19 month old fighting naps and nighttime sleep/waking up suddenly
Just wanted to know if this was "a sleep regression thing" or if I should be trying to rearrange my daughters schedule etc. She . A little background- she's always been a good napper (1 nap about 2 hours since 10 months)but not the best night time sleeper. I would say she started sleeping through the night reliably around 14-15 months. CIO never worked nothing really worked for her. Now she is 19 months and Lately this is the issue: Put her down for a nap at 1:30- she takes 30-45 minutes to fall asleep w/ multiple checkins from me. Then I have to wake her up by 3:30 or 4 or she has trouble going to sleep at night. When I wake her at this time she's miserable. Other times she barely sleeps an hour after she finally goes out. At bed we put her into her crib at 8:30. Lately she takes over 30 minutes to fall asleep and often wakes at least once crying for now apparent reason. She settles back down after rubbing her back but wakes up for the day at 6:00-6:30 (used to be 7:30-8). So she is exhausted and whiney alllll day (as am I). So by the time she is finally sleeping its like 9:20 and she only goes till like 6 with at least 1 crying episode during the night. Her once 2 hour naps by the time she falls asleep are usually only an hour. Is this a normal phase (my son didn't have any sleep issues at night after 6 moths) or something else going on? She is getting her canine teeth in but thats been going on for months and months and there's always teeth coming in and usually she doesn't have any appreciable issues with it (more then her normal sleep issues). It seems like it started with her getting a bad virus/ear infection but I had her rechecked and she has no more sign of ear infection. She does have a constant cold like the rest of the daycare world. HELP!

It sounds like she is over tired. She isn't getting enough night sleep, which is affecting her day sleep, and vice versa.. it's a vicious cycle. Try for her nap at 12, hopefully she will nap until 2ish, and then you wont have to wake her up early from her nap, she can wake up rested. Then make bedtime closer to 7... at least if she goes into her bed at 7, she might fall asleep by 7:30.

Re: 19 month old fighting naps and nighttime sleep/waking up suddenly
I would try for an earlier nap but I work part time and get to the sitters at 1-130 the earliest. That's with busting my bum to finish up charts etc. if my daycare lady puts her in for a nap at 12 then I couldn't get her till later which makes picking up my son tough ( not to mention my dh didn't like the idea of having her at daycare if I'm home but that's a whole other issue lol) I have contemplated an earlier bedtime, just afraid she might start waking up even earlier but might be worth a shot.

She sounds overtired to me. You also mention a lot of checking on her, rubbing her back, etc. I'd leave her to fall asleep on her own for both day and night time sleeping.

If you're paying the same amount for daycare regardless of the time you pick her up, I'd have them put her down for a nap at 12. She'd most likely wake around 2. Otherwise I think you're in a vicious cycle. Also I wouldn't check in on her if she's not falling sleep. Sometimes I hear DS "reading/talking" 45 minutes after ive said good night to him.

Maybe she's teething. My DS slept well from 12-15 months and the regressed for like 4-5 months. I'm pretty sure it was because of teething.

Did it return to normal on its own?

More or less yes. When he was 22 months, I had pretty much had it with broken sleep (I guess 2 years of sleep deprivation will do that to you!). He was crying and I went into his room like I always did. In a stern voice, I told him that he was a big boy now and needed to go back to sleep. He is now 33 months and the only time he sleeps poorly is when we travel.

Because you've taught her when she cries, mommy comes in and rubs her back. I bet if you left her alone she wouldn't find her own way back to sleep and it would cut down on wake ups.

We've tried lettering her cry but she escalates very quickly and ends up waking up my 4 year old or even gagging I usually don't go in if it is the whiny cry only if its a screaming cry that will wake up her brother or lead to vomiting. I also don't want her to cry if she is pain
edited to add my son did great with CIO and would settle down if we ignored him. We never entered his room unless we were sure we had to because once we went in he wouldn't go back down. After like 1 night of CIO he honestly never woke up at night again unless super sick. She just doesn't seem to respond that way. She is extremely stubborn and will literally work herself up to the point of being sick.
