Re: Long....Working with a friend
How would you handle the summers off, school holidays etc? It seemed to be an issue when you worked there before, wouldn't that still be a major issue?
If you have to pay for child care, summer camps, etc- it may not be all that much more money in the long run to go work there again.

Re: Long....Working with a friend
I obviously don't know you or your friend, but based on what you described and my own personal experience dealing with people, your friend will continue being the person she is, i.e. things will continue not being up to her standards and you will most likely lose each other's friendship in the process.
As far as summers, I think being off same months as your kids is priceless. Unless the old place is doubling your salary, I don't think it is worth is!

Long....Working with a friend
Obviously everyones financial situation is different but will the 12k really make that much of a difference in your lifestyle/finances after you account for taxes and the fact that you are (presumably) working 2 more months out of the year and may have to account for child care during those months? It may amount to a very little financial difference and unless the job is putting you on a different career path that you are interested in following-- sounds like its not worth the stress!

Re: Long....Working with a friend
Id stay in the school district. Summer camp and childcare for school holidays will cost a lot. Also consider the cost of driving to nassau.

Re: Long....Working with a friend
If you cherish her friendship; I would not go back. You were both lucky enough that last time didnt sever your relationship. Let that be your one & only warning.
For the sake of both you; I think its best you dont accept the offer to go back.
Extra money isn't always everything.

Re: Long....Working with a friend
First, no way because I would kill to work on a school schedule!!!!!
Second and much more important, the full time summer camps here charge at least 4,000 per kid for 8 weeks. Times that by 2 kids, 8 k and it's really not worth the pay increase at all.

Long....Working with a friend
Unless you can figure out a way to handle your friend, just the way she is (because you cannot change her, only the way you deal with her), then I would not go back. But even if you could be ok with working with her again, it doesn't sound like it makes a lot of sense, financially

If it didn't work out before, it probably won't work out this time. I would pass.

Re: Long....Working with a friend
I hate working with friends and never recommend working with my own. But. If you need the money you'll make it work.
If you don't have to pay for childcare then do it.
Sit down with your friend and speak about your concerns.
$20 an hour is great. Did you like the job and your friend was the only issue? (beside the school schedule thing). Will they be lenient if you need to leave for anything school related, sick kid etc. Those are all huge factors for me)

Re: Long....Working with a friend
I wouldn't work for a friend. No matter how great the job might be - I'm not interested in mixing my professional life with my friendships. Being put in a position to report to a friend in an established situation is one thing - like if one of my friends at work got promoted and I was suddenly reporting to them ........
but in your situation - no. You couldn't handle the work environment before, if your friend is a 'perfectionist' and you don't feel you can deliver, why put yourself in that position?

Re: Long....Working with a friend
I would stay where you are now. It sounds like the other job caused you more stress and worry about when your kids are off. I would love to work on a school schedule!
