Daycare moms, I have a potty training Q.

So DD just moved into the toddler room at daycare, she'll be 18-months-old tomorrow.

At my orientation meeting with her new teacher, I was asked if it would be okay if they started introducing her to potty training if she seems to be expressing an interest. I said no, I didn't want to consider it before age 2. So the teacher wrote that down in her file.

Today DH drops DD off at daycare and he's asked by the assistant teacher if they can start potty training her.

I personally feel DD is too young and nowhere near ready, I also don't see a reason to rush this. Is there something I'm missing? Is it normal for daycares to push this sort of thing?

Re: Daycare moms, I have a potty training Q.

I know at my center, they pretty much potty trained her for me.
I am not sure if they started as young as 18 months- but it might have been between 18 months and 2 years that they let her sit on the potty there etc.

I know in the 2 year old room they really started full on with it- they sent home a note when she was like 2.5 asking for extra clothes, underwear etc. They wanted me to send her in in a pull up with panties over it and they said they would remove the pull up when the main teachers arrived and have her in panties all day.
She did great with it.

But again, this full court press was when she was in the 2.5 year old room.
Before that it was casual and if she showed an interest.
18 months does seem a bit young for them to be pushing it.

Yes, I think it's just something they do in the toddler room. Basically whenever they change the diaper they sit them on the potty. That's it - I don't see any harm. I haven't started to potty train at home yet but don't mind them putting him on the potty. I think it's good, they see all the other kids doing it so they do it also.

Yeah our daycare mentioned the same about the whole potty thing...
I was kinda eh about it.. she did say she is not one to force... if they are curious then they will allow them to explore the potty...

I know what you mean though... I do think 18 months is young

My daycare does it and I was happy. Why not...less stress on me. They won't force it but if the kids see others doing it they tend to want to try it so why now.

Ours will start introducing it once she moves to the next room but they don't push it.

If my daycare had said she showed and interested or that they wanted to try.. sure why not. I know my kid always does more for others than for me. She ate better with them, napped faster, longer and better with them, just did lots of stuff better with them.

But AJ didn't CARE about potty training at all. They asked her and she said no. So that was the end of that. But she had to be potty trained by 3yrs so my aunt did it in a week (ok we helped but I credit her with the bulk of it). She was always ready just needed a little push.

Id totally be ok with it.

ETA: age? meh there's no magic number. I know kids ready at 1 and others not ready at 3. It's just when they are, they are. My older brother was around 18m and I was at about 1 when we were potty trained. Dad said I HATED being dirty and practically lived on the pot because I meant I could be clean! LOL My brother just liked to pee at cheerios. Kids are all different. I don't think any one age is 'too young'

Ours doesn't start introducing it until 2 (it used to be 2.5 but, they changed it). The 2 year old room doesn't have a potty so they take groups to the potty across the hall to try and get familiar with it.

I would have no problem at 18 months but, it surprises me that they would take on that challenge so young!

Re: Daycare moms, I have a potty training Q.

The toddler rooms (12-24 months) don't have bathrooms, but the 2 year old rooms do. That being said, I'd have no issue with daycare introducing my child to the potty at 18 months.

I found this to be an asset. Some kids are curious because they see the other kids going to the bathroom and they want to go too. I found this very helpful for me training her at home. I know it seems young but if she is in daycare FT and with them everyday its seems less likely that she will revert.

If your daycare is offering, why not?

I just trained my dd at 18 months. She didn't seem ready, but I took a chance and sure enough she trained (it took about a week or so).

It doesn't hurt to try, she may even surprise you!
