Re: Spinoff: Talking on the LIRR

As an early AM commuter, I agree with the woman's point, not her delivery.
I've turned around and asked people to take it down a notch. But they've been on cell phones and practically yelling.
If you are sitting in a car with "train friends" that's a whole other story. But they know the rules and will usually sit ina car where other train friend groups congregate.

It ****** me off, because she or anyone else could have asked nicely, not for her to be nasty and for them to clap and embarass someone. We had had a really long day at work too!

My husband and i talk on the train - as i stated in an earlier post, it is perfectly fine to have a hushed conversation that wont be obtrusive to anyone. We are constantly keeping eachother in check if we hear the others voice rising so that we know we arent disturbing anyone. It's not about being silent, its about respecting others around you.

I agree her delivery was all wrong and there is no need to embarass anyone. Especially since they probably knew you were not aware of your volume.

me and my friend ca both be loud, but I didn't think we were really being overly loud. I think part of it was we were inadventently loud, and the other part was we were in a car full of people who wanted to sleep

My train line is pretty quiet in the morning. In the evening, there's a lot of people chatting with each other and on the phone. It's at a level where it doesn't disturb others though.

I've only seen one instance in the 10 months I've been commuting by LIRR where a woman went off on a person wearing headphones. His music was so loud that everyone in the car could hear it. They got into a nice argument back and forth for 5 minutes. She could've asked him to turn it down more nicely than she did... same with the woman you encountered.

I agree with you her delivery was a little irrational and people clapping totally sux.
On a personal note...I have to say..if someone told me to shut up nice or nasty...I would be hurt regardless.....its just how I am.

Re: Spinoff: Talking on the LIRR

I don't get nasty but I'm that commuter who'll tell you to lower your voice or that your i-pod music is louder than my own during a rush hour train.

As a commuter, I don't expect total silence, but if the car is generally quiet and the everyone can hear your converstation - then someone's going to tell you to lower your voice (though there's no reason to be mean about it).

Of course, off peak trains are totally different. Anything seems to go on those trains when everyone else around you is on the phone/talking/drinking, you can't ask everyone around you to be quiet. Chat Icon

Or leave the car , b/c your kids are screaming! Chat Icon

Jen, I think the general rule is to go witht eh general mood on the car.

I don't mind loud cars, but 1 one conversation stands out, it drives me nuts. I think that is more common at odd time , like 11pm or 2 in the afternoon.

As a commuter I will tell you this - many people have to spend a very long long time on the train commuting to work. Sometimes you NEED that time to just read, reflect, sleep etc. If someone is talking very loudly, you cant do that. In general, people try to be courteous by keeping their voices down.

As a frequent rider I can tell you that it is possible to have a quiet conversation without bothering your fellow riders. But if you thought that you had to speak over the rumbling of the train, you were probably talking extremely loud, thereby disrupting everyone on the train.

I have to say I agree. Even on the new trains with all their bumps & noises, it is entirely possible to have a conversation without bothering others.

I feel that many people do not realize that the daily commuters use that time to wind down. It is critical sometimes for our sanity.

Re: Spinoff: Talking on the LIRR

It's hard to be spoken to that way in front of people but please don't let it get to you too much. What's done is done and chances of you seeing her again are slim.

As a LIRR commuter I have to say that there are unwritten rules and procedures that most of us follow. I know that both coming in and going out of Penn Station, I try my best to unwind and sleep a little. Loud conversations are very disrupting but for the most part I don't think that too many people have bad intentions or are that rude. It just happens once in a while. Like others have said, the women probably could should have come across in a different way but chances are there was a lot more to her reaction.

The more you get to know the people on your train, I find, the more forgiving they are if you don't abuse it. The other night I had to make a call on my way home and made sure to have DH tell me when I was getting too loud. People saw that we were trying to be quiet - plus I kept it short. So no comments.

Don't let what happened bother you too much - you are not the first and definitely not the last to have that happen. Chat Icon
