that poor father. the way that man will torture himself for the rest of his life...

I'm not sure if any of the comments are directed at me since I was the first to vent about it.
But let me be clear. I'm not blaming the parents.
I have a 2yo DS and I can't imagine how horrible it must be for them to have seen this happen. It was just a bad luck freak accident that no one in a million years would have expected.
I'm just frustrated that people see a no swimming sign and still choose to go even partially in the water. It shouldn't matter what the reason for the sign is. It shouldn't matter what state you're from. You shouldn't need a giant alligator icon.
And I guess that's what makes me so angry- that these days every single, tiny, little detail needs to be spelled out for people or else they won't listen. Like needing to say "hot" on a coffee cup, or those insane disclaimers on tv commercials not to try this, that, or the other at home. There's just no personal responsibility anymore and I'm tired of it. And it's not specific to this incident or direct at this family in particular. This just brought up the feelings for me and maybe it's not the right place to discuss them, but this is where it came out.
With all due respect, I think this is a very narrow view of things.
The majority of people on this thread have stated that they interpret "do not swim" differently from "do not go in the water." I think it's a stretch to say that the majority of people on here do not show any personal responsibility, but that's what one would conclude from your post.
Plenty of people take "personal responsibility" all day, every day, but it doesn't make the news.
I categorize that statement the same way I do statements like "people are too permissive with their children" or "people never X" or "people always Y." It's a generalization made out of frustration and usually without considering all the facts - or how it might make others feel.

It would be like setting up picnic tables in the gorilla habitat at the zoo.
Stupidity.
If you think of it that way you would never visit FL again. There are gators at every park, beach area, neighborhood etc.

I keep looking at my son today (he's only 3) and I just cannot fathom the thought of an alligator snapping down on him and dragging him into the water all alone and scared. It is just so horrific.  And while I might be one of the ones on here that interpret "No Swimming" to mean don't go in the water I still feel so incredibly sad for that family. I just can't even imagine, it's absolutely horrible. I just hope for that baby's sake that it all ended fast and without much pain.

I was refraining from getting into the back and forth bs on this thread but I need to get this out.
The boy was wading, not swimming. He was not in a bathing suit. He was on the shore, in a foot of water in arms length of his father. To blame the parents is disgusting. And to say it's common sense, no it's not. Like I said, I went to college in Florida so for me, I would assume gators were everywhere. They're from Nebraska and do.not have this.
And for all those that are so well educated about gators, did you know that breeding season just ended and the mother gators have their nests on the shoreline? If anybody goes near it (on the shore) they will attack.
As for the signs, no swimming does not mean do not stand in the water. There needs to be signs everywhere there are alligators. If you can't control the lagoon with access to canals and other bodies of water,then don't have a freaking beach with chairs, volleyball etc.
And most importantly, my first reaction is that of horror, empathy and unbelievable sadness for this family. I'm sorry and sad that for some people that's not their first reaction. Just be thankful this isn't your right now, which for some of you, you think it never could be.

Disney has visitors from around the world, to say they should have known is ridiculous. You cannot recover as a person after something like this, you just can't.

I am horrified by this. It was always obvious to me that there were likely alligators in the waters at Disney, but I am someone who watches a lot of discovery channel and animal planet. I understand that most people may not realize this. All of the land at Disney is just filled in swampland; it is impossible to keep nature completely at bay. We stayed at the Waldorf, a resort on Disney property, this past winter, and there were signs everywhere clearly warning people to stay away from the water because of the presence of snakes and alligators. Disney knows there are gators, yet they chose not to inform their guests. Ads for the resorts show people jet skiing on the lake and sunbathing on the beach. The artificial beach. I've always loved Disney but I am disgusted right now. Someone in that company decided that it wasn't good PR to mention alligators on the no swimming signs. And that poor family lost their baby in front of their eyes.

There was a story many years ago I saw on DISboards about a boy being bitten by poisonous snake after he dropped his toy while he was walking and it went right off the sidewalk into the mulch and spent some time in ICU. He never left the path, just reached in to grab it, and was bitten several times. I'm sure he wasn't the first to get bit, and won't be the last, but I've never seen a snake warning anywhere on Disney property either. They should put a wildlife warning in their literature and have posted signs.
So add not allowing your kids to reach into the brush on their lush sidewalks at the resorts or parks to the safety tips on your next visit.

Don't the alligators come out of the water occasionally?? So would it have mattered if he was only in the sand?? I know my dad has encountered gators on golf courses in FL out of the water.

As shocking as this is, and tragic, I'm very surprised at Disney's lack of appropriate signage since their main focus is supposed to be safety and foreseeing possible accidents and scenarios that may happen. Some things you cannot foresee but alligators in the lagoon they know they are there and it is their responsibility to warn their guests.

Yes - I've seen alligators on the banks of bodies of water in the south.

At least they found his body.

Approximately 1.3 million wild alligators are in Florida, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, but the odds of getting attacked is about one in 2.5 million.

I can't get over this poor family took their kids to Disney on a dream vacation, those kids must have been so happy to be there, and now this, a tragedy that has changed their lives forever. All because of Disney's negligence. I hope they sue. It won't bring their baby back but Disney deserves to pay for this. This could've been any family on these boards. Look how many people interpret the sign the same way this family did. Disney fuked up here.

I am surprised that they found his body to be honest. I didn't think that would happen. Sad sad sad!
...and they said his body was intact....so that goes with the theory that alligators just drown them, then hide them so to speak, then come back for them.

This WORD FOR WORD! The comments towards the family are atrocious! So many "holier than though" and Monday morning quarterbackers out there. What ever happened to empathy and kindness. These people weren't neglectful. They weren't abusive. This was a huge tragedy - an awful one and all involved are victims. I feel sad for the parents, siblings and those who witnessed this or aided in the search. It's sad for all those involved and will most likely haunt them forever. Prayers are needed not judgemental condemnation.

They can tolerate salt water and def can be In Brackish water. While you won't see them come out of the ocean then can crawl across land and come from the marshy bay side of any place. So basically anywhere you are in FL they will be.
