trick i use to get my 4.5 year old to listen...
i've been using this trick and it has been really working so i figured i'd share it with anyone who needs...
if i want DS to do something i used to say..."if you go get dressed i'll let you watch tv after." the "if"made him think he had a choice.
now i say....you have 2 choices...the easy way or the hard way. easy way: you get dressed on your own like a good boy and you can watch tv later or hard way: you get dressed while putting up a fight and no tv.
it shows him he has to get dressed no matter what.
ive been doing this for months now that i got to the point where i say..."easy way or hard way?" and he just looks at me...huffs and says easy way. lol
ETA it's important that you follow through if they choose the hard way. And don't be mean about it later. Just say...sorry sweetie, I gave you the choice and you chose the hard way. Next time choose the easy way.
Also sometimes my son thinks he's being slick and won't choose. So when that happens I choose for him and always choose the hard way. Last time that happened he started crying...why didn't you pick the easy way??? LOL

I've been doing the if and then as well and it works... There are times (when he's tired mainly) that it may not work as it should but, we've been successful for the most part.

Way to go !!! That's a common technique in classroom management. It's called forced choice, you give the student a choice but the end result on your terms. It works well with my 3.5 year old also!
