The old adage states: “If Mohammed won’t go to the mountain, the mountain will go to Mohammed”. Well, know it seems that if you can’t get to Tinsel Town, Tinsel Town will come to you.

It seems Long Island, known for the star-studded Hamptons crowd is continuing to bring the stars to you, up close and personal, as Naomi Watts begins filing her latest movie right here on Shelter Island.

The film, “Funny Games” is a modern version of a nearly 10-year old flick about two “deranged” young men holding a family captive and “torturing” them in a lakeside cabin.

Watts, is cast as the leading lady, the middle-class housewife, Anna, who along with on-screen hubby, George and their on-screen sun are coerced into partaking in violent “games” created by the two youths.

The actress and the film crew made their way to Shelter Island back in September and since then have been filming in three locations across Long Island, including Head of the Harbor Village, Southampton and Shelter Island.

Officials note that the Islands ambiance including beaches, historic locations and mansions have been a strong draw to Hollywood crowds for almost a century and over the years, our “home” has become home to many a movie shoot and film crew, primarily due to the state’s tax incentives.

They, officials that is, go on to say, that this year Suffolk experienced a 10 to 20 percent increase in the total amount of days the Island served as a filming location as compared to last year. And, they add, the film industry has been great for the local economy.

In the current film, “Funny Games”, its noted that a house in Stony Brook was the main location with two other houses, one in Southampton and one on Shelter Island serving as neighboring cabins. And, all exterior locations were also filmed on Long Island according to the film manager.

And, officials assert that the filming of “Funny Games” helped generate nearly $4 million into the local economy.

Finally they add that in the past year at least a dozen feature films used Long Island as their shooting location. And, they expect several others to be shot locally, in Suffolk later this year. Among these: “American Gangster” featuring Denzel Washington and Russel Crow and “Grey Garden” featuring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange.
