Tell me why I should take this job offer

I am currently on maternity leave until mid December. I have been on the Civil Service list for 2 years but have finally been getting a decent amount of canvas letters the past few months. I was offered a position this week and I need to give an answer by Monday. I have a 4 week old and do not have childcare set up yet.

The two biggest downfalls to taking the new position are the 15k pay cut and cutting my maternity leave with DD short.

I know in the long run I won't think as much about not being able to spend an extra month with DD and I will have holiday breaks to spend time with her in which I wouldn't be able to at my current position.

If you could swing it financially, would you take the pay cut?

Current Position-
9-5 (8:30-5 from Memorial Day to Labor Day)
+There for 3 years.
+Commute 20-35 minutes
-No raise last year
-Owners are at retirement age so things are changing.
+I am comfortable with what I do.
+I like most of the brokers and carriers I with
-2 weeks vacation, 3 sick days, 0 personal days
+Summer Fridays - get out at 2:30
+Lenient with making up time for Dr appointments

New Position
8-4 (get out at 2pm for 5 weeks over the summer)
-15k pay cut (ouch)
-I would have to cut my maternity leave short by 1 month.
+Commute 15-20 minutes
+Have a contract so there will be annual raises
+Union
+Job Stability
+Have all school holiday's off in addition to 2 weeks vacation. 13 sick days and 5 personal days
- need to wait a year to use time off.
-Do NOT have summers off

EDIT - DH is union so I do not have to worry about health insurance. I'll get a buy back for not using it. That is already factored in to the pay cut.

Honestly, right now I'd stay where you are.............especially with a new baby at home. I feel like your current job at least knows you and you've proven yourself so if you need time off when the baby gets sick they will be more understanding than a new job. Aside from that, the new job doesn't really sound SO much better AND the pay cut is a big negative. Good luck with your decision.

I would take the new job!! Honestly, it is not that easy to get civil service jobs (as you know being on the waiting list so long) and I think while it may suck at first - the pay cut and going back early- all the other benefits totally out weigh that. I think you would regret it later on. Now that my dd is in school I would give ANYTHING to have that schedule. I also wouldn't be so quick to say a newer job wouldnt be understanding to family situations. I worked at my last job for years and they would get annoyed at things I had to take leave for. I started a new job and they were so family friendly it was great.

This
And the fact that I think you want to take this new job deep down after reading your post, and the subject line. Go with your gut, and your heart. Good luck!

If you could swing it financially, I would probably go with job #2 only because it sounds like it is more stable. With regards to summer you still get out early which is great!

New job sounds great long term! I would be sadder about the shortened maternity then the pay cut...... I would go for it, the summer hours and extra time off will be worth it

I would go with the new job. There are more benefits in long run - better hours, shorter commute, early release in the summer, school holidays off. As a FTWM - these perks outweigh money by a land slide.

I feel like this covers the pay cut- instead of paying for child care you get more time with your kid

Take the new job. I did something similar last year after I had my DS. I went from working in a private school to the NYC DOE. Great choice because it was a better commute than my old job, summers are optional, hours better, union, etc. However, I had to take a pay cut. I will go back up but for now it is a pay cut. But for all those practical reasons, best decision. so DO IT!

new job! for all the reasons above. Its going to suck to cut your maternity leave short but in the long run, you are getting more time with your child.

Do you know the expected percentage of the annual raise? How long will it take you to get back where you are now salary wise?

Also, is there a pension? If so, that would seal the deal for me.

If you factor in the pension, and the probably very low medical insurance contributions, the pay may not be that much lower. I'd consider taking the new job.

I would stay at the old job. I think having a position you are comfortable with may ease the transition back to work after maternity leave. Starting a new position with a newborn starting daycare at the beginning of cold and flu season seems like a recipe for disaster- Do you have back up child care if your child gets sick? A new job usually comes with a probation period that prohibits days off.
