I think if you are called and you have a planned vacation, they throw you back in to the jury pool. I want to say it is one of the first things they ask if the dates work for you.
If you want to post pone because you are going on vacation you have to do it on a time frame.
I am not 100% though.

You can postpone once, no questions asked, and you pick another date in the next 6 months. Then you have to show up, though.

jury duty
i got called once when i had vacation plans the following week. when you get there, they give a list of circumstances - one of them was upcoming travel, and if you met them you had to go to the office - when i went to the desk they asked when i could serve and sent me another summons then. this was in queens.

You can postpone via an automated phone system.
I did that.
It's super easy.
But you can only postpone once. And you get to pick the date to move it to. So just pick a week in the future that you know you won't be away.
