Traveling to resort in Mexico

I read about the girl that died at an all inclusive in mexico, they are saying she was drugged. Im extremly upset as the girl was only 18(same age as my daughter), now I am hearing this is happening alot in Mexico. I have a vacation with my husband set for November. Im nervous now, its not just 18 year old kids, its couples, singles of all ages. Would you still keep your vacation plans?

Re: Traveling to resort in Mexico

I'm sure others will say go, and maybe I'm overly paranoid, but my DH and I don't feel comfortable with going to Mexico at all.
I know everyone flocks there, and maybe the prices are better for these lavish resorts that you wouldn't be able to afford elsewhere, but I don't feel safe there. Especially not with my DD.
There were a lot of travel warnings recently about kidnappings etc. I know that this usually is not in the main tourist areas but traveling to and from the airports scare me, etc.

But again, I tend to be overly cautious.
I hated Jamaica and would never go back, because I felt extremely unsafe when I was there outside of the resort. And I didn't like that I had to be locked in a compound with barbed wire fences and armed guards, yes armed guards, by the pool.

DH actually refuses to even consider Mexico for vacations even though they have some really cheap deals. He went once and hated it

I'm with Nell. I would not choose Mexico because I wouldn't feel safe travelling there. Unlike Nell, I'm not overly cautious in general. However, I'm not a fan of beach vacations anyhow.

I also agree - Mexico is the one place DH and I won't go. And we are not normally overly cautious with stuff like this.

We won't travel there either. I just would have an unsafe feeling inside.

I was just in Mexico City for three days, which is probably way worse than any resort. Didn't have any issues. Airport was fine. Only issue with the city was the altitude which wouldn't be an issue if you were at a resort on the water.

I personally do not like traveling to Mexico, DR or Jamaica. Even on our cruises we do not do excursions by ourselves in those ports. But anywhere you go, you need to be vigilant. Never go anywhere alone and be careful of your surroundings. People tend to let their guard down on vacations and that can lead to trouble no matter where you are.

I mentioned on another thread there are some stunning resorts in Florida ...both coasts.

Bermuda is gorgeous and close and very safe...but only good weather until around October.

I've been to Mexico 5 times and love it there. So many activities and places to see. We rent a car and drive everywhere. Never have I felt unsafe. I can't wait to take the kids when they get older.

We have not and won't be going to Mexico. A friend of mine got very sick w parasites from a 5 star resort, and wound up with a forever disease. There is too much corruption there as well.

I was always very least of going to MX
Went for the 1st time in Nov and I loved it. Would go back again.
But everyone has to do what is best for them and what they are comfortable with. I see you cancelled. Which was the right choice for you since you were so concerned about it. You never would've relaxed enough to enjoy your self.

Look into Aruba.

I just read a disturbing article a friend posted on FB & now don't see myself going there at all. My sil goes there with girlfriends 2-3x a year & they drink the entire time. The thought of what could happen is frightening. click

Re: Traveling to resort in Mexico

We just got back from Mexico (family of 5 with kids) and a few other families. Never any issues. Didn't feel unsafe. Things like this happens everywhere, even clubs in the city. You just need to watch your surrounding, be a smart traveler. What we did was we bought alcohol bottles in Duty Free and we made our own drinks. We also had beer at the resort but it's hard to mess with beer so no problem there. We went out one night in Cancun for some dancing and fun, again we purchased bottles there and made our drinks. No ordering from bars. But we're older. There were so many kids there, drunk, high you name it. That's not Mexico's fault, these kids want to go out there and live it up. And of course there will be people who would do anything to sell or take advantage of.

Re: Traveling to resort in Mexico

I've traveled to Mexico several times, with DH and with a friend, and absolutely love it there! Have had some wonderful vacations with great food, great beaches, resorts and wonderful cultural experiences since we visit ruins. That being said, we have sadly not traveled there in years because I'm hesitant to take my children due to safety concerns.

Wow that is disturbing.
And I'm sorry but if I am going on vacation I don't want to have to buy my own bottles and make my own drinks for fear of getting bad booze or getting drugged.
What kind of a place is that if I have to worry about the booze being served to me at a so called 5 star resort???
No thanks

We're picky with our drinks. We like it a certain way and sometimes these all inclusive hotels don't carry high premium bottles. So for us it wasn't about safety but about having the drinks we like.

I've been to Mexico a bunch of times and never once felt unsafe. The only time I felt uncomfortable was at the Cabo airport - the timeshare people there are relentless!

This. I've gone, traveled by myself even and have never felt unsafe. Granted I always book transfers directly to and from the hotel.

In regards to that girl, I saw it and I really think she just got ridiculously drunk and drowned, which is totally possible. Unlimited alcohol all day can lead to some crappy decisions. Did Mexico investigate how I would've liked? No. But I think it has no reflection on how safe the country is that she passed in a pool at her resort.

I have been to Mexico plenty of times, including on spring break when I was in college, and have never had any problems. I happen to love Mexico and absolutely plan to go back with and without children.

I agree with a lot of other posters who have said that unfortunately this type of thing can happen anywhere. I'm much more worried to send my children away to college by themselves than I would be to take them on a family vacation to Mexico.

There are articles out there about iberostar . I won't be traveling to Mexico , too much corruption, the country is lawless. There are a million other beautiful places to spend my time and money.

I've vacationed in Mexico several times, all different places and it's my favorite place to go. I've never felt unsafe and we've left the resorts many times to check out the towns/island. I wouldn't let the recent Facebook articles deter me and I'm actually planning another vacation there for spring 2018.

Dh and I went to a resort in Mexico twice before we had kids (about 9 and 6 years ago) and all was fine both times. We left the resort both times and visited some of the surrounding neighborhood's on our own. But now that we have kids I don't feel comfortable going back with them.
