LO afraid of public restrooms

So my DD is SEVERELY afraid of the hand dryers in public restrooms, which was a little difficult when all I had to do was change a diaper. At least I could find another location to do that if necessary. But now that we are potty trained it is becoming more of an issue. She cries bloody murder even in restrooms without them and will not listen to explanations that they are none. She wakes up sometimes from bad dreams to tell me about the dryers. I don't know what to do, but potty training is going to be impossible in public if she won't go! I've tried just forcing her to sit but she is so upset she won't even go.

We do keep a potty in the car, but sometimes we just can't get back to the car. She will beg to go to the car instead of a public restroom.

Ideas please?!?!? Anything really...

Re: LO afraid of public restrooms

Could you maybe get her a doll that goes potty and has a toilet and sink .capture the hand dryer sound and integrate it into play.maybe have the volume down low so it's not so obnoxious and after a while it will be nothing to her.maybe do it in baby steps?

Edited for spelling fool= doll

Some of those dryers are insanely loud it sounds like a plane is about to take off.

I just googled it to try to get some ideas to help you. It is a very, very common thing that I'm sure she will eventually outgrow. Toddlers are afraid of the loud automatic flushes and the dryers. Try browsing some other peoples experiences through google

Re: LO afraid of public restrooms

This is my older DD. She recently refused to pee on a road trip between LI and Syracuse! About halfway into the trip, I put her in a Pull Up, just in case. (We didn't need it, though she ran to the bathroom the moment we walked in the door). It stinks, but hopefully she'll outgrow it.

Yes!

DS had to use the restroom at the diner the other day and the blower was so loud it was ridiculous. He was like "mommy! what is that?!"

Re: LO afraid of public restrooms

yes my 5 year old hates when it flushes on you! It's so loud especially the automatic ones. I just tell her to cover her ears. she is getting better about it I try to talk to her when it happens
