Honest Company Sunscreen- did you hear about this?

I saw this in 2 places today- forgot the first- if it was on the news or what, but this just popped up again.

I don't use it, because I think it's disgustingly greasy and nasty- but I know a lot of people do.

That is the best!!!

I don't' get why the Honest Co dropped the amount of zinc they use. That is the issue, less zinc= more burning.

That stuff is such a runny greasy mess though, I don't know how anyone uses it.

We use the neutrogena pure & simple, DS hasn't gotten burned once, and we're in the sun all the time. I even started using it on my face. My SIL uses it because all others give her reactions. Good to know about the coppertone as well, I'll def try that out next time.

I saw this too. I would be so upset if that was my child.

I use think baby and love it. They have 20 percent zinc oxide and no other active ingredients. I've read amazon reviews that day it sometimes separates and needs to be shaken a lot although that's never happened to mine. I wonder if that's part of the problem with honest along with the lower zinc content.

I almost bought honest sunscreen at Costco when they had it on sale. But it got horrible amazon reviews (and I base most life decisions on amazon reviews). We use California baby sunscreen and it works. It's little pricey so I'd probably go with one of the cheaper options when we run out.

We had this problem. No problem for my son, but I used it and had a pretty bad sunburn on two separate trips to the beach. I wound up just buying regular sunscreen the other day.

Re: Honest Company Sunscreen- did you hear about this?

I had emailed the Honest Company in the end of June when my dd got a sunburn after being in the pool for less than 20 mins with sunscreen on. I did receive an email back stating on how to put the sunscreen on and how often to reapply. I put it on correctly and didn't have to reapply since it was only 20 mins. My dd has never had a sunburn. I switched back to baby ganics and coopertone pure and simple. I love a lot of the Honest company products but the sunscreen is soooo greasy and I don't believe its effective in preventing burns especially in the water.

I had bought it at costco and hate it. It's so greasy. I put it on dd our first day at disney (luckily we arrived at 3pm so it was a very truncated day) and she got burned. Im not surprised at the article. I'm so glad I also brought along a tube of babyganocs sunscreen. I like how it goes on, so that's my new go-to.

OMG this exactly exactly 100%

I used to just use it because it was the thing to do, but it was SO nasty and greasy, I wanted to ask Jessica Alba for her money back. AND it burned their eyes

I also use badger but the water babies is better...Chat Icon

OMG those burns are horrifying. If that was my DD, I'd be FURIOUS. I am not one to sue, but something needs to be done. Just one or 2 bad sunburns in your life can up your risk for skin cancer.
This is no joke.
You think you are doing the right thing, by coating your kid in sunscreen, you trust that it will do what it is supposed to, and then it fails miserably?

That stuff needs to be pulled from the shelves and recalled ASAP IMO

Re: Honest Company Sunscreen- did you hear about this?

See .........this is my thing with this 'all natural, non chemical, organic' etc stuff .......
NOT to say you shouldn't do what you can to keep from poisoning your kids - b/c it's seriously scary the amount of crap that we are somewhat backed into a corner to put into, or on top of our bodies -
however, HOW do we REALLY and truly know that this stuff IS 'all natural' and 'organic' ......I'm not a freakin' chemist !!!
they are allowed to label and market things a certain way and basciallyy LIE - it's disgusting.

And if the normal price for sunblock is $10 for 12 oz .........they should absolutely not be allowed to put a price tag of double on something they label as 'all natural' or whatever BS they're selling as a marketing ploy. IF it's truly natural, and costs X amount more to produce it that way, that's different - but you don't get to take one ingredient out of your normal concoction, lable it 'all natrual' and jack up the price to $20 from the original $10

Sometimes you have to choosed the lesser of 2 evils. Horriffic sunburns, pain, peeling, skin damage, god forbid cancer .........or the chemical in the sunblock. I feel like I"m constantly Chat Icon Chat Icon

Lol!
ITA! This is one of my pet peeves.

Had a smart friend give me "organic" version of purell. Alcohol is alcohol.

I use shirts, shade & sunscreen that works that has chemicals. Same w bug spray.

The only reason I didn't like it was because it was so greasy (and I bought a few from Costco because the price was so good so I was stuck with them). I never had a problem with my kids burning though.

Wow.. I got bought some at BBB earlier this summer when they were having a BOGO. I used it for the first time on DD the other day on her legs only to see if she had a reaction (she has very sensitive skin). She was fine but now I'm so glad she didn't get burned! It was after 3pm so maybe that's why.

The bottles I have are going right in the trash!!

I use it on DS and he's about as fair skinned as they come... never burned once. I do reapply often though. I really wish it wasn't so greasy but that is a problem I have with a lot of sunscreens.

These pics are awful. I feel terrible for these kids. You can't tell me these parents didn't notice their kids skin turning red! JMO but even if it was the sunscreen that failed... the parents are to blame. If you see your kids skin turning red... bring them indoors.

You really know if something is organic if it has the usda organic label on it. Green circle label. All organic means is certain pesticides are not used. It doesn't have much to do with zinc count and if you're going to get sunburnt or not.

There are definitely companies like babyganics who have been accused numerous time of green-washing, I avoid that company because it is all marketing ploys. Overall honest company is a good company, I trust the ingredients in their products. I've used the sunscreen last year and yes while it was a bit greasy no one got burned. If they re formulated maybe that's why, who knows, maybe the separation was the issue or they just didn't get it right. But I've seen recently articles on neutrogena with horrific burns in kids too based off the chemicals they used. It just got voted most toxic. One child had a horrible reaction and neutrogena refused to acknowledge on social media.

I try to avoid direct sun with my child and we use badger sunscreen. Like any it needs to be reapplied often. So far we haven't had problems.

I just saw this on GMA. I can tell you from personal experience that we may as well have put nothing on even though we reapplied every hour. It was unbelievable. I have concluded that sometimes chemicals are not such a bad thing.

I think in a case like this you have to weigh the pros and cons. Some chemicals vs sunburn and sun damage.
That is why I like the coppertone Pure and Simple- it's kind of in the middle.
It rated ok on the chemical scale, but it still has enough to actually work well

Re: Honest Company Sunscreen- did you hear about this?

Wow, this is so upsetting.

I bought two tubes of it because I saw it -- I think at Costco.

I have not used it yet because I had another sunscreen that I was using -- once that ran out I was going to use the other two tubes I bought. But now, I don't think I will take the chance!

Thanks for the recs on Coppertone Pure and Simple.

I'll do that from now on.
