Can I ask what difference it makes? Why are people going back and forth on this thread on whether he did it because he hated gays or because of his religious beliefs?
What difference does that really make?
If it's purely because he's Muslim, then all Muslims are bad, and we must ban them from the country, monitor their religious houses of worship, etc. Many people in this country believe this, and it perpetuates the hatred for a large group of people, but never addresses the actual problem of why people are shooting other people.
I don't have any answers, and I don't think any broad-stroke, single response is the answer (from any political point of view).

Yeah I don't think it's as black and white as that at all.
God knows what makes a crazy person tick.
Personally, I think it was a combination of things that caused him to chose this place as his target.

I don't think there is evidence of him being gay. There is evidence of him scouting out places to commit his crime.
Several witnesses said he was picking up men over the course of at least 3 years.
So even if he was gay….he still killed 50 gay people and himself due to his religious beliefs. He could have just killed himself if he was struggling with his sexuality or whatever others are implying. He was not mentally ill, these killings were based on his religious beliefs bottom line IMO.
True, but it changes the motive from being radical Islamic fundamentalist to disturbed individual. That fact does not diminish the atrocity, but it changes the conversation.
So why then was this terrorist cheering when they announced the 9/11 attacks? Reports of fellow students saying he stood up and CHEERED when 9/11 happened. So this is just a sick individual still? Not a terrorist based in Muslim beliefs?
