Moving for a job. How important is location to you?

For those that moved for a job, or have in the past, how important is it where you work?

So I have decided on the area I want to move to, or so I thought. I still have the job, so that isn’t a problem. Well I still have to sign the contract, but that takes a while.

Today they called me on what I assumed was my choice and I told her where. Even though it’s a small village, I don’t have to live there as it is close enough to a major city (Leipzig). She said OK, but let me tell you about this other place by Berlin. She then explained the differences, etc. The big difference is that she said there is more room for advancement at the place by Berlin and that means a higher salary, whereas the place I am more interested in stays the same. She said that she can eventually see me working for the main part eventually.

I’m now conflicted. I really, really liked the place I visited. The people were nice and the environment was great. It also seemed a little big easier, but I could be wrong. I thought maybe it was me, but I think they just need someone in the Berlin location. She also said I can start in Leipzig and then after 3-4 years go to Berlin, but she wasn’t sure if I wanted to move again.

Pros:
Leipzig
-cheaper rent
-loved the people
-only teach about 40 weeks a year and that’s 7-12 Monday-Friday. Vacation time is the same at both places- 6 weeks. This place seems to have some extra breaks according to one of the employees I talked to.
-it seems easier
-new city to learn
-about 15-20 other teachers, so a nice amount.
-already visited the workplace, so I know what it is like.
-up and coming area

Berlin
-I love Berlin and have been there quite a bit.
-more room for advancement and chance for more money

Cons:
Leipzig
-city is known for its extreme right-wingers
-you need a car
-no room for advancement

Berlin
-rent is higher; I don’t even think I would live in Berlin because of this. I really want to save money and catch up because my divorce strained me financially
-it seems pretty isolated
-small workplace— 5 people
-haven’t visited it and no chance to before I make my decision.
-they were both parts of Eastern Germany, so there is the unsightly communist buildings still around. But I think it is worse by Berlin because it was bombed a lot more than Leipzig.

For me...Berlin and the chance for advancement. If you are moving into a field/area that you love - it makes sense to go towards the path that will give you the most choice.

Since you have no ties to either place - I would choose Berlin as there is more room for advancement and more money.

I just want to clarify that the Berlin location is not in Berlin. It’s about 1 1/2 hours from the center of Berlin. Berlin is HUGE.

I would not be able to live in Berlin because it wouldn’t make sense money wise and time wise. In fact, I can’t find any information about this small village. Being that isolated scares me.

The money difference is 350 more per month (net) at the end of the day. I don’t know what the salary would be going to the main office/ministry. The starting salary is the same at both locations. It’s just that I can’t go beyond a certain point in Leipzig. Getting to that point could takes on average about 5 years.

It’s also possible to go to Leipzig and move to Berlin after 3-4 years. That way I can save some money. The saving factor is very important to me.

I would start in Leipzig, and move after 4 years, assuming you’re absolutely sure this will really be an option.

Quality of life is very important to me, more than career advancement.

I’d also be concerned that you haven’t met the coworkers in Berlin, and small offices (5 ppl) can have a strange dynamic. You already don’t really want to go to Berlin, and if you get there and hate the people you will be miserable.

I guess I'm in the monority -- everything you said about Lepzig sounded positive in terms of life --- and for me, while I was at my last job for more than 9 years (started a new one recently) a job is a job and there will be opportunity for advancement somwhere down the road either there, or somewhere else -- and I'd rather be happy. Doesnt sound like the money difference is huge (and you may spend more on rent)--- I'd rather enjoy the now (I'm also a cancer survivor so my viewpoint has shifted a bit over time)

i vote for Lepzig.

the reason being: how you write about it. at this moment, you sound a lot like me... looking for confirmation of what you already know you want.

if the possibility to move is really there in about 3 years and you're likely to reach the pay max in 5 years... and your heart is in Lepzig... i say go for it.

Agreed! I think you know you want to go to Lepzeig but just want confirmation that you aren't making a dumb decision. Based solely on what you wrote, I would say go to Lepzeig. Quality of life sounds better and it also sounds like you will have more of an opportunity to socialize which is important. I think anyway. She said you would have the opportunity to move to Berlin down the road so if you feel unfulfilled, at least you have the option.

This is pretty much it. I want to go to Leipzig, but it seems like the person was trying to sell me on Berlin. That’s what’s throwing me off. I started feeling a little paranoid that maybe they didn’t like me there. I think it’s probably because they are having a hard time filling that vacancy. Probably because it is isolated. Or maybe they found someone who can only take the Leipzig position? But why should I give up my happiness?

I also am not sure I am made for advancement. I suffer from imposter syndrome, lol. This also makes me fear if I don’t say yes to Berlin that they may reconsider hiring me, and that scares me. She assured me that was not true.

I spent the whole afternoon researching and looking for apartments in this village and I didn’t come up with much, and it was more expensive. I googled about the area and nothing special comes up.

I wouldn't overthink it.

Possibly they are wanting you to go to Berlin as the need is greater there - but there may be a reason why that position is open and they are dire to fill it. Go with your gut.

It also seems like you can move up if you go to Leipzig and maybe Ben could still be on the table in a few years.
