In other news, anyone see the new cheesecloth masks out now? Yep you heard right. I just saw someone wear one to the library today and gave them a thumbs up. Seriously thinking of getting one for my kid if this is the new rule. They said masks but they didnt say what kind lol
I once searched breathable masks on Amazon and mesh ones came up...same concept
I saw the cheesecloth ones since last year! Get them in black. The darker the color, the better.

Those of you with cheesecloth masks may be SOL. Both my district and DD’s camp specify “double layer masks.” And yes, I 100% believe they would notice and give the kid a surgical mask.

after a certain amount of time if your child is not in school they will not advance to the next grade no matter how well they do on tests. There is no way I would stand for this. They will not be able to learn if there is no virtual class. This sounds like a complete and total disaster in the making.
Children can still advance even with excessive absences. Excessive absences can lead to a pre-pins meeting due to educational neglect. If the absences are due to a covid exposure, admin should not flag it for such a meeting.
Schools honestly have no idea what they are doing. Directive really should come from the state. Virtual learning was a shitshow last year and many students took advantage of the system at least at the secondary level.
On one of our local FB pages there was a mom who was mad her daughter couldn’t walk at middle school graduation because she has 100 absences during remote learning (the district she is in did a poor job monitoring students). She was supposed to go to summer school so she could advance.

Now do we have to go out and buy masks again?
I know no one can answer this, but I was really hoping to make due with the ones we had. Also, in the beginning of summer, masks were dirt cheap! It's like the stores couldn't give them away!
Now I feel like I have to look for deals to get new ones for my kids...if they need them.

Dd also said at the end of the year they were all pulling them down half the day too and the teacher didn't say a word.

Our district specifically prohibited gaiters and single layer masks last year so I assume the rule about them will be the same for this year. I’m not sure what happened if kids wore those since I always sent mine with in with double layer masks. If they forgot a mask, the school provided a disposable one.
I’m curious to see whether masks are going to be required at any time for outdoor sports again. I assume at the very least they’ll be required for indoor sports for unvaccinated kids.

I’ve had students who have been absent well over 50% of the year and advanced. Attendance mandates do not hold up especially at the elementary and middle school level. The only reason kids don’t get socially promoted at the HS level is because of Needing credit for graduation purposes.
Also - everyone passes MS summer school. I teach 9th grade and have only ever heard of one kid retained in 15+ years.

Our school also required double layer masks. If you didn’t have one, they’d give you a disposable one.

Same. They were doing temp checks and all that and my March it stopped and mask wearing was casual. I was surprised because the community I live in consists of a lot of scaredy cats but by the end of
The school year it was non existent.

They will not be social distancing in the classroom in most cases due to space limitations. I am fine with the indoor masking since there is not going to be a remote option if a child gets quarantined- it will count as an absence.
They’re gonna count quarantines as absences? Wow! Do quarantines still last 15 days? Would that apply only to a symptomatic person or exposures too?
Last I checked quarantine was 10 days. It applies to exposure to a confirmed positive case.

If the exposure effects the entire class
then they would go to remote learning but if the exposure only effects some students or the quarantine is a result of an activity outside of school then it is an absence. It is not held against the kid as an unexcused absence but the child cannot go to school. It is the same for any other illness. The teachers cannot keep up the hybrid model it was too much.

My kids needed triple layer masks for school last year. In camp they still arent required to wear them. I really don't get this anymore...

Exactly and in other states it is optional. FL is fighting and other states have already adopted that rule.

Oh wait- so you are asking- what if the parent wants the kid masked ,but the kid takes it off in school against the parent's wishes?
OK I didn't realize that was what you meant.
I would imagine it would be something you fill out prior to school- check off if you want your child masked.
And then yes, the teacher would have to police.

I think most kids who have parents who want them to wear masks will keep them on. It’s the expectation that has been set.

There are about 180 days of school. If her daughter missed 100 of them, that's more than half of the year. It seems to me that has nothing to do with the school and is on the parent.
