Would you take this job?

So I have been miserable at my job for a long time, but I stay b/c there is a great daycare here and I am close to home (15 mins), etc. But the pay isn't the best and I work very long hours at times with very little recognition. I feel stuck and I just suck it up b/c my children are well taken care of and the commute is quick.

A friend called last night and offered me a job. Its a $50K increase! Chat Icon BUT it's in NYC, which is a 1.45min commute for me Chat Icon The upside is that the culture is laid back and there is a potential to work from home 2xper week. I'd gain career experience managing someone. whereas here, i don't have that. with the pay increase I would be able to afford to still send my kids to the same daycare they are in.

Yes - as long as working from home 2x were a definite. I think that would help offset the long commute.

Re: Would you take this job?

Generally, I'm all about convenience for all the reasons you identified. However, this is such a huge jump in terms of salary and career advancement that I think I'd take it. I would look to negotiate the ability to work from home up front. I don't see how that would hurt you. Right away you will get a feel for how "laid back" the culture is and they will get the feeling that while you want the job, work life balance is important.

In my mind, the worst case scenario would be you take the job and it doesn't work out. But, you would, imo, be left in a position to find a job making much more money than you currently do.

Re: Would you take this job?

I am in the minority - you would be commuting 3 hours a day compared to 30 minutes. Not withstanding train problems that happen frequently. 50k is a lot of money but you need to take into account the additional taxes and commuting costs as well as the lost time with your child.

I commute in the city. door to door is just under 2 hrs. There are days it sucks....but in general I don't mind. If you can swing the 2 days at home then its a no brainer!!!! Even without the 2 days at home you have to think about it as a career move unless you just want a job and not a career.

Do you mean the commuter tax? That was stopped in 1999.

No I mean increased income taxes as well as the increased cost of commuting. The LIRR is not cheap

Nope, the LIRR is not cheap. But I'd think that even if the OP lived on the very tip of Montauk she would still make out on the positive end of the gauge if she is going to get a 50K increase.

My DH just switched from working 30 mins away on LI to a NYC job. The price difference in commuting was 2K a year for train and subway (only gas, not including car wear and tear, insurance, etc). He got a 40K increase so again it still makes sense financially.

No doubt it will pay off financially but sometimes it isn't just about the money. She will definitely have more at the end of the day but is it worth it to her and her family.

Oh of course.
I just know I always thought it was so much more to commute, and I was surprised after doing the actual calculations for our LIRR zone (Babylon) it wasn't really that much different.

Re: Would you take this job?

I would take it if my DH worked close to home/daycare/school OR if I had a great/reliable support sytem that could pick up my kids if they were sick.

I work in the city. The only time I hate it is if one of my babies is sick and I need to get home quickly. The work from home option is also a must. Good Luck!!

I would take it. Especially since you currently work long hours and aren't happy/being recognized for it.

I commute into the city too. 1.5 hours each way. You get used to it. You're miserable where you are. Take the job..that's almost $5Gs a month extra plus you are management.

The commute is no joke, I use to do it back when I was working and you kind of get used to it but it's still pretty sucky. That being said, it helps that you can work from home 2X/wk. Also, $50K is some increase, that's a tough one to pass up. I'd give this offer some serious consideration, if I were you I'd be leaning towards taking it. Good luck!

Re: Would you take this job?

Thanks for all the responses. I am going to meet with the company for a formal interview. I need to get more information in regard to the work from home situation, that is what will make or break it for me.

my DH is close by and has a flexible schedule to be able to get DC if something happens. even working in the city, i'd still get home earlier than i do now - if you can even believe that!

the mom side of me is feeling guilty since i'll just be further from DC but the personal side of me knows i need to be happy and i'm ready for a change.

Don't ever feel guilty. They have zero concept of the distance and IMO its about the quality of time rather than the quantity. Plus with the extra money you can make a vacation fund or something else to have them look forward to.

I have been in the city since before my DS was born.....never once has he said mommy you are so far away or I wish you were home with me. Its just his normal. Plus every now and then he gets to take the train with me and that alone is worth it for him!!!!
