Every day, this thread gets better and better! The new chicks look like little ducks to me.  I'm surprised Sunny tolerates Jack - she's not territorial at all?
I'm sorry Olivia is not feeling well.  You mentioned that she's at the bottom of the pecking order, does that make a difference in their life span? Would the babies automatically be at the bottom of the pecking order because of their age, possibly raising her status? Sorry for the questions, I'm fascinated. 
I hope Olivia feels better and that the two new chicks (names? names?  ) get acclimated just fine. 
Sunny doesn't view Jack as a threat in anyway, the big girls have known him since the day we got them & we taught them all to get along. She's not thrilled that he tries to get in the nursery with her but she deals with it.
Sometimes chickens at the bottom of the pecking order can get beat up & constantly stressed out and that can cause them to have a shorter life. As a general rule Olivia is a happy girl. She never gets beat up to the point of injury and she really knows where she fits in. The babies will be at the bottom-actually lower than the bottom sort of excluded until they mature. Then they will find their spots, since the big girls are aging its likely they will fall somewhere in the middle. As long as Daphne is around its really up to her. There is a possibility that Olivia will try to boss the babies around, but its really not her nature. Also Sunny might decide to allow the babies to move up since she's second from the top and not afraid of Daphne.

The three babies & Momma Sunny did very well together today. They were all so cute when I got home, the babies have totally bonded with Sunny.
I'm thinking Abigail and Francesca, but I'm not 100% untill I see their Chicken-alities

so today Cassandra is 5 days old & the little fluffballs are 3 days old.
We still didn't decide on names for them-any opinions?
Cassandra already has some feathers coming in on her wings!
The three babies are so cute together, they run around & play. Sunny taugh them how to scratch with their feet which is a big part of what chickens do in life. She makes the cutest sound for them when she finds something good to eat on the nursery floor, it calls them over. They are learning to preen themselves too.
The babies are just so in love with Sunny, they look to her all the time to make sure she's watching.
They sleep under her & go under when they are afraid, its funny that they wedge themslves under her wings or just right under her body. She lifts herself up like a garage door to let them in, them goes back down.
I tried to get some good pics tonight but Momma & babies were all tired & Everytime I'd take them out from under her they went right back.
Sunny is so sweet, she lets me reach right under her & take the babies, she lets me hold them which is awesome because the need to be checked everyday for "pasty butt" yes, that is an official name for something bad that happens to young chicks.
I'll try for better pics soon!

its Thursday morning & I think Olivia is feeling a bit better, she came running out of the coop this morning & she pulled snacks away from me while I was giving them out!
Good the good vibes going for her please

I was able to get some cute pics of Sunny and the babies today

So we had a little bit of excitement with Sunny & the chicks tonight. As that crazy storm started coming through we decided the green house that is under huge trees this time of year was not the best place for Sunny's nursery. So we brought the whole thing in the house. Luckily the storm passed and the greenhouse is ok. So we'll move them back out in the morning.

SO happy to read all the updates! The babies are just precious. I grew up with all sorts of animals like goats and chickens, bunnies, etc...and so wish I could do that for my DS. It's awsome that youhave this lil chicken family!

hello everyone, thank you for your continued interest in Sunny's family!
Things are going very well, Sunny is a wonderful mother she fits the ideal description of a mother hen in all of the books on chicken keeping I've read.
She is patient, kind, loving & sometimes a little strict with them. They all seem to love each other, although Cassandra is much larger than Farrah & BillieJean & the two little ones often stick together.
I have not seen any aggression with any of them, which is always a worry.
Sunny and the babies have been going out into the yard for a few minutes each day, she has taught them so many things already. I'm amazed.
Here she is with Cassandra in the nest
Here she is teaching them to take dustbaths, something that is very important in the life of a chicken

Momma watches them
She has also taught them how to catch flying bugs-
buh-bye mosquitos, scratch for bugs & small pebbles that they eat to grind up the food in their crop. She taught them to come to her when she calls them. She taught them the danger alarm & to look up when they think there is danger in the sky.
I enjoyed Sunny & her "sisters" so much when they were babies but seeing these babies grow up with Sunny as their Mommy has been so awesome.
And just for fun since the big girls have been out of the spotlight, a few new pics of them

My girl Olivia, she seems to have good days & bad days but overall she's ok
Marguerite( Sunny's "twin") getting ready to tear up my hosta-chickens & flowers cannot be left alone too long!
So that's all for now. I'll keep new pics coming!

Wow! Congratulations!! I haven't checked the Pets Board in a while, and I'm shocked that there are now 3 baby chickens!!!
My husband has his heart set on getting chickens next year.....I'm going to have to show him this thread!
