. You cannot predict the future and burning bridges is NEVER a good idea.

ITA. Now, they may tell you after you give notice to take less than 2 weeks, but you need to offer 2 weeks first.

Bad idea. It's a small world----u never know who the people at the job may know.

I had 1 job where I got hurt at work, they denied my workman's comp, were complete jerks to me, lied about how much time I had accumulated...I could go on and on........

AND

I still gave them 2 weeks notice (although it pained me to do so).

Even if you hate your job/boss with a passion, ALWAYS be professional and give the 2 weeks notice.

You never want to burn bridges. Mostly because you never know who knows who and where people will work in 2 or 5 years.

Your reputation is your reputation. People have neighbors, friends, etc... and they talk. Someone might say unofficially "oh don't hire her (general "her"), she may quit in 1 year and we would be stuck for coverage without notice because she does not give notice".

Bad bad bad! You never know. My secretary called in "sick" on her last two days of work leaving voicemails knowing I wouldn't be in the office that early and not calling my cell phone. I ended up switching jobs and they needed a new secretary. She was great, but she was late a lot and the way she left just left such a bad taste in my mouth, I couldn't in good faith recommend her. I was concerned if she would do something like that again, it would be a poor reflection on me.

Re: please settle a debate: How bad/wrong is it to not give 2 weeks notice when leaving a job?

I normally would say it's never a good idea, and I am in HR, since you may need a reference. But I had such a bad job once, they mistreated me and so many others I said to hell with them when I quit and did not give 2 weeks notice. I didn't even want to give 1 day notice! But I did. So bottom line, if the job was ok, and you may need a reference in the future, yes, give 2 weeks.

For me it's an ethical issue. Leaving someone in a lurch is unacceptable. In fact if I found out I was hiring someone who left another company in a lurch, I would think twice about the candidate.

I would never do it.

There are jobs (mainly in the finance industry) where you are walked out the door, the day you give notice.

ITA I usually do give notices but I am in a job right now where I am being mistreated so bad, not respected and I am royally underpaid. I dread going in everyday because of the stress. i planned to not give a 2 weeks notice when i leave because they are just not worth it. As I stated yes I gave 2 weeks sometimes longer notices to the other jobs i had because I felt it was right and even if I didn't like my superior i still gave notice just so i had a excellent reference. Every person has a different issue of why they are leaving but I would try and give 2 weeks but in my current position I need to leave pronto once i find something suitable so i am scratching the notice and getting out of there.

Re: please settle a debate: How bad/wrong is it to not give 2 weeks notice when leaving a job?

I HATED my last job and was treated horribly by my boss. When my DH got a job offer out of state, I was SO tempted to just pack a box and walk out. Especially since I was leaving the area and already have great references from other places I worked at much longer.

Still gave my notice (3 weeks) and stuck to it. Also, those last 3 weeks were fine and totally bearable. In fact, it was nice hearing from everyone else what a great job I did (including the president) that it helped alleviate some of the pain my loser boss caused me. I walked in there with a smile on my face everyday since I knew I was leaving soonChat Icon

You may run into old coworkers in a hiring situation at ANOTHER company and they may view you as unprofessional. That would be my only concern.

Re: please settle a debate: How bad/wrong is it to not give 2 weeks notice when leaving a job?

Honestly I think it depends on the situation and the reason for leaving.

In general- no, I don't think it's right. However, there are definitely exceptions to the rule. If you are treated HORRIBLY at your job and then something else suddenly comes up and you want to jump on the opportunity, and it requires you to start right away... I say go for it!

I agree, however, isn't it something, though, that if you are fired, for any reason, THEY don't give you any notice!

I think it's crap that companies aren't bound by the same rules as employees are (they can fire you w/o notice), and technically you are an "at will employee" which means you're not required to give notice. however....i would give 2wks as to not burn a bridge. people remember things like this and even if you think you'll never need them again, you just might. you never know. better safe than sorry.

Re: please settle a debate: How bad/wrong is it to not give 2 weeks notice when leaving a job?

I highly agree with what most posters posted on here about not wanting to burn bridges and giving them 2 weeks. However, I think some situations it is okay because it happened to me.

I was in a horrible, horrible job for 6 months with a horrible, horrible boss. I was losing my mind it was so bad. Finally he did something that ****** me off to no end and knew I could not sit there and take it anymore. I went in on a Monday, told him I was resigning my postion and I was giving him the day for people to come to me with questions/concerns. I also wrote out detailed insturction on some of the projects I was doing at the time.

He then proceeded to call everyone in the whole office (approx 10 people) to his office, called people back from court, and started talking to them with his door open about what a horrible human being I was and how I was so unproffessional. All this while he had me waiting to further discuss the issues I had with him. So I packed up the few things I had remaining and left the office that day.

Best thing I ever did for myself. I gave him 6 months of hard, hard work and all I got was his constant craziness.

I think you need to protect yourself. I got references from other people in that office and it did not affect my ability to land my next job. If you are a hard worker and a good worker and your boss is crazy then I think there is no issue with leaving. Everyone knew what I had been through.
