Part-timers and holiday bonuses
Hi everyone,
I have a former full-time employee who decided to become part-time in 2015 (to go back to school.) She only works 8 hours a week and gets compensated $23 an hour.
My question to you is, if you were her, how much would you expect your boss to give you as a holiday bonus. In the past, we have given her about $1,000. I want to give her less, but I am concerned with her finding out that other employees received more and her getting upset.
She is an integral part of our team but she is definitely someone who likes to stir the pot.

Part-timers and holiday bonuses
If I cut my hours to 8 hours a week, I would not expect what I've gotten in previous years and I would expect the full timers to get more. I think even half would be very generous.

Re: Part-timers and holiday bonuses
We get a weeks pay before taxes (our bonuses are in cash)... so since she's only working 8 hours, I'd give her About $200 - a tiny bit more than what SHE would make in a week, b/c $184 is a weird amount to give.

Part-timers and holiday bonuses
When did she become part time: early 2015 (i.e. January) or late 2015 (i.e. September)? If she was full-time for most of the year, then I think it warrants a higher bonus. However, if she has been part-time for most of the year, then it warrants a lower bonus.

Re: Part-timers and holiday bonuses
When I worked part time I never received a holiday bonus. Bonuses are generally for F/T employees. If you're going to give her one, I would give her 1 week's pay.

She became part-time in January... I think a weeks pay sounds good. Its so hard when employees talk and i dont want her to get annoyed since she has been with us from the beginning.

She can not expect a $1,000 bonus for dropping from what I would assume was a 40 hour work week to an 8 hour work week. $200 is fine.

I would think $200 is more than good. If you are part time at my company you get $300- however we are a VERY large organization and part time is 21.5 hours a week. She cannot expect $1000 like she normally got. If she has concerns she can come talk to you. But honestly people should just appreciate they even get a bonus. It's not required unless specified in a contract. For example, DH when he started at his company, no matter his salary he's guaranteed a 15% bonus yearly. However at the discretion of the director based on performance and other factors can get more.

If you're worried about her blabbing then figure out how much the salaried people get for their bonus hourly and then give that to her for her amount of hours.
If salaried people work 40 hours a week and their bonus is 1000 then their bonus is 0.48 an hour. So her bonus should be 199.68 if she is 8 hours a week.

Re: Part-timers and holiday bonuses
I don't understand how anyone could get upset or complain about getting a smaller bonus if they only work 8 hours a week.
$200-$300 sounds fine to me.

This! if she does get upset (which I would not understand) this is how you would explain the breakdown so she understand how you came up with that number. She should be very thankful.

This is how I figure too. Assuming she worked a 40 hour work week, she's working 1/5 of the time so she should get a 1/5 of her bonus.
