Re: CHRISTMAS MENU!
I love going to the market Thanksgiving day and and cooking everything that morning. Fairway will be closed Christmas day so now I have to go christmas eve.. still dont know what Im making
Im having my MIL and bf and my mom over christmas day.
Apps- grilled shrimp, charcuterie, latkas
meal- pineapple glazed ham, crown lamb roast lasagna, spinach pie, Grilled asparagus, lemon potatos and roasted veggies.
I also want to make a peking duck to nibble on. Normally it takes 4.5 hours to make. I did a trial run two days ago by spatchcocking it to see if it can work and its wasnt as good, but still better than any place ive had it. It took 1 hour in the oven vs 4.5. But a single duck cant feed 5 people but since im having a ton of other stuff, itll be fine. But I also dont want it to come off as ""look at me, look what I can do" type of thing.
Should I skip the duck? DHs fam is jewish, so jews eat chinese food on christmas... thought it would be a cute thing to do. yay/ nay?

Cute, but not worth the work. My in-laws are Jewish too and I asked if they wanted latkes since it's also Hanukkah and they told me "that's not very Christmasy." I had to clue them in on the fact that it was Hanukkah. They had no idea. They're excited for ham
My menu...
Apps: Prosciutto Soppressata Assorted cheeses Caprese skewers Baked brie Spinach dip Mini quiche (DD LOVES quiche)
First course: Penne ala vodka with peas Salad
Dinner: Ham Turkey Mashed potatoes Sweet potatoes Stuffing Cranberry sauce String beans & carrots Asparagus Corn Rolls
Dessert: Cookies, peppermint bark and whatever my MIL shows up with

Re: CHRISTMAS MENU!
I would suggest making that duck! I love homemade duck on Christmas.
It is EXTREMELY greasy though FYI.
I made it the last five or six years. I'm taking a break this year because I just want to try something new, but am sure I'll make it again.

how do you do the filet mignon?
I get center cut filets, leave them out for 30-45 mins to get to room temp, pat down with paper towels and then heavily salt and pepper both sides. Pre-heat oven to 400'. Once I'm ready to sear, then I add grape seed oil to my pan and make sure the pan is hot and add 2 filets, and don't move them for 3 mins, I then flip it over and sear the other side for 3 mins. I then put them in a baking dish and add a stalk of rosemary and a slice of Kerry gold butter on top and repeat until I've seared all the filets. depending how you like your meat will depend on how long it goes in the oven. We like med-rare so I put it in for 5-6 min.

Re: CHRISTMAS MENU!
I'm in charge of desserts I can travel with.
By request: Bacardi Cherry Pie By tradition: My Gingerbread Cookies (usually about 40) these are also passed out and taken home. I always bring a third dessert of my own choice. This year it's going to be Rum Cake I was thinking of picking up a lemon bundt cake as well but no time.
Honestly since I've been on this new med this year, food has no appeal to me. I don't care about what's for dinner. I'll eat very little of any of it.
They are going crazy as always. I know there's some gizzard dressing (ew) and some meat, tamales but I won't care.
To me xmas is like Thanksgiving. Just thankful to be there and grateful for family and that we are able to be together.

Re: CHRISTMAS MENU!
Have you tried the duck like this? Peking duck
I haven't done it yet, but I want to try it. you prep it the night before, but it should only take about 90 min to cook.
I do think 3 meats is a lot for 5 people, especially if 2 don't eat much. Do the Jewish family members eat ham? I would just make lamb (because I don't like ham), but I know not everyone likes that.
my MIL is cooking- I think it is some type of pasta, with meatballs & sausages most likely. I'm bringing a yule log & cookies.
my mother usually does manicotti, chicken parm, meatballs, sausages, salad and sometimes oven fried chicken ( it's her favorite.) While similar to my MIL's menu, I'm sad to miss i this year.
