Re: Jehovas Witnesses

I don't believe the poster was comparing the religion with Hitler rallies - rather, she was arguing that point that the children who are described as "enjoying and taking pride" in preaching may not actually be exercising free will - they are doing what they have been raised to do.

I recently showed portions of Triumph of the Will in my Literature and War class and the scenes of young children praising Hitler are very disturbing. I'm sure a lot of children in the film were too young to fully understand what they were supporting.

Are some of the children who are preaching as Jehova's Witnesses taking pride and enjoying themselves? sure. Are some of them doing it because they are being told to do it? sure. I went to sunday school because I had to - not because I wanted to. But were there children there who loved sunday school? yes.

I think the poster was taking issue with the suggestion that all children who are preaching testimony of Jehovah's witnesses are acting of their own accord.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

thank you....and yes this was the POINT i was trying to make

Re: Jehovas Witnesses

I had a good friend in high school who was the coolest girl, but she was a Jehovahs Witness (well, her family was) and they really came across as a bunch of psychos. She was not allowed to participate in ANYTHING and everyone just felt so bad for her all the time. I really felt that her childhood was often taken away from her b/c of her crazy mom. There is a difference between spreading the word and being crazy about it. Unfortunately they do have a stereotype as being a bit "off the wall".

Re: Jehovas Witnesses

I have had several students in my few years of teaching who are JWs. With that, I felt like I needed to learn more about the religion....it is interesting actually...

However,

Do I answer the door when they come? NO
Do I find it annoying? Yes, a bit
Do I think they are wrong for doing it? NO, it is their religion.
Have I felt bad for some of my students? Yes
I don't completely understand the religion yet, but I can't judge others for what they believe, just as I hope that noone judges for my religious beliefs, it's what makes where we are from such a wonderful and unique place, so yes, they can be a bit annoying when they come to your door-but it's very easy to simply not answer...

How often does it really happen anyway?

Jenn - I agree with some of what you last wrote...but this is very different from what you had previously written.

Also, just for clarification, the children I know that preach don't do it because they're taught it's "fun"...they actually love Jesus and enjoy spreading His Good News. It's not an easy concept for everyone to grasp, but it's true.

i am going to agree to disagree...

not saying what you believe isn't true

but i have my own thoughts and feelings on it..

I saw a show on good morning america about this Jesus Camp...

they showed these kids in the camp and they certainly did look like they were having fun..

Certainly scared the crap out of me just watching the show

omg you're probably referring to the new documentary that's out now - Jesus Camp. I saw it a few days ago - it follows some children as they prepare to attend a summer worship camp. The filmmakers had unprecented access to the camp director, the children, their parents, etc.

At one point the camp director brings in a cardboard cutout of President Bush and the children are on their knees worshiping him - reaching out to touch him and be healed by him.

The transformation the children go through is really astounding. The camp is really really really extreme, (the whole - gays go to hell, etc.) and so the documentary is one of the scariest things I've ever seen.

but do I knock on your door to tell you about my religion? there are other ways to get your message across.

No...beacuse its not YOUR belief to do so...thats why you dont, no other reason, not cause your nicer or less annoying, because YOU DONT believe in door to door spreading the word...THEY DO.

I find anyone who cannot have some sort of tolerance scary, this is what wars are about, relgious intolerence, and if you think thats harsh, your wrong.

Its the same compassion you would show to ANYONE...FOR ANYTHING.

YES, I dont answer my door to them, but I would never tell them they are WRONG for doing what they believe, as who the heck am I to judge them?

I know Im getting heated and am trying not to, but the intolerence here among some is sickening and sad to me.

i think that sometimes people hide behind their religion - that its OK to do something because its part of their religion.

if slaughtering animals in your basement is part of your religion - i do not think that is ok.

yes, wars are started by religions - i completely agree - but no one is saying that we are intolerant - its just annoying to have someone preach to us in OUR HOME.

Just say "Thank you, I'm not interested" and close the door. That's what my mom does. So, this way she doesn't have to be preached to.

The camp director - Becky Fisher (I might have her name wrong - I dont totally remember it) and ALL of the children in the documentary were interviewed saying they were happy with how they were portrayed in the documentary. Becky Fisher even said she wanted to use the documentary as an evangelical tool. The children come off as mostly sweet in the film - I belive their energy comes from their love of God and Jesus - but I'd also say that they get so caught up in the fervor too - it's beyond their control - and the interweaving of politics and religion - the jump from preaching to gay bashing is so quick it's truly frightening.

I'd recommend seeing it though - really eye opening.

Can I ask a question to everyone that says they just don't open the door to them?

Do you just never open the door to anyone other than people you know or do you have some kind of sixth sense that they are JW and wanting to talk to you?

I think it you look at it as they are trying to save your soul ----and truly believe that they can if you listen to them -- it may feel a little differently.

My father used to cut them off & say "How much for the pamphlet? I'll give you a $1, read it & then call if I'm interested." Our door was closed in less than 5 seconds.

Later I found him reading it. I asked why he was wasting his time. He answered, "You never know what you might learn. They may be wasting my time but at least I'll find out why they knock on our door."

They do not believe in celebrations... so they cannot celebrate anything, birthdays, holidays, anything. When there is a celebration, children either leave the classroom, or don't come in that day.

i really haven't seen that many threads about JW
And i am sure if there were there have been things that were said that are not true...
Not everyone knows about the religion..

BUT i really didn't see anyone saying that they are BANGING on door..
Nor did i see anyone say that they are being forced to practice their religion.

I work with a few people who are JW. And there are a few of things that the religion doesn't condone...ie celebrating birthdays..something most children of all faiths do...

It is the nature of the religion...

And i don't see people who get annoyed with the people knocking at their doors preaching another religion at them as INTOLERANT. JTHEY ARE UST NOT INTERESTED...

You can be tolerant of other religions and not want it at your front door.

And to the people, as myself who just do not answer the door, are also not any more or less intolerant because we do not want to hear the little speech about JW.

I understand this is part of their religion..

I do not understand preaching to an audience that does not want to hear it...but so be it.

There is a lot about religions that i do not understand..

again ...doesn't make me intolerant just not informed

I usually do not answer to anyone..I am a very tolerant person and I enjoy learning about other religions and cultures as well, but not while I am trying to cook/enertain/relax/clean etc...at home.

-on a sidenote-one of my students parents gave me a booklet (and one for my DH) when we were getting married-at first, I was thinking...she knows I am a Catholic, why is she giving me this, but I took it graciously and one night I sat down to read a little-it didn't hurt me any to learn a little more-Chat Icon

EXACTLY - I am tolerant of people practicing their religion - but not when it's on my doorstep, unwelcome. Or while I'm on a date - as it happened once at a park... we were on swings just hanging out when a man came up to us preaching about God, etc. I was a teenager and didn't have the guts to just tell him to leave, so I just sat there and listened to it and got increasingly annoyed, until we finally up and walked away.

Heres the thing, and I guess to clarify what I was saying...cause I was calling many intolerant.

Its the attitude of MAKE THEM STOP...MAKE them go away thats intolerant. WHY are they doing this on my Door Step. I dont do it on theirs....

I DO NOT answer my door to the JW's. Am I different then some of those on this thread tolerence wise...SURE AM....

because I KNOW that this is their relgion. I know because I educated myself enough to know or even by reading this thread, can now understand WHY they do it....and as a tolerant huuman, I understand their reasons, I respect their beliefs....

so would I berate them, call them names and say they are soliceting at my doorstep?

NO...because thats ignorant...

so theres a BIG difference between being not interested ( which I am not in what the JW's have to offer me) and being intolerant
