Need opinions please about genetic counseling and testing

I went yesterday for my first appt and sono at 8 weeks. The midwife went over all the testing available and we decided to do the NIPT and 12 week sono. She asked if I wanted them to test for the 3 big genetic issues or 106 so we said 106. Then she asked if we were interresting in genetic counseling because I am 41 and we said yes.

Now we are second guessing this. First, my husband and I are not aware of any genetic issues in our family but we don't really know detailed family history. We are not planning on telling anyone about this pregnancy until 2nd tri bec I had two early losses before (1 chemical and 1 blighted ovum) so we can't ask them and they want me to go in 1st tri. Also, they would just discuss probabilities and probably scare the crap out of us maybe for nothing.

I was 36 when I had DD and only had the NT and regular blood work (NIPT wasn't avail at that time). I wasn't offered genetic counseling or the more extensive genetic testing.

Would you do the more extensive genetic testing (for 106 instead of the big 3 genetic issues)? What about genetic counseling if it is not recommended based on any test results?

BTW, we would not terminate if there was an issue. We would just want to be mentally prepared. TIA

Do the testing and counseling--I had a lot of genetic testing done prior
To getting pregnant but I still met with a genetic counselor after my 12 week ultrasound and NT testing--It was standard practice at my doctor's office. The counselor discussed the risk of different genetic disorders based upon age. She did not scare us but gave us a lot of information including information about further testing if the screening showed a high risk for a specific disease. I wanted to know I had support and a plan just in case anything was abnormal.

I had genetic testing counseling before getting pregnant it was through recombine. Then I sought out a specialist for what I am a carrier for. I already knew a lot about it ( PKU) but still. I had to do the genetic counseling before my RE would do the IUI. My kids were tested for PKU 3 times instead of the 1x in the hospital since I was a carrier for all mutations.
I would likely do the 106 and speak with a counselor just in case. It’s always best to be prepared!

I did no genetic testing prior to getting pregnant. Since I was over 35 I did have the NT scan and Maternity 21, I had to meet with the genetic counselor prior to the tests. I would do any testing as long as long as it wasn't CVS or amniocentesis.

I would do the 106 if it's not a huge extra cost. I think for DD3, my NIPT included a lot that they only report on if they find anything. I wasn't asked about what tests to include, except for gender. I'm not sure of all they are testing now.
I didn't see a counselor, so I'm not sure what they do. I think if you want to go and hear the information they have, then go ahead. It might worry you or it might make you feel better.

I did the testing when I was 29. I am not a carrier for anything, but it was great for peace of mind. It was really expensive though.

We met with a genetic counselor with both pregnancies. I was 38 when I delivered the first time, and just shy of 40 with my second. We weren't carriers (we had genetic testing prior to IVF), but I was concerned due to my age. We chose to have an amino with both.

I think it's always best to be mentally prepared. I know it can cause extra stress and worry, but as someone who received completely unexpected news about a genetic condition shortly after delivery, I'd rather know in advance.
