Restaurant for 30th Birthday - Guests pay own way

Hello all!

My cousin wants have her 30th birthday celebration and wanted to have everyone pay their own way for passed hor derves, buffet and drinks. So far the cheapest we found so far is $45 not including open bar. Could anyone provide any suggestions or recommendations for a restaurant in Nassau or Suffolk that could accommodate this for 70 guests?

I have no idea, but this is incredibly tacky to invite 70 people to a party and have them pay their own way

Sorry but I have to agree. Why not just invite people to a bar for a happy hour this way people can come by for a drink, order food if they want, and not be obligated to fund an adult's birthday party.

I would not want to be a guest at a birthday party and have to pay for my own meal. That''s not right.
If she can't afford to host that many people, perhaps she should rethink her plans to something more reasonable.
Hope your cousin doesn't expect gifts too.

I agree, def tacky.

But I’m curious, how would she even approach that? Spring it on everyone when they are there. Oh by the way guys, everyone owes me $45 plus tax and gratuity.

Tacky. I wouldn’t go! Maybe if she wanted to do like a wine tour and everyone pay a small group of friends I’ve done that and it’s nice!

I was going to do this for DHs 30th - but I ended up not. if it’s an open bar I don’t think it’s tacky for a 30th. Maybe if it was for 40...

I've always believed if you can't afford to throw a party, you don't throw one. A party is a luxury, not a necessity.
If your friends/family want to take you out for your birthday or throw you a party, they will. You don't ask them to.

Its tacky regardless of age. Don't throw a party to celebrate your birthday if you expect people to pay for themselves.

If anything, I think she should change it to, meet at xyz bar for my birthday. Sometimes you can get a drink package and people can opt in if they want but don't have to. Just skip the food and do it later after dinner.

While I agree she didn't ask for opinions, it's hard to suggest a restaurant that accommodates 70 people who will be paying separately because I'm pretty sure that doesn't exist. For that many people, you would need to close down the restaurant or book a private room and no business is going to book a party that the guests are paying for individually.

Thank you for this. I was not looking for opinions just places. Yes we were looking for a private room. I will just start calling places then. Another friend has done this but in NYC so I was just curious if anyone new of places on Long Island.

Thank you again

I was not looking for opinions, but since you asked. We were planing on sending a evite to join us to celebrate and state anyone would like to participate in an open bar the cost would be $45 etc. my cousin would pay the gratuity.

Jackie Reilly's in Bethpage does something like this. People pay and get a bracelet.

I agree. I would not attend a party that I had to pay my own way for. I can understand if we were meeting up at a bar and everyone is throwing in money but to plan an event at a restaurant and then charge everyone?

I know you weren't looking for opinions, but when you post something completely tacky and ridiculous, you have to expect it. You don't pay your own way for ANY party you are invited to. Maybe you can get away with it at 18. But really, you can't afford to have a 30th b-day party, don't. Just tell people meet at this bar at this date/time.
