Daycare sickness- what is normal?

So my son goes to a local daycare center and he started there in October (he's almost 9 months old now). Ever since he started I feel like he is always catching something, and then having to stay home for a while when he first started he got RSV, had to be out for nearly 2 weeks, then stomach virus, respiratory viruses, covid, ear infection... latest one was another stomach virus. I feel like I am paying for him to stay home and having to make arrangements for work. I have a school age daughter who attended a home daycare when she was a baby (which since closed) and she was sick at times, but not like this... just wanted to know if anyone else experienced this much sickness when sending your child to daycare?

Re: Daycare sickness- what is normal?

When you first send them, yes it's normal to be sick a lot.
Of course how much really depends on the individual kid their immune system and really just luck of the draw

But i can say, once you get through that first year of daycare, they will have super charged immunity.
My DD never missed more than a day or 2 a year- some years none at all- for being sick once she hit Pre K.

She even slowed down a LOT on illness after the first year or so of daycare

This exactly. I know that doesn’t help you now, OP, but it’s true. I know how hard it is to arrange childcare so I feel your pain. It’s miserable.

My older son was sick a ton his first year of daycare - stomach viruses, ear infections, fever viruses, and chicken pox... Then it slowed dramatically.

My younger son wasn't as sick his first year - his spread out more over the years (but possibly because he was sick before he even went to daycare thanks to big brother).

Yep and my kids are older and they were both sick that first year. Between that and all their days off from daycare and school, ALL my days were taken for them until they were in middle school.

Yes it’s normal.

Both my kids within the first week of going to daycare got the stomach virus.

Then they had on and off sicknesses but like other says by the time they get to elementary school they’re not out as much.

But of course every child is different

Re: Daycare sickness- what is normal?

No kids here but a woman I work with sent her daughter to daycare starting last summer. Her kid has had everything you said. She had covid and RSV at the same time (scary) she has been coughing non stop too. She legit has fever and something else every other week.
So it sounds pretty normal unfortunately.

Daycare sickness- what is normal?

I feel like my son had a runny nose from September-May when he attended daycare. He was sick and had to stay home a handful of times. My husband and I would trade off days.

I think like other posters have said it’s to be expected - but it might be worth a conversation with the director to go over their protocols, cleaning, return to school rules, etc. my friends daughter was hospitalized in Dec for a virus after having everything under the sun in the weeks prior - she talked with the daycare about it to make sure all their protocols were being enforced. Hang in there !

Yup. My daughter had colds, a stomach virus or two, and coxsackie TWICE the first year in daycare. Now she barely gets sick. It was REALLY hard with work. I blew through all my vacation/sick time and my boss at the time was not a mom so she was not understanding in the least. It's better now though- she's in Kindergarten and she hasn't gotten sick at all. Of course they're all wearing masks so who knows once that all ends.
