I was planning to do what I do every year...which is drop two or three pieces of wrapped candy into each bag held out to me...

I would have to touch the candy to put it into any sort of bowl or bag...and I wash my hands like a person should do...so I am not seeing the issue...

Am I missing something here?

In the past, I would hold out a bowl of candy and let the kids pick out a couple of pieces. This year I'm doing bags that will be out on a table so the kids can take one. Yes, I touched the candy to put it into the bags, but I am one person, (who washed my hands before bagging) rather than having many kids rifle through (and breathe over) the bowl. If you will be taking the candy and placing it in each kids bag, it's pretty much the same as doing little bags (as far as I can tell), except that you and each trick or treater will have closer contact (very briefly, but still closer)

This was my reasoning. I'm doing it more for kids and their families but I also have elderly inlaws living with us and they don't feel comfortable opening the door to that many strangers.

Why risk it?

How long will these elderly avoid people? They are ok to live possibly their entire life at home and not interacting with people ever again?

She didn't say they are not ever interacting with ANYONE. She is taking a precaution to avoid interacting with a bunch of strangers coming to the door all day. What's wrong with that?

honestly i have big bowls of candy. It might be stupid, but i might just use a solo cup to scoop the candy out to the kids. This way they're not grabbing into the bowl and I'm not touching their candy each time, per say.

Baggies in a lasagna tray. I’ll refill as it empties.
I wasn’t going to participate, but after a post I made & readings everyone’s replies, I decided to do it this Way in hopes to participate in a covid conscious way

This is what I ended up doing. We had a big tray and I filled it up and will put it outside closer to ToT time.

Why the eff do you care what they do? Are they harming you by not wanting strangers coming up to them? It's their personal choice just like its yours to go out and do what the hell you want. Just because you are ALL about moving on and getting back to "Normal" they are concerned about their health. You don't get to dictate when the right time is for everyone to start this so called living again.

It was wonderful to have a normal Halloween. Handed out candy like every other year and had more kids than usual. Parents were ok with kids picking from bowl or handing to them.

Chat Icon funny because my neighborhood most of the neighbors left tables at the end of the driveways for kids to get their candy.

Only 2 houses actually opened their doors.

My neighborhood was 50/50. Lots of tables outside or bowls on the porch but also lots of people opening doors and handing out candy.
Tons and tons of kids though
Really great day regardless. Chat Icon

I was happy to open the door to the kids today. A bit disappointed because we had only about 20 kiddos. Better than last year when we had only 2 trick or treaters.

We had virtually no one come to our house. Bowl was full when we got home. We went to my sister's where we go every year. Full on Halloween with everyone out. Many just left the candy out. They all got tons of candy, too much. Only one house had a sign that said they weren't participating this year.

The majority of the houses we went to had the candy left outside. A few opened the door and honestly, I thought it was a bit odd. We did come across a few houses with signs they weren’t participating.

I have no idea what went on in my neighborhood. When we got home at 8:30, most of the bags I made were gone, which shocked me. I suppose one kid could have taken a whole bunch.

I swear my Daughter has a 10 lb sack of candy from today. It's insanity. She'll never eat all that in a million years .
I had 3 huge bags of assorted candy and all but about 1/4 of one bag is left tonight.
My neighborhood was madness. It always is for some reason.
Which is good because I don't need a ton of candy left because I'll eat it all.

I just ended up handing it out as normal. a few kids reached in the bowl, but they were being selective & not grubbing around at everytihing.
I was going to use my long tongs, just to keep a little more distance between us but most kids had masks, so for a few seconds it was fine. It was about the same level of interaction as when i get take out and the server hands it off to me.

Some people had tables out-- I think we had about the same # of kids as usual ( about 20-25) & they may have actually been better behaved than some years.

In my co-op you are supposed to get a sign for your door if you want to participate, and the super told me he was surprised at how many people wanted to participate, but I think most people just wanted something close to normal.

The most annoying part was that when I went to buy candy, someone asked if they had any more Bounty paper towels left because it was on sale & there was none out & they brought out a case & he bought THE WHOLE THING!

We got about a 1/3 of the kids we usually get. No interaction on my part. Just left it out for them. No big kids taking it all either this year. Actually allowing the little kids to get some goodies.

Hope everyone had a fun and safe Halloween.

we had several large groups. Part of me wondered if its an unnecessary risk, but I understand why it's important to the kids. IMO those parents who brought their kids today were not as worried about catching COVID. I'm not saying they did have concerns, but the importance to them for their kids to have Halloween and be out with friends and family was important. Most parents were walking close together in a group. Most of the kids wore masks and not one parent had an issue with me using my bare hands to drop the candy in a bag.

I had no issues with passing candy out. I kept my face covered

U can prepare ur immune system all u want but if u never “test” it, how is it possible to keep it working vigorously on a continuous basis? Yes, our defense cells do keep a “memory” of viruses and bacteria so it can react more efficiently and fast next time the same strand sticks around but the cells won’t create that “memory” if the body has never been exposed to them and like I said before one lifetime will never be enough to face the thousands and thousands of germs that exist in this planet.

Our immune systems have evolved over thousands of years. You do not need to "test" your immune system as an adult since you have been exposed to so many pathogens throughout your lifetime. Your T-cells and B-cells know what to do to create a specific immune response.

Even with mask wearing and proper hygiene, we are all still being exposed to pathogens daily so our immune systems are still recognizing pathogens day in and day out unless you are still not leaving your house, which for most of the general public is not the case. Plus, my DS is always outside helping us with yard work and what not. His hands are covered in dirt and he is definitely touching his face with dirty hands.

Also you are correct in saying that if you are never exposed to a specific pathogen, you do not have immunity to it, but specific immunity is caused by an immune response, which most likely means you were sick. If proper hygiene can make it so my family does not sick at all, sign me up!

When we’re sick, we know it because we manifest symptoms which indicates the body is already on the finish line from fighting a foreign pathogen. Immune responses happen all the time but they don’t always end up with symptoms. “Not getting sick at all” would only happen in a perfect world though. But unfortunately catching something will happen no matter what, not much because of the diversity in living organisms that exist in this planet, but because there’s a balance that can’t always be achieved and that can be lack of sun exposure (like in winter months), our resilience slowing down during cold months (because the body needs to conserve its energy more during those months), the type of food we eat during the different seasons, how much sleep we get, deficiency in vitamins and minerals, etc, etc. I don’t see getting sick as something negative (if it happens here and there, NOT if it happens all the time, of course there would be underlying issues if that’s the case), I see it as our immune system having a tune up...getting better at what it does.

Yes, we’re still exposed to pathogens when wearing a mask but much less, while this decrease in exposure is worth noticing, there are other things that concern me more about masks but that’s another pandora box all on its own!

U mentioned ur kid helps u with yard work a lot, that’s awesome and such a great way to be in contact with good microorganisms that can balance our gut flora which is interconnected with our immune system. I wish more people would have the chance to do that.

Same with us. About half the people opened their doors to my little trick or treaters and they got a very decent amount of candy. It filled my heart seeing their little faces light up whenever someone opened their door! Overall it was a good night with the exception of a guy that kept screaming “we don’t want u here!” from the inside of his house when my little ones rang the doorbell, that guy was a jerk but it didn’t stop us from still having a good night Chat Icon.

I had 40 bags. First few kids came around 4:00 and last bags were taken from the table around 8:00. Was a combination of 1 or 2 kids with parents and larger groups

Halloween - how are you going to display your candy?

It was a sad Halloween this year. Maybe 10 kids. Normally the block would have been packed as people drove to the block in past years as a destination for trick or treating. Only 2 houses opened the doors. A few had bowls of candy set outside. I had taken my kids to East Wind in the day for trickor treating so they did get some candy at least. I found this year to be very depressing though...

Halloween - how are you going to display your candy?

My neighbors mostly had tables/bowls outside. Some were outside greeting TOTers and others were near their door inside giving them waves. It was a great night. My son was/is in candy heaven. It was the most efficient Halloween ever. We left a bowl outside. Kids seemed to be good about taking 1-2 pieces.

Halloween was awesome. I live by a town that loves Halloween and they did not disappoint this year. My child came back with a 16 pound bag (we weighed it). A variety of people opening doors, bowls outside, tables and inventive ways of distributing candy. Lots of kids and everyone wearing masks. Was nice to have some normalcy back.

Same here! The trick or treat tables made it so easy! No kids crowding themselves on steps, hoping a little one doesn’t fall down, no hoping the dog doesn’t escape or bark incessantly... just easy!!! And fun!
