I need to have my gall bladder out. HELP - FINAL UPDATE

So it was just confirmed through my gastroenterologist that my gall bladder is not functioning at all and will need to have it out.

I'm freaking out. I don't even know where to begin to find a good surgeon.

Any recs and personal experience?

Dr Khalife who operates out of Winthrop took out my gallbladder. He came very highly recommended- I knew a few people who had their gallbladder removed by him as well! The recovery really isn't that bad. Good luck!

I need to have my gall bladder out. HELP

I don't have a recommendation b/c I was in NC when I had mine out, but as far as surgeries so, it was pretty "easy." I had been sick for over a month (lost 20 pounds b/c I was afraid to eat), before they finally took it out. The surgery was on a Wednesday and I was back at work on Monday. They did it laparoscopicly (3 tiny holes) and I heard that the worse pain was when the air escaped your shoulders after the sugery (they basically blow you up like a balloon to see everything clearly and the air slowly escapes on its own over a few days). If that happens, try to sit up as much as possible b/c it lessens the pain. I didn't experience it much, thankfully. They gave me codeine for the pain, but it knocked me out so I weaned myself off by Saturday. I was just taking Tylenol after that.

I was slow moving on Monday at work, but I had a desk job so I was well enough to drive myself and sit most of the day.

Surgery is always scary, but I found the multiple trips to the ER b/c I was in horrible pain after eating to be a much bigger issue.

Best of luck!

Re: I need to have my gall bladder out. HELP

I had mine done as an emergency admitance through the ER at Good Sam so I can't really recommend a surgeon.
I mean he was great and all, but he was just the on call surgeon there at the time.

But to ease your mind, the laproscopic procedure was a breeze.

I had the surgery around 1030 am. Left to go home around 4 pm.
I went out to dinner with DH the next night.
Barely took the narcotic pain killers except for maybe the first night to sleep better.

And like the PP said, my shoulders hurt more than anything else. I felt like my shoulders had been karate chopped for a few days. Very painful. I was putting heat on them and taking the pain meds and motrin more for that pain than my incisions.

I was back at work in a week. And I had a 5 week old at the time.

I had no stitches- just surgical glue. No scars. It was all so tiny.

I had very little pain- just sore and slow moving for a day or so like the PP said.

And the relief of not having that horrendous pain from the gallstone attacks was the best feeling in the world. I remember waking up from surgery and feeling so elated that the god awful pain I had for 3 straight days was all gone!

Re: I need to have my gall bladder out. HELP

i don't have a recommendation because i had mine out in NYC columbia pres... back in 1996. mine was an emergency operation; i didn't have a choice who cut me open.

as far as the operation and recovery: of all the operations i've had, this one was not bad. i went under the knife on a thursday, was back home by saturday. DS was not yet one, so lifting him was a little difficult... it was easier to get down to his level than to lift him.

best of luck to you.

Sorry I don't have a rec but my sister had hers out years ago. I don't think the recovery was that bad. I would ask your gastro if he has any surgeon recommendations. Good luck!!

Dr. Marc Finkelstein - Suffolk Surgical Associates 631-665-8200 he is associated with Southside Hospital in Bayshore.

He did my husbands surgery to remove his gallbladder (not an emergency surgery). He was very good.

Dr Richard Shinbrot in Massapequa. He's associated with Plainview Hospital. I loved him. I was super nervous and he was great and so was the staff at the outpatient facility there. It was a fairly easy surgery as far as surgeries go. It was def an easier recovery than my C-section! Good luck!!

So what you're saying is I can put this off? Lol

I've had attacks for the last year. I'm actually kind of annoyed that after two er visits and three gastroenterologists it was finally figured out. Lesson to be your own advocate when you think something is wrong don't stop until you figure it out.

You can but don't.
Because then you'll end up in the ER like me with excruciating pain worse than labor that hasn't gone away in 3 days and you are vomiting every time you try to eat anything.
And then you'll have no choice.
Better to do it now on your terms and planned out!
Because you dont' want an attack while on vacation or something

Mine was done as an emergency. I spent 2 weeks in the hospital before they could figure out what the problem was.

Sure you can.
If you're OK living with the attacks. And everything mentioned above.

I had a few attacks. Literally curled up in a fetal position on the floor was the only was I could get comfort. When they told me what it was I wanted to run to the hospital for the surgery! But I had it scheduled and just prayed I didn't have another attack.

Re: I need to have my gall bladder out. HELP

Don't wait. get it done ASAP. Waiting will just up your chances of needing it done as an emergency and in that case, you get whoever is there at that time. At least this way, you choose your surgeon and can plan for it.

I know a lot of people who have had this done and according to so many, it happens to women who recently had a baby. All cases were really easy recoveries.

I've already had two er visits. I've had attacks since that I was vomiting. That's what triggered the appointments and testing. Annoyed nobody caught it until I went to a third gastro.

I'm def going to plan it. Will look into surgeons

Just had mine out a month ago. Very easy surgery and recovery. You can totally not get the surgery but you would have to tick to a very low fat diet l. The attacks will keep happening and they are not fun.

I need to have my gall bladder out. HELP

I don't know where you live, but I had my gall bladder removed by dr vosswinkel at stony brook. He is amazing surgeon and I would recommend him 1000%. My mom used him after me and nothing but rave reviews from her as well.

Ps: the surgery is laparoscopic and very easy... He told me I'd hate him by tomorrow and even more so the day after but then I'd start feeling better. My recovery was exactly how he put it. Hes so very down to earth and his name pops up all the time in news for emergency trauma surgery. He is fantastic at what he does and I have very very minimal scarring to boot!

And NO do not wait for that final attack that sends you to the ER. That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. My last attack lasted 8 long hours.... So much worse than labor... Get it out now!
