Re: COVID opinion: Am I being overprotective?

Absolutely not

If they ask, you tell them you are taking social distancing very seriously. So being in school hanging out or being Home playing hanging out is kind of the same thing. Hurt feelings mean nothing when it comes to the health and well being of your family.

With my husband (trying to) recuperate from surgery during all of this, there are zero visitors unless absolutely necessary in my house. His parents, brother, anyone. Goes for my family and our friends as well. I know they probably think I’m going overboard and I don’t give a shit. He comes first. I’ll take the hit. I’ll be the crazy one, mean person, or whatever/however they feel.

You know what is best for you and your peace of mind as well

COVID opinion: Am I being overprotective?

I am taking social distancing VERY seriously so no. I don’t even want my DS playing with our neighbor and he and his parents are going to be home for the foreseeable future since they’re both teachers and their schools closed.

COVID opinion: Am I being overprotective?

Yes, I would. Nurses are protecting themselves way better than any rando. I’d be less concerned about a nurse than someone who uses public transportation or has been in a plane.

ETA I just realized you didn’t say nurse but it doesn’t matter. All hospital personnel in direct contact are well protected and educated.

And you don’t have to announce it, you can just tell them no school means no play dates either if they ask.

COVID opinion: Am I being overprotective?

No I would not- we are closing schools so families can implement social distancing. I work for a hospital based research center and we were all told this morning to work from home next week unless it is absolutely essential to go in

No, but they could do on line virtual play dates.

I’m not sure about here yet, but a lot of healthcare workers in other countries are contracting the disease despite preventative measures.

So to the OP, no, I would absolutely not let them.

Re: COVID opinion: Am I being overprotective?

No. Even if I could be 100% sure these people weren't infected the point of closing schools and social distancing is for everybody to stay home, not so kids can have a school break and continue business as usual to have play dates and trekking to the mall and bounce places, and the movies, etc. If kids are still socializing outside their immediate family then might as well keep the schools open. What's the point then? I would hope someone working in the medical field would understand.

Now that schools are closed there are thousands of healthcare workers who have no one to care for their children while they make sure your family members don’t die.

Given these attitudes toward their kids it seems like they’ll have to choose their children.

Curious to see how that will work out for everyone.

Yep
"Social distancing " isnt always feasible for everyone as much as a buzzword as it has become.

For what it's worth though not everyone feels this way. I already told my friend I'd watch her kid if need be because she has no choice but to work.

Re: COVID opinion: Am I being overprotective?

The OP sounded like a play date. It didn't sound like a child care situation.

Yes, but if people are afraid of the children of healthcare workers how are they supposed to find anyone to care for their children while they work?

Exactly.., I offered my friend who is a nurse to watch her dog while she’s working long shifts and help with her elderly parents, if she had kids I would watch them too or have “play dates”.

COVID opinion: Am I being overprotective?

Honestly, if someone needs help with child care, that's one thing. I would help if I could. Play dates are another story. I am taking social distancing seriously. There's no point in closing the schools if people are just going to get together anyway. My son and I both have asthma and I have a host of autoimmune issues. We aren't taking any chances and he will not be having any play dates. Do what you think is best for your family, you know better than anyone else.

Re: COVID opinion: Am I being overprotective?

My sister in-law is an ER nurse who has direct contact with potential Covid patients. They’re exercising extreme caution and are protecting themselves. I still go to their house and have made myself available to watch my nephew and nieces. I’ll continue to go there a few times a week to hang out with the kids.

Re: COVID opinion: Am I being overprotective?

I don’t think you are being overprotective. We are supposed to socially distance, so no play dates, etc. I am not seeing my in-laws since my father in law is a commercial pilot and I believe that puts him at a higher risk of exposure. I want to do my part to protect those around me who cannot fight this as well as I hopefully would be able to.

Re: COVID opinion: Am I being overprotective?

NO! My brother works at the hospital and he said he is staying away from everyone till things settle down. He sees first hand what this virus is doing and knows some nurses who got it from treating patience. Better to be safe.

First off... they shouldn't even be having play dates to begin with. My kids have been outside with the other kids, but I said far distance and they've been on their bikes riding.

We are very unprepared for this
People are going to their primary docs and no one has protection and are exposing anyone and everyone
Honestly the hospital worker is probably safer as they have atleast personal protection ( hopefully) and less chance of spreading it
Please do not discriminate. It's one thing if you are doing it to everyone but to do it just because someone works in hospital is not helpful
I work and I have a special needs child. Can you imagine my stress both at job and at home with the child
I have no friends and I don't go anywhere so it's moot point
But try to be kind and understanding
You can do what you want of course
My 2 cents

I'm not sure how I feel- everyone has different comfort levels. You need to do what feels right for you. My husband works in a hospital and I am home with DD. I have a feeling the neighborhood kids will be avoiding my DD- but I understand. My friend is pregnant and won't come to my house, even when DH isn't here- I totally understand. In fact, I wish my husband didn't have to come home everyday and risk exposing us- although he's taking the proper precautions and is not patient facing.

You shouldn't be planning play dates with ANY other children. That's the whole point of closing schools and so many other institutions. The sooner everyone gets on board with "social distancing" or self-isolation or whatever you want to call it, the sooner this thing will die down and we'll be able to get back to normal. I realize it is no fun to be stuck at home, but that is why this is being done. We all need to sacrifice so that we can get through this as safely and quickly as possible.

Help with childcare is a different story. I do believe we should keep our distance from as many people as possible - but medical personnel, first responders etc still have to go to work and will need help with child care from those who can offer it
