So far Sunny & her baby are getting to know each other & Sunny looks so proud. The baby keeps coming out from under Sunny looking to explore and Sunny gently tucks her back in if she goes too far. Sunny is just so cute with her, sometimes when baby pops out from under her Sunny almost seemed surprised again! its funny!
Both baby & Mommy ate some chick feed and had a little drink in the nest. We had to put a chicken wire covering on the front of Sunny's nest because Daphne was WAY too intrigued by the baby. Other adults have been known to kill babies. Olivia on the other hand stayed in the coop for hours again today just watching Sunny with her baby, she's a kind girl that I think is really just aware of what Sunny did.
Its 8:30pm on day 21 and I no longer hear any peeps except for the baby. All of the other eggs show no signs of pipping. I'm Sunny hatches even one more baby, it will be so much better for the baby to have someone to grow up with, but the chances are getting slim at this point. I'm going to give the other eggs until tomorrow to show a sign of life and then I'll move Sunny, the baby & the remaining eggs into the nursery, I'll leave the eggs till day 25 like last year.
Please keeping sending those super LIF good luck vibes for Sunny & her "babies"

We took a family vote, today was a rare day when my adult son & my teenage stepdaughter were both home with DH & I and actually interested in Sunny's baby-they are usually too cool for chicken stuff.
Anyway after a family vote we decided on Cassandra for the baby
Lets just hope she's really a girl!!!
Tomorrow I will get better pictures!

So its day 22 and Sunny & her baby are moved into the nursery. It was an adventure moving Sunny, the baby, the eggs and the nesting material all at one time. Sunny was totally confused and decided to run out of the nursery leaving baby Cassandra behind. I had to pick the baby up & keep her inside my shirt for warmth while Sunny ran around, started a big fight with Daphne and scratched the ground. After a few minutes of the baby going crazy calling Sunny I picked her up & put her back in the nursery with baby and thank god she remembered she has a job to do.

I also made a decision to take three of the eggs away from her. They have been unchanged & silent for days & the nursery nest was making it hard for her to manage the baby & the eggs.
We cracked them open and one as I suspected & had marked after candling was totally infertile. The other two had early signs of life but nothing that could have hatched.
She still has two eggs left & I'm desperatly trying to find someone with day or two old chicks. I'd like to get at least one more. I will update on that soon.

That's my oldest niece's name! If it turns out to be a boy, are you going to keep it? You could rename him Casanova.

I'm so glad they're doing well and I guess Sunny has some of her strength back if she's picking fights, huh?

another mini-update before I go to work.
Sunny is teaching the baby how to eat & drink, its SOOOO cute! She clucks a tune to the baby to tell it to do what she's doing!!
Its so sweet & it seems like the baby talks back to her with little peeps.
Jack the dog is totally obsessed with the baby, just like he was with Sunny & her sisters when they were chicks. He just sits there staring at Sunny & the baby watching every move they make and occaisionaly whimpers its funny.

Thanks for the updates and the pics, Kelly. Cassandra is so cute and Sunny looks so proud. I hope another one hatches or you at least find another chick for her.

I was able to get two more chicks from a woman in Commack!!!!

They are cochins which are chickens with feathered feet. They were not on the top of my list for breeds I'd like to have but they were looking for a good home & the timing was just right.
They are about 2 days old, so they are smaller than Cassandra which is good. We are waiting till about 10:00 to put them under Sunny, I'll take the eggs out from under her & slip these babies in with the broken shell from Cassandra.

The lady I got them from had an old fashioned technique to sex the chicks, she said its about 95% accurate and it said both of the new babies are girls!!!
That would be awesome.
Sunny is absolutely adorable with her baby, I hope she loves these little ones as much.

ETA-we think sweet Olivia might be having a problem. She is a "hybrid" they are not known to live long. She basically stayed in the coop since Cassandra hatched & even now that Sunny & baby are in the nursery in the greehouse Olivia still spends most of her day inside sleeping. She hasn't laid an egg in months & sometimes she doesn't seem interested in snacks. Olivia is the girl at the bottom of the pecking order and she likes people and dogs better than chickens, she was our first girl to lay an egg & she holds the record at our farm for laying the most eggs in row without taking a day off. Rich & I both really love her, as happy as I am to have these new babies a girl like Olivia can never be replaced.
So send some good vibes for Olivia's good health too

So far it looks like Sunny has accepted the new babies. It was pretty easy to slip them under her last night.
This morning she was already bonding with them & teaching them how to eat & drink. Cassandra looks so big compared to these little fuzzballs!


and here is Jack the Dog, he is the most excited about the new babies. He LOVED watching over Sunny and her sisters when they were babies, he so thrilled to have new babies. He's obessed with watching them!

I'm sorry Olivia is not feeling well. You mentioned that she's at the bottom of the pecking order, does that make a difference in their life span? Would the babies automatically be at the bottom of the pecking order because of their age, possibly raising her status? Sorry for the questions, I'm fascinated.

I hope Olivia feels better and that the two new chicks (names? names? ) get acclimated just fine.

I'm so glad you were able to get 2 more chicks for Sunny and that she's taking them as her own. They're all so adorable!! Love the pics and how sweet Jack is with them too!!
