Re: WHO now says asymptomatic spread is rare!

I think the other important thing to know is how long before you show symptoms can you pass it to others.
If I get sick today, was I spreading it yesterday? All last week?
That's a big one too

what I get from this is that even if you have it if you are not showing symptoms the chances of you being able to spread it is rare. Which to me means that as long as you werent out sick you are not spreading it.

could be completely wrong though Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: WHO now says asymptomatic spread is rare!

See I take it as...there are certain people who can have this virus and show zero symptoms. They only find out if they get a test for some reason. They never get sick though.
Those are the people that they are now saying are rare to catch it from.

Then there are people who do show symptoms and get sick. You can catch it easier from them when they are showing their symptoms, obviously. But what about the few days before those symptomatic people show symptoms- when the virus is incubating.

But I could be wrong as well....

WHO now says asymptomatic spread is rare!

I think if no spike comes from these protests, we can take this as truth.

There's a difference between asymptomatic (people who have it but aren't shedding) and people who are shedding but are pre-symptomatic.

Re: WHO now says asymptomatic spread is rare!

The whole point of these fuking masks was the asymptomatic people who could be spreading it without knowing it. So everyone had to wear one.

Will this mask thing disappear now? My acne, dry throat and nose will be thankful

Careful. If you say you don't like masks on these threads you are labeled a bully and an unhappy person to boot.

I think masks still help. We are on day 12 of protests, and so far, so spike. My guess is this is because almost all protesters are wearing masks. I hate them, but I will wear one if it means we can get through these phases and get back to some type of normal.

I wear them. But I don’t have to like them!! Lol

But for real though... that was the reason for all people to wear them. Soooooo if asymptomatic people aren’t spreading it, then why wear one unless you feel ill

Re: WHO now says asymptomatic spread is rare!

This is from the same organization that first cane out with the “we don’t believe there is a risk of human to human transmission”. Yeah no. They have mishandled this crisis from the start, contradicting their own earlier advice, and being way to cozy w China and giving them a platform to run this show. Along w the CDC I no longer follow what they say or believe it.

China (Wuhan) tested all 10 million residents and revealed as many as 300 positive cases were from people who were asymptomatic. There haven’t been any definite studies on exactly how many asymptomatics are actually contagious. Positive cases doesn’t necessarily mean they all have the equal ability to infect others. The fact that we have positive cases from football players who were clearly infected from protesting or just going about their daily lives and weren’t outwardly sick tells me the virus continues to spread silently. In NY we had 701 positive cases today, yes it’s a great low number but tomorrow there will likely be at least 500 new cases and I bet a few of these people will get results and say “I wasn’t even feeling sick.” Many don’t even develop symptoms.

Were it not for testing, they would not know how important it is to self isolate. Hence why this is spreading.

Asymptomatic transmission IS happening and politicians/legislators are eager to get Americans back to work and the economy moving forward quickly which is why you see more mass media articles downplaying transmission data and focusing on the “well what we thought was common is now really rare” sound bites coming from the CDC/WHO.. it’s right up there with the CDC stating surface contact isn’t a major way this virus transmits when we already knew that but public health experts use that to emphasize that going crazy about disinfecting surfaces is likely overkill. It’s all BS to me IMHO. Covid is not magically going to go away until every single country in the world can report 0 positive cases for 2/3/4/5+ months straight. We have a long way to go before that happens if we follow herd immunity theories.

Until a vaccine comes out or the virus dies out, I am not going back to many of my old pre Covid routines!

At first I thought the same thing as you (and I really really wanted to believe this, so we didnt have to wear masks and things could open ha), but I do believe the article posted is misleading. I read a few others that go into more detail and call out the difference between asymptomatic vs pre-symptomatic.

https://www.axios.com/who-coronavirus-asymptomatic-patients-08d84e31-1846-44d8-8fe1-2343ff850764.html

Between the lines: Don't treat these statements as a permission to treat a lack of symptoms as a "get out of social distancing" free card.

Infected people can be contagious well before experiencing symptoms.
"Some modeling studies suggest 40-60% of spread is from people when they didn’t have symptoms," tweeted Ashish Jha, incoming dean at the Brown School of Public Health.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/08/health/coronavirus-asymptomatic-spread-who-bn/index.html

Van Kerkhove also said that what appear to be asymptomatic cases of Covid-19 often turn out to be cases of mild disease.
"When we actually go back and we say how many of them were truly asymptomatic, we find out that many have really mild disease," Van Kerkhove said.
"They're not quote-unquote Covid symptoms, meaning they may not have developed fever yet, they may not have had a significant cough, or they may not have shortness of breath -- but some may have mild disease," she said. "Having said that, we do know that there can be people who are truly asymptomatic."
Many people with Covid-19 who may appear to be asymptomatic actually could just have mild or atypical symptoms -- or they could be pre-symptomatic, Dr. Manisha Juthani, an infectious diseases specialist and associate professor of medicine and epidemiology at Yale School of Medicine, said in an email to CNN on Monday.
Pre-symptomatic refers to the early stages of an illness, before symptoms have developed, whereas asymptomatic may refer to having no symptoms throughout the course of an infection -- a distinction that Van Kerkhove hinted at during Monday's media briefing.

I believe it’s during the 2 weeks incubation period. Unless they’re referring to something else.

From what I understand, there is a difference between A-symptomatic and PRE-symptomatic. Some people will never get symptoms and the risk of transmission from them is very low. But those who are pre-symptomatic can spread it easily. Problem is, there’s pretty much no way to tell the difference and no way for anyone that know if they are either one.

Re: WHO now says asymptomatic spread is rare!

They're taking back that statement about asymptomatic virus spreading.

https://www.statnews.com/2020/06/09/who-comments-asymptomatic-spread-covid-19/

Atop World Health Organization official clarified on Tuesday that scientists have not determined yet how frequently people with asymptomatic cases of Covid-19 pass the disease on to others, a day after suggesting that such spread is “very rare.”

The clarification comes after the WHO’s original comments incited strong pushback from outside public health experts, who suggested the agency had erred, or at least miscommunicated, when it said people who didn’t show symptoms were unlikely to spread the virus.

Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO’s technical lead on the Covid-19 pandemic, made it very clear Tuesday that the actual rates of asymptomatic transmission aren’t yet known.
...

“The WHO created confusion yesterday when it reported that asymptomatic patients rarely spread the disease,” an email from the Harvard Global Health Institute said Tuesday. “All of the best evidence suggests that people without symptoms can and do readily spread SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19. In fact, some evidence suggests that people may be most infectious in the days before they become symptomatic — that is, in the presymptomatic phase when they feel well, have no symptoms, but may be shedding substantial amounts of virus.”
