Do you have a pool?
yes we recently pt in an inground and we LOVE it!! so happy we did it. Just not having to rely on other people to invite us over when we just want to sit and relax and kids want to swim makes it worth the money.
We also have a heater and have been using the pool since early May. Even on some days that was nice out but not hot we were able to go in the pool!

In your situation, I would save my $$$$ for lawyer fees. I wouldn’t do anything extreme at this point. Upstate doesn’t really need pools, just sayin’ . Save, save, save. Get yourself set up in a proper place. Feed your kids and work on the paperwork. I have been doing that and it has worked really great. I have a nice savings account. I was very frugal and it has paid off. Just do the basics for a few months.
Oh I'm talking more like 5 year plan.

It's a lot of work. And a lot of money.
And we can only use it like 2 months of the year.
ours has been open since Memorial Day and I've yet to go in. The weather just sucks here. And when it does gets nice the pool is still freezing so we had to get a heater. Which is more maintenance and more money.
If I live in Florida it would be well worth it.
In NY, it's nice to have but probably not worth the costs
Can I ask what the lot of work and money is? We are thinking of getting a semi inground one. We have a cabana now and my kids (and I) are just not into it anymore. We've done it for many years and all agree would rather have a pool. Just trying to weigh things for now.

No, we have a weird yard layout and we don’t have the space. My parents do, so we mooch off of them.

I’ll try to answer this based on my upbringing (we had an above ground pool), and that was my job as a kid to take care of the pool (I know that would never happen these days) .
You have to pay for chlorine and other chemicals to keep it clean. You have to vacuum the pool. You have to skim it. You have to take care of the filter in summer and close it (pool and filter) up in winter. You have to check the drains. If the liner breaks on an above ground pool, then good luck. I also believe nowadays the pools need to be fenced in, so there is also an insurance risk.
It’s a lot of work, but I got my allowance for it growing up as a kid, but I’m sure my parents were like, great, this is cheap! I think I got 10$ bucks a week for that and washing the dishes, lol.

All this. Chemicals, more electric use, propane for the heater, repairs, liner changes. Opening and closing are a lot of work.
Vacuuming, skimming, back washing the filter.
Then the upkeep on the deck that surrounds our semi inground...good Lord decks are the devil.
But don't get me wrong...i love having it. It really makes our summer. And my DD lives for it
I just wish we had better weather and s longer season

I like going to the town pool. This way my daughter usually bumps into a friend and I don't have to have people at my house.

No pool for us, my husband wants a pool in a few years when we have like $50K to throw around.. My kids love our town pool because they see so many friends.

No way!!! We can’t keep up with our lawn and I don’t allow my husband to use half of the bathrooms in the house because I am not cleaning them all. I’ve made friends that have pools and belong to the yacht clubs. Just like a boat... what’s better than a boat? A friend with a boat.

This. Back washing the filter sucked. I’ve dealt with fish tanks my whole life and the filter thing really boggled my mind. Having a pool is like having a giant fish tank. I also believe that you can do a salt water chlorine pool. But still it’s a lot of work. You also need to check the PH.
I so want another fish tank, but I just cannot put in the work. I had 5 fish tanks growing up.
ETA: our pool was taken down after a cat had kittens there (no water). My dad was afraid that we would bring another cat into the house (we had 3 at that point, and other animals). They were really cute kittens. They all found good homes.

No, we would not look at any properties with pools when buying either. Too much work and responsibility. We have a pool membership that we love instead.
This exactly. My husband wanted me to consider one but I was adamant that we were not getting one. We only looked at 1 house with a pool. It was one of the final 2 houses we decided on. Utlimately we went for the bigger house with a smaller yard and no pool and we have no regrets. We have a blow up pool and one of those giant inflatable water slide things for our son.

Yes and it’s a must for me and my family. We use it from the end of May until mid September and we don’t have a heater. I grew up with a pool and pretty much swam everyday that it wasn’t raining growing up. My kids are the same way. My kids are also excellent swimmers and they did take swimming lessons but swimming in our pool has made them much stronger swimmers. Our pool doesn’t cost us that much. We started having someone open and close our pool and that made a huge difference they come and set it up correctly and put all the chemicals in and for the rest of the season we just vacuum, filter and use chlorine. It’s never get cloudy or turns colors. That is worthy every penny!
