I just want to comment from the V birth side, that just because you are having a V birth, does NOT mean it's calm and gentle.
There were no candles burning, no incense, no soft music,
There was me, screaming like my throat was being cut, and the nurse closing the doors because I was scaring the other women in L&D with my God awful shrieks.
There was me, feeling like my assh0le was being ripped open with a steak knife
BEGGING the doctor to please reach up and get her out of me.
Screaming BLOODY MURDER.

In my case, a C section probably would have been a lot more peaceful because I would have been strapped down, numb from the chest down.

Which is why I was very happy indeed with my c-section bc I can't handle any of that shit!!! I know I can't. And I'm tough as balls but not when it comes to that - no no no Chat Icon

This exactly lol. However I do still feel weird saying I gave birth unfortunately because of the stigma surrounding c section births.

YES this is so on point. The steak knife part specifically. This is why I am scared to get pregnant.

Oh my goodness, I forgot about this! Chat Icon I remember the nurse telling me my yelling was scaring the women in labor who were in much earlier labor & didn't have pain like that yet. Eeek! I remember thinking to myself that any future pregnancies would be ruined because I would be nervous the whole time about how awful labor would be (well I guess it didn't deter me that much because I'm doing it again next month but I'm definitely expecting it to be really awful again lol)

OMG!! Now i'm scared! I had an awful labor but the pushing part was easy peasy and I felt pretty much nothing when she was born. Had no idea she was crowning at all. Please let that be my experience the 2nd time around!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Article on Gentle C-Sections:

I loved my c section. No desire for a v bac

Saw my babies lifted over that curtain and disappointment or being cheated were the last things from my mind

The only traumatic part was after I got the anesthesia I felt nauseous and my poor dh caught my puke lol

There are plenty of idiots and I see them all over fb who say awful and really just mean things about people who had c sections

I always just say to myself, yea I had a c section, could have been worse. I could be a giant ass hole

I had 2 scheduled C-sections, 6 years apart. My first was not like the article and my second was. They were both at the same hospital.

My most recent C-section was 10 months ago. I do believe they changed a lot of their policies.

Re: Article on Gentle C-Sections:

Mine was NOT like that- but the epidural didn't work and I could feel them cutting so I was given something else via IV to help with the pain. I think it was Demerol or something.

Anyway, that drug made me really loopy. I vaguely remember them showing me DD- but I was so out of it. When my mom came to see me in recovery I was shaking and she had to re-tell me that I had a girl and she was blonde.

It sucked.

I didn't hold the baby until 10pm- I had her at 6pm.

DH got to hold her pretty much right away *after she was cleaned up since he's squeamish Chat Icon

ETA: It was not a planned CS, I was not strapped down, there was music playing.

Article on Gentle C-Sections:

I had a scheduled C-section which I was not happy about. I wanted a natural birth. I did all the classes and read all the books. My OB said I needed to have a c-section because my DD registered large on the last sonogram. It was very traumatic for me and I still feel so sad about it. I know she was born healthy and all that stuff but she came in a normal size and I feel like my OB jumped the gun. As for my actual procedure there was nothing gentle about it. I was rocked and yanked and clamped. No one even told me when she came out. It was rough.

Re: Article on Gentle C-Sections:

I had a horrible C-section experience and have since met women diagnosed with PTSD because of how traumatic their experience was. So as with anything else in parenting, birthing and recovery from it are very individualized. Don't tell me I am wrong for feeling cheated. Or that I need to get over something that was stolen from me and I won't have the opportunity to ever experience again. Stop shaming other women for how they feel about their birth experience. Try a little empathy. This is what is wrong with women today. If they aren't arguing about bottles and boobs they can't just accept that not everyone will feel the same way they will about an experience. Thankfully I found a supportive group of women who understand the trauma some go through and helped me see I wasn't alone (or wrong).

Re: Article on Gentle C-Sections:

My section was not like the article described at all. I wish it was. I did have an emergency c, but I'm not entirely sure that mattered. I was strapped to a table. DH chose not to be in the room with me so I was alone. The anesthesiologist told me what was going on. After she was born and clean, DH came in. He took a picture with her. They swaddled her and showed her to me for about 3 seconds. Then they took her to the nursery. I would have loved that initial skin to skin time.
Because I had HELLP syndrome I had to go on magnesium sulfate which made me forgetful and loopy. Other than our first interaction of a few seconds I have no memory of being with her until 2 days PP.

I am glad to say though that we did BF for 16 months and bonding was instant once we were able to spend time together. She is 18 months now and without question her mom is her main squeeze.

This part:

And in some hospitals, the curtain dividing mother and baby is clear or even lowered so mom can watch her child emerge.

OMG no way.
Who would want to see their abdomen cut wide open? Their organs all over the place?

I don't think that's gentle! That is traumatic!

I had a V birth and I didn't even want to see her "emerge". My DH accidently saw some stuff he can never unsee down there!

I tried to watch in the shiny parts around the light above me lol wish I could have see what they were doing

Both my sons were born in resporatory distress and were in the nicu 4 days each. So I didnt get to really have those moments with them after birth. My first son i couldnt even hold for an entire day.

I still think my c/s experiences were fine.i would still have preferred to have a natural birth though

I loved mine too. I always wanted one and had no desire to have a V birth. Of course my Dr wouldn't give me a C for no reason but he knew my views.

I wouldn't have had it any other way.

I actually think a Csection when the mother is completely under is rare.

I had the same experience at St Charles in 2010 for my first dd. I didn't have it with my second because of complications with surgery.

Re: Article on Gentle C-Sections:

I wouldn't say I was traumatized by my experience, but I would like to try for a VBAC next time around if possible. I came down with preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome and had to have an emergency c after a failed induction at 34 weeks. I honestly don't remember if I was strapped down or not, but I do remember I was FREEZING until they gave me the heated blankets. DH was right next to me the whole time and neither of us looked behind the curtain. I remember hearing DD cry when she was delivered and then they brought her up to my eye level as they were taking her out to the NICU. DH didn't get to cut the cord, but he went with her to the NICU while I was being stitched up and got to hold her immediately. My catheter was in for about 2 days, so I had to be wheeled to the NICU, and the magnesium from the HELLP syndrome made me so loopy that I couldn't walk if I wanted to. I got to make my first skin to skin contact at probably about 10pm the night she was born (she was born at 4:21pm), laying on the gurney that had been wheeled into the NICU. I started pumping immediately and the nurses gave her colostrum for the first couple of days since I was unable to breastfeed until I was mobile.

I went home after 4 days, but DD stayed in the NICU for 39 days. Every day, back and forth to the NICU for hours a day for 6 weeks. And DD was exclusively breastfed or given pumped milk. THAT was the more traumatizing experience for me.

Would I do it all again?? Absolutely - DD and I have a wonderful relationship 15 months later. She knows exactly who her mama is and loves me to death. But would I prefer something low-stress, more natural, and less emergency???? Absolutely.

I think I had a very similar version of this at Winthrop. Except I wasn't allowed to hold him until I was in recovery.

I agree Winthrop was great, plus the baby never left me or DHs side only twice my whole stay for 2 tests. I had an extremely positive CSection experience at Winthrop.
