Anyone else working Christmas Eve
I have to work a full day.
I would have asked to take off but I am new at this institution and am coming to end of my probation period. So I can't take any vacation days until then.
I didn't mind but I was hoping to at least be let out by 2, so I could make it home in time to go to mass with my family and give my DD her birthday gifts before heading to my family's for dinner.
Turns out I have to stay until 5, in case something comes up Meanwhile, I barely was able to get anything done yesterday because no one is in for the rest of the week. Imagine how many people will be out tomorrow???
Sorry just venting...

Re: Anyone else working Christmas Eve
My company is opening but will probably close early I don't mind since Christmas Eve is a non event for us- we never have plans. But I do use it to finish up wrapping, baking etc

Anyone else working Christmas Eve
We're working but regardless I have to leave by 1:15 to get DD because her daycare closes at 2. I think last year the whole office left by 1-1:30 anyway.

Re: Anyone else working Christmas Eve
We normally close at 3pm. This year we are closing at 1pm.
When I worked retail I ALWAYS volunteered to work Xmas eve. I'm Jewish and wanted people to enjoy the holiday.

Re: Anyone else working Christmas Eve
My office is closed but my husband is working. His office is never closed on Christmas Eve. Sometimes, they leave early, but his supervisor & manager are both out & they do need someone to be there "in case something comes up" and this year it will be him, b/c a- they work staggered shifts & his is the latest, and b- is he is on call anyway for anything that comes up form 5:30 to midnight.
We don't do anything for Christmas eve- his mother did invite us over for lunch ( forgetting that he works every year) but we will see all the same people on Christmas day.

Re: Anyone else working Christmas Eve
I was supposed to. Where I work well, we are always open But, for me, I'm not "essential" so we have a holiday schedule that we follow. However, Christmas Eve is not considered a holiday -- Christmas Day I have off for. Although, Friday happens to be my day off anyway! So, I was just going to come in tomorrow and assume (pray) they let the non-essential people go early.
Yeah that didn't work out. In the beginning of the week my son's daycare was like -paraphrasing here- "yeah, we only have TWO kids out of like a billion coming in on Christmas Eve - we are closing. We are not staffing an entire building for two little rugrats" Since my son was one of the two rugrats, I had to go to my boss and be like, I can't come in - I have no one to watch my son. Since, in my custody agreement, this particular year I have Christmas Eve and my ex has Christmas Day with Julian.
Boss was TOTALLY fine about it but still, I kind of felt bad. Although, I think it worked out because that's my only day to celebrate Christmas with my goober. KWIM?? So, I'm really happy actually.
My SO is "essential" so he is working from 8-4pm and then will come straight to my parents where my extended family and friends all gather to celebrate.
Excited for all this to be over, quite frankly.

Re: Anyone else working Christmas Eve
My office is closed, but my mom is working a full day AND hosting that evening She's so stressed. She just started this job and unfortunately couldn't take off. This is the first year in 30 years that she will be working on Christmas Eve. She always hosts every.single.year. and it's a TON of work. She has over 20 people. I honestly don't know how she's going to do it. She wont get home until after 4PM.

Anyone else working Christmas Eve
I am considered an essential employee (even though my functions are totally NOT essential... my entire department is considered to be), so I will be here. We are on skeleton crew, though, so it will be an easy day. Hoping my boss springs us a little early. Regardless of whether it's a gift or I have to charge my time, I will have to leave a little early anyway as my daycare is closing at 4.

At the moment working a full day. If this happens I will be sooo pissed off. We used to have early close but they took those away so now it's up to our bosses discretion when they remember us. I threatened his assistant with bodily harm if she forgot to tell me like she did last year, she promised she wouldn't forget aboit me

Re: Anyone else working Christmas Eve
My company is closing at 3, but I have to stop at 1 to get my kids from day care.
At other companies that have stayed open the full day, people usually start leaving around lunch time.
I'm Jewish so it doesn't really bother me one way or another except that i have to pick up my children. However, I don't get off for any Jewish holidays, and have to use vacation days, so I don't see this as any different for people who have to use the days.

Re: Anyone else working Christmas Eve
we're working a 1/2 day, but that really means we'll be here all day.
i know that something will come up and they'll want to take the call. so, i'm mentally prepared to be here a full day.

I took off but, we're supposed to close at 3, typically the higher ups start dismissing people between 12-1.

It's really not a holiday so it surprises me how many people ARE off. The vast majority if people I know aren't.

Anyone else working Christmas Eve
When I was working, we worked a full day. Occasionally they would let us leave at 3 or 4 but I worked in the City so I would get home until about 6 anyway. My DH's company gives them off xmas eve, new years eve and the day after thanksgiving. They also allow other faiths to take off or leave early for their major holidays.
Xmas eve was always a late holiday for us because someone always was working, we never got started until 6 or 7 pm.
