Questions about NYC cabs
DH and I are heading into the city tomorrow for the Auto Show with our kids, ages 6 and 2. Usually we walk over to the Javits from Penn but it's suppose to rain and be yucky out tomorrow so we were thinking of taking a cab. We've NEVER done that with kids so I wasn't sure how it works. DD is in a booster and DS is in a carseat, what happens when taking a cab? I'm assuming they don't tote around carseats with them.
Can anyone share what they do when getting around the city with their young children? Thanks!

Questions about NYC cabs
I have one DD who is 4 and when we were in a cab, she sat between me and DH and I put a seat belt on her. I have never seen a cab with a booster or car seat.

That's what I figured. I'm so nervous about taking them in a car when they aren't secured properly but I don't know that other choice we have.

Re: Questions about NYC cabs
For some reason cabs are exempt from the law. I don't understand why. I would never drive DD in my car- even around the corner- without a car seat, but in a cab it's fine? And the way these NYC cab drivers drive, I fear my own life every time I get in one. I think it's ridiculous IMO I won't go in a cab with DD. Just me, but I won't do it.

I know!! ITA with you!!! I really do NOT want to do it, AT ALL, but if it's pouring tomorrow I don't know what to do. I don't want them cold and drenched in the rain. So frustrating. I wouldn't mind driving into the city if it weren't a weekday, I just dread the rush hour traffic...........and we're not close by, I'm all the way out in Suffolk. I don't know what to do.

I really don't understand how you don't need a carseat in a cab. They are the worst drivers!
User Uber instead. You can request boosters/car seats. So much easier.
And they drive much better!!!

Re: Questions about NYC cabs
They can't drive on city streets any faster then 25 mph. And you're lucky if you can get moving that fast in traffic. Most people I know with kids just hold little babies and put other kids in seat belts.

25 miles an hour is too fast for me to be in an accident with my most precious gift not properly restrained. Not worth it to me IMO. I am pretty laxed, but not with my daughter's safety at all. It's a personal choice but not one I would make..

Driving in shouldn't be too bad this week. And honestly even if you were ok with putting your kids in a cab they are going to be harder to get because of the rain.
There is always the subway too.

True. Maybe we will try driving in.
Is there a subway close by Javits??

Re: Questions about NYC cabs
Just an FYI in case you decide to drive in, parking costs are INSANE by the Javitz during the car show. Like $50 and up, even if it's only a few hours. And this is for parking garages where you still have to walk a few blocks to get there.
I am not going back to the Javitz until they finish the 7 train extension. Too much of a PITA.

I would just take the bus. The M34 goes directly from Penn to the Javitz Center

Parking in the city is just ridiculous. Why can't it just be a nice day out!!!! Hopefully the forecast changes, maybe we'll get lucky and the rain will hold out.

Questions about NYC cabs
If by chance you do drive, download the icon app on your phone ahead of time and use a mobile coupon. I've saved a lot that way. May not apply to the location closest to Javitz tho.
My vote is still the bus. You can get a metro card when you get your lirr tickets.

Not one that gets you any closer than penn station. try the bus - i think the m34 might work? look on hopstop and see what they suggest.

This. You will spend forever trying to get a cab on a rainy day at Penn.

Questions about NYC cabs
I drive to the city all the time and park. Get a Groupon for Icon, (they are cheaper than 2 people on the train). Schools are out, so that makes traffic not as heavy.
The speed limit may only be 25 MPH, but they drive like freaking maniacs in those cabs! Absolutely maniacs.

I once had a cab driver, I shit you not, ask me to please look out my side window and see if I saw any cops because he wanted to make an illegal left turn. For real. I swear I fear my life every time in those death traps!

I believe it!! Sometimes I would just rather walk 20 blocks than even get into a cab!

Questions about NYC cabs
Jump in and take the cab. Car seats are not required and they will not take the time to have you install a seat for just a few blocks.
Mys sister lives in the city and her DS has been in cabs a bunch and never used a seat. They take the subway more often cause its cheaper but when the need arises they just grab a cab.
