any jewish moms not have a bris?

I'm traumatized after my first one and both DH and I agreed that if we ever have another boy we won't be doing a bris again. I do want to do something, do you think I can do a baby naming ceremony without the bris? I'm not sure if I can find a rabbi to agree to this

I think you can do whatever you want. We have a dd so we obviously just had the baby naming and most people I know do have a full on bris.

Do it in the hospital and then have a baby naming ceremony and brunch. It's really whatever you guys want.

if we have Chat Icon i ideally wanted to have the baby circumcised int he hospital and have the family over for brunch and a baby naming type thing.
lets just say jewish guilt from my family has swayed me to have a bris

you can do whatever you are comfortable with

Re: any jewish moms not have a bris?

DH's best friend is Jewish and his wife is not. Their kids are being raised Jewish, but she's not converting, so I think they had a hard time finding a mohel. Their son was circ'd in the hospital and they're doing a baby naming-type celebration in a few weeks.

I think you can do whatever you want.

Can I ask what was so traumatizing? Believe me I am not a fan and I left the room. DH stayed in the room and the mohel was great. I have heard great things about him and no issues with his results. LOL

Anyway, as others have said, you do whatever you want. You can just do a baby naming without the circumcision part. Your child so your choice. Chat Icon

Can I ask what traumatized you at your first DS bris? I am due in July with my DS and I really want him circumcised at the hospital but my DH is firm on his stance to have a bris. I am terrified!! Chat Icon

that's exactly what I'd like to do. The jewish guilt has been coming in full force but I'm standing my ground. I didn't even want to have the first bris and I was so mad at my mom that she talked me into having one.

Sorry I didn't mean to scare you. Nothing went wrong but at 8 days pp I wasn't mentally ready to be present for my son's circumcision. I wasn't even in the room but it was bad enough hearing him cry outside the room. I went back in and DH was in tears which really set me off. I also had PPD so I'm sure that added to it. Plenty of women go through it just fine and even opt to watch the circumcision but I'm opting to not do it again.

Re: any jewish moms not have a bris?

From a BTDT Jewish mommy, I just want to say that the bris is hardest on the hormonal mommy than on the baby. We had a great mohel and it was literally over in 30 seconds. DS only cried when his diaper was taken off (typical even when it's not a bris just b/c the air is cold) but wasn't crying during the actual circumcision part. I cried much more than DS did, but I attribute that to the hormones, since everything made me cry then.

For those who are thinking about doing it in the hospital, it's obviously your own decision, and it's not a bad decision. But from what I know, it's actually much faster with a mohel - literally 30 seconds vs 30 minutes. IMO, the baby will not remember it anyway, so I'd rather it be over with faster. DS never had any bad reactions, and didn't even seem "off" later that day.

Re: any jewish moms not have a bris?

Me! I had my DS circ in hospital and had a naming ceremony in my home after. I was very happy with it. My husband wanted it done in the hospital and I respected that. IMO circ in hospital was very quick similar time to bris's I have attended!

You can prob do whatever you want but according to Jewish law, to fulfill the mitzvah of circumcision it needs to be done on the 8th day ( certain exception apply). In Judaism having the baby circumcised in the hospital at a day or two old is not the same as a bris. So if that matters to you, you could see if you could take the baby back to the hospital on the 8th day or even just have a mohel come to your house with just you and your husband present.

Thanks for sharing! You didn't scare me, I was already nervous about the whole thing and then when I saw you write that you were traumatized I automatically thought the worst. I am glad to read nothing went wrong but I know its still hard being so soon PP. I am gonna suck it up since I know it's important to my DH.

Re: any jewish moms not have a bris?

My parents didn't do a bris for my brother. He had the procedure done at the hospital. We both had naming ceremonies and bar/bat mitvahs. You do what you are comfortable with! We opted not to circ our jewish son and spoke with a Rabbi about our feelings and he explained that under "jewish law" our son was just as "jewish" as if we had opted to have a circ. done. Again you do what you are comforable with!
