STTN help

My little guy is 5.5 months and is up every 1--3 hours. I can not get him to fall back to sleep without nursing. shushing, back pats, lullabiess do not work. Any advice other than CIO? My ped said he is not waking because of hunger, just comfort and recommended CIO.

If you did CIO, how did you go about it.

I am back to work and in need of some serious rest.

My DS (16 months) has pretty much always been a bad sleeper, but the worst sleep was between 4-6 months. Looking back, I have no idea how I functioned. I was more or less a zombie.

Have you introduced solids yet? At 5.5-6 months, I did that in conjunction with CIO and he began STTN. Then every 2 months or so he'd get sick and would regress once again anywhere from 1 week-2 months. DS started to sleep better at year. Now at 16 months, he still is not the best sleeper. He usually goes to bed at 7:30 and wakes between 4:30-5:30 and nurses and then goes back to sleep until 6:30-7:30 (although sometimes he still wakes up once in the middle of the night...)

As for CIO, I let him cry - I do not go in - for my DS that would make it worse. The few times I've done it, he has actually only cried for one night for maybe 15 minutes.

I did CIO for each of my boys at 6 months. I did bedtime routine (books and song), put them down drowsy, turned on the soother, and left. I went back after 10 mins if they cried and sang a song while rubbing back or belly. Then I'd leave. I went back after 11 minutes if there was crying and repeat. Then 12 minutes, etc. DS1 was amazing. I never went in more than 2x in a night and he was no longer crying after 3 days. He also used to wake up in the am and play in his bed. DS2 took a little over a week and sometimes we would have to go in 3-4 times a night. Now, DS1 (2.5yrs old) sleeps from 830-8 and DS2 (9 months) sleeps from 7-7.

CIO is harder on you than it is on them. I cried a lot when doing it with DS1. I felt like a terrible mom. It made everyone happier though. CIO is definitely not for everyone. Good luck with whatever you choose!

I've always just snuggled or nursed dd at night. I've never been up up with her at night though-I've always been half asleep or sleeping myself. I considered cio for about .02 seconds, and I couldn't stand the thought.

i did CIO with both of my kids
DD was around the 5 month age when we did it.
I read that you should go in and comfort them when they cry, but not pick them up from the crib...well that did NOT work for DD. it only made her more hysterical. so i literally just let her cry and never went into her. i would watch her on the monitor. i attempted it around 4.5 months and night one i gave in...she got way too hysterical, i did not feel right doing it. but a month later she cried but not hysterically and she was able to soothe herself. after night 2 it worked. i am a a fan of CIO

I agree with this. I didn't do CIO with my older son until he was closer to a year old, and it worked great right away. He was definitely ready, I probably could have done it even a few months earlier & it would have spared us some sleepless nights.
My younger DS is 4.5 months now, and just recently has been having trouble falling asleep on his own. I used to always be able to lay him down awake & he'd doze off on his own, but in the past few weeks he's become much more alert & interactive & therefore a lighter sleeper, so he starts screaming & can't calm himself. I don't feel that he's ready for CIO because he becomes truly hysterical, but I'm hoping in a few months, if he's still having trouble falling asleep, we can try it with him. I don't know if there are other issues at play now, such as teething. But by 8 months old or so, I'd feel more comfortable doing CIO.

I started CIO with my daughter last night. She's not yet 4 months old, but was waking 10-15 times per night and was SO overtired. I figured since she was crying anyway, I might as well try to let her CIO. It's only been one night but she did GREAT last night! Will try again tonight.

STTN help

i didnt read all the comments so sorry if repeating

we started @ 2 1/2- 3 months with naps-- putting him in crib and starting to let him soothe himself to sleep. music helped (sam smith). white noise machine, etc. we started putting him in @ night. we later got a good bedtime routine going (get him dressed for bed & new diaper, 6-8oz, make sure he is REALLY sleeping well)- when he wouldnt take all the food at once (early on) we gave him half then changed him then put to bed. he was up 2 times usually. we waited longer & longer to go get him (unless he was REALLY crying.) i dont consider that CIO really. he woke up less & less as time passed

without any music/ noise he will NOT stay asleep all night now. but, that's not too bad i think!

i read that the later you wait the harder it is :( sorry!

I think every baby is different and what works for one may not work for another. My kids worst sleep was 4-8 months of age due to teething and who knows what. I did CIO (ferber) with my DS at around 6 months and it improved the sleep (wasn't perfect) after 3 nights but he was never a good sleeper. My DD sleep improved dramatically at about 10-12 months of age without doing anything really. Sometimes I think when they are ready they will sleep. I know the sleep deprivation sucks. It was the worst.

I agree with this 100%! My DS is 11 months and his sleep has always been erratic. We too, went through a rough patch between 4-5.5months and we first tried CIO at that point. It helped a little in that it dropped his night wakings down from 5-6 per night to 2-3. He gradually dropped down to 2 feedings per night between 7-8 months and then to 1. He went through a regression at 9 months that took a solid month to get through and now he's finally sleeping through the night over the past 2-3 weeks. I do believe that rough patches of sleep coincide with mental and physical milestones - which has been true for us. The sleep deprivation is so so hard but it does get better. I'm an advocate for trying CIO if that works for your family but I also don't think CIO always guarantees STTN.

Re: STTN help

My DD slept through the night from six weeks of age until I went back to work when she was five months old. She will be two next month, and I am still nursing her when she wakes through the night. I have always wanted to do CIO, but I could never bring myself to do it. So, here I am, at almost two years, still nursing through the night. Now, I am scared that I will never be able to break the habit (which is exactly what it is at this point). I just keep reassuring myself that she will eventually understand that she can't do this anymore. In the meantime, I am a "mombie". Wish I would have done CIO long ago!

Re: STTN help

I did CIO with both my kids. DD1 i did it at like 3 months. I know, some will say that 3 months is way too young, but i tried it out and DD took to it really well. i started a night routine, wash up, PJs, books, music and a dimmed light. She would literally cry for less than 5 minutes before she fell asleep, and i did it for like 3 or 4 days before she got it. She was STTN by 4 months, except for colds and teething of course.

DD2 was a COMPLETELY different story. She had really bad reflux, so i couldnt do it because it just made her reflux worse. I tried CIO at about 9 months. it took about 3 nights. I couldnt go in at all to comfort because it just made her cry worse. I only went in if she started banging her head (which she did so i had to put a crib rail guard - not the bumpers, the cloth ones that go on the rail itself, and then i padded it with blankets).

it sucks, no doubt about it, but it's good for them to learn how to fall asleep on their own. Once they do that, they sleep through the night because they learn how to soothes themselves so when they wake at night, they dont need help...thats my take on it anyway...

good luck!!

Just curious.. for the moms who DONT do CIO. If your child wakes up numerous times a night what do you do. Feed them, rock them, sooth them, let them play? I am just curious. If I didn't let my DD cry sometimes we'd be playing at 1am for 2 hrs..

Some nights my DS (he's 1) wakes up once, sometimes sleeps through whole night and other nights 2-3 nights. Sometimes we just have to rub his back, sometimes rock him, sometimes I nurse him, sometimes he comes to bed with us. He's usually back down and sleeping within 5 minutes of waking up so we don't really mind at all.

My DD will be two next month. She wakes anywhere from two to four times a night (still). She wakes to nurse and once I nurse her, she goes right back to sleep. That is why I still do it. It is fairly quick as opposed to doing CIO for a few nights. I know that the result would have been ideal (her sleeping through the night). I just couldn't do it knowing that if I just nurse her, she will go back to sleep. However, here I am, two years later, and now I have no idea how to stop it.

Re: STTN help

I have a similar issue... my ds is 4.5 months old & lately he has trouble falling asleep in general (both naps & at night). He fights it, he'd rather look around, play, try to get up, etc. Even nursing doesn't get him to fall asleep anymore but he gets so overtired, he'll just cry & scream. I don't yet feel comfortable doing CIO, I'd rather wait until he's a little older. What's worked for me the past few days is that I hold him against & across my chest tight (almost like a bf pose) and he sucks his thumb while I stroke his hair & he falls asleep. I wait about 5-10 minutes until he's in a little deeper sleep to put him down so he doesn't wake right up. I have to do this in a dark, quiet room, otherwise he gets distracted & starts looking around & trying to get up. You could try that. I don't really know what to do most of the time, I just try different things... when he gets a little older (closer to a year old) I will do CIO when necessary.

I wouldn't let them play because that probably would be more reinforcing for them to wake, but I would always try to get them back to sleep. Whether rocking, patting, soothing in whatever way, etc. As little interaction as possible. If time went on and they didn't seem to be getting back to sleep I'd give a bottle just out of lack of something else to do.
