Not being in the situation it's hard to say at what age I would feel comfortable. I think the situation and decision would depend a lot on where the individual is at with themselves. For some, it's a lifetime journey to figure themselves out, for some they've known since the day they could speak and for others it's a process somewhere in between.
All I can say with complete surety is that I would ALWAYS support my children NO MATTER WHAT. I would do everything in my power to ensure their happiness with themselves and in their lives. No question.
The problem is that when they are young you can't be sure if it will turn out to be something that they've known for life, or if they are still on a lifelong journey, or somewhere in between. So you've got to use your judgement to determine if and when you will let them transition as a minor.
I completely agree with you. It's definitely not a decision to be taken lightly and truthfully, I can't even imagine being in the position to have to make that choice with your child. It's a lot to consider.

I think that it is a difficult position to be in, if your child insists that they are the opposite gender. I think that I would try to encourage them to present themselves however they feel comfortable as far as clothing, hair, etc. But I don't think I would allow them to change their name or allow them to use the opposite sex bathroom until after puberty. I do know that in a lot of districts if, for example, a boy requests that a teacher use female pronouns and call them by a different name, the teacher will do so without reporting it to the parents.

Those that are transgender benefit greatly from beginning the transformation prior to puberty. It is never taken lightly by those in the medical profession and they do see many of doctors.
Their frontal lobes are not fully developed. No way would I consent to surgery/hormones before 18.
The hormone therapy is typically to suppress the puberty development of gender specific things such as breasts. A born female identifying as a boy having to deal with menstruation? That can be excruciating. I dont think any of us can understand the mental and emotional damage that is done to individuals/ teens going through this. Add to it that none of this is done without intensive medical support and intervention. A teen doesn’t wake up one day and decide to switch genders. It’s a lengthy process to get to the point of medical therapy involving hormones. Unless you are really seeing it first hand/ you can’t understand how detrimental not addressing it can be

Hard to say, I get that puberty in the wrong gender must be awful but think about those that start hormones and surgery early then decide to de transition? I wonder how strict doctors are about having young people transition? I know they were super strict a while ago not sure if that is still the case.

Not till 18 at the youngest. They need to be fully aware of what they are about to do and make that decision at least with a full understanding.

It must be absolute hell for anyone to feel trapped in their own body. I cannot even imagine the emotional toll that must take on them.
IMO, age doesn't matter, it's the individual circumstances that do. It's impossible for anyone to comprehend these choices/decisions unless they've gone through it with their own child. As a parent, I'm sure that's not easy road to travel with your child.

Much agreed. I do believe with the aide of counseling and therapy, there are situations where the family and child can be pretty certain of their gender transition. I would also be very worried for the child going through puberty in the “wrong body” and the risk depression and suicide. Ultimately, all cases are different and have to be looked at individually. We all just want our kids alive and happy.

Personally, I'd let them dress however they choose at any age. However, I'd probably wait until they are 18 when they can decide on any medical procedures and make and informed decision. I've seen stories where kids transition as kids but then regret it. You just never know...

My friend’s child is going through this now. We had a few hours long discussions about it. What I said to my friend is that I would do a hair cut, clothing, binder, but no life altering surgery or testosterone until at least 17. The kid is 14. It seems that there is a huge fad in this school district to change names and over 1/2 of the middle school kids have requested name changes at this point. Which statistically is well beyond what would normally be expected for a student population to have that many trans kids. So the child is going by a new name and new pronouns.

. Please tell the mom to read Abigail Shirer’s book , Irreversible Damage. It might give her more insight and prove helpful.
