Cat Declawing
We are taking our kitten to get neutered next month, and the vet asked if we wanted to declaw (he is indoor only). It had never even crossed my mind that we would. She explained that there is a newer procedure that is less invasive/barbaric than the old declawing procedure of years past. I'm still skeptical but am wondering if anyone has done this recently and what your thoughts are on the procedure?

I would never do it. God forbid that cat gets out and cannot defend itself. Plus I think it's cruel and inhumane. JMO

I don't own a cat but I would NEVER do it. Never. Unless there is a REASON Its cruel IMHO.

I was wondering whether the newer procedure is still "cruel and inhumane" - I don't know details of how it's done. I'm just wondering if anyone has experience with it.
After googling and talking to my husband in the short time since I posted this, we came to the conclusion that regardless of whether it's less cruel and barbaric than it used to be, it's not for us and we are not considering it. Still curious though!

it is cruel for many reasons and VERY painful. Most important, if you cat was to get out and find himself lost or attacked by another cat, dog or other animal he/she has no one to defend its self.
I am so surprised your vet even brought it up without you mentioning it or saying you were having a problem.
Even with dogs, my vet would recommend not cropping a dogs tail even if the breed requires it.

I appreciate the responses but I am really not looking for advice on whether I should get a new vet. My guess is that she asked because my previous cat, who she cared for in her final years up to her death, was declawed - in 1994. When I was 14, and didn't know any better or have a say in it. Or maybe because I have a 3 year old and am pregnant and will have a newborn in the house early next year. Who knows.
Regardless, I said we are not going to do it whether the newer method is more humane or not. I am just curious at this point as to whether anyone has actually done it with the newer procedure.
Not like anyone would answer honestly now!

Thank you. It's been quite an adventure having a kitten after having the same cat for almost 19 years! He's so much fun though, i'm so glad we got a kitten, he's adapting so well to our DD and she loves him to bits.

I never had a cat declawed I worked at two diffrent vets when I was younger and saw first hand how much the poor kitties did suffer from it.
That said. The new procedure is done with a Laser its supose to be less painful with a shorter healing time. It's still the same procedure just done with a laser.

My parents declawed our cats in the 70s and 80s (except our one outside cat, but she turned indoor as she got older-- the birds used to pick on her). I guess there wasn't so much awareness about it then. Did anyone else's parents do this, or were my parents the only cruel ones?
I don't declaw my cats now.

We have had over 14 cats growing up and not one was declawed, and they were all inside pets. And yes, they scratched us all AND ruined almost everything but my parents never opted for it due to the inhumane nature of it.

My parents had our kitty declawed in 1994. I definitely don't think there was awareness about it like there is now.
Our new kitten is still very much a kitten, so I asked the vet for tips on clipping his nails because he is so squirmy, and she gave me some good ideas. Have yet to try since she just cut his nails last week, lol.

I wasn't suggesting the new procedure makes it ok to declaw your cat. Sorry if it sounded that way.
Someone had asked about the new procedure. I just wanted to let them know what it was. It's still the same horrible procedure just a dffrent approach.

as long as your cat isn't scratching at things in the home, like furniture, then I wouldn't get the cat de-clawed.
