18 month old fighting her nap - is this a sleep regression?

My dd all of a sudden has started fighting her nap really hard. Screaming and clawing at me to try to get away when she knows im bringing her into her room for nap time. even fights the prenap diaper change and squirms (more like thrashes) when i try to rock her to sleep. And when I can get her to sleep, she wakes up 15-30 min later screaming. If I get her and rock her she will usually fall back asleep but wakes screaming as soon as I try to put her down again so I end up holding her for an hour, which is a habit I DON'T want to get into, especially at this age.

Yesterday when she woke after only 15 minutes I let her cry to see if she'd go back to sleep on her own. After 25 minutes of hysterical crying and screaming I decided to go in her try to rock her just so she'd get some sleep. But even that didnt help. She let me rock her for 45 min and I could tell she was tired because her eyes kept drooping but she fought sleep and stayed awake. At that point I had to give up because it was getting late in the day.

She's been waking up a lot during the night too, but CIO works better at night. I guess she's more tired so she does eventually go back to sleep. But in the day time she just gets so hysterical that I hate to leave her like that.

I don't think its teething bc she already has her 1st molars and canines and I don't see any sign of the 2nd molars. I've been reading about the 18 month sleep regression and wondering if it could be that. Did your child go through something similar? And if so, how long did it take to pass?

DD is 18 months and we are going through a horrible sleep regression over here. For about a week, she's been showing signs of severe seperation anxiety at bedtime. The only way I've been able to get her to go down is by staying in the room with her until she falls asleep. Nighttime waking is the worst. She'll scream at the top of her lungs. I've been sleeping on the floor by her crib, which I know isn't ideal, but I don't know what else to do. It does seem like a genuine fear most times. I tried CIO for a bit the other night and she wound up throwing up, she was so upset. I am hoping this is just a horrible, short phase! Actually last night she slept through the night for the first time in at least a week. Hopefully we're at the end of it now! So, I didn't really give you any advice, sorry, but at least you know you're not alone!

Yes I think it has to do with separation anxiety with my dd as well. She's more clingy during awake time as well, especially when we're around other people. I did CIO again and it seems to be working for night time sleep. Last night was the first night she sttn in a couple weeks. And she actually took a decent nap yesterday. I closed her shades to make the room darker. I think she was waking up and seeing its daytime and wanting to play. Hopefully today's nap goes well too.

DS is turning 17 months and has had bad separation anxiety at bed time. He recently started taking only one nap for only about 45 min- 1 hr. (sometimes 2 if we're lucky). But the nighttime he does the same thing- screams when he try to put him into his crib.

I don't believe in sleep regression. We all (even as adults) have times we don't sleep well. I think its just part of life.

DD had a really rough patch at 15 months. Started with waking at night, then bedtime, then naptime. We ended up doing CIO for the first time with her and she sttn from night one of that. Naps went back to normal too. Check out troublesometots.com. That was my lifesaver!

OMG i have been having so many issues with my girls recenlty. Denise was always the really good sleeper at night and at nap time but out of nowhere she has been crying hysterically when i put her down in the crib at night. when i finally get her to sleep she will wake up around 3am screaming for someone. i tried CIO one night but then that woke up Elise and i felt horrible. I dont think i can do CIO.

Elise has always woken up once or twice at night but will go back to sleep quickly. But recently she will wake up and only want me to hold her. She also wants nothing to do with her crib, she hysterically cries and one night almost threw up from all the crying.

i cant wait for this to be over!

Does she only take one nap? If she takes 2 - she could be eliminating one of them.

Have you tried letting her forego the nap? Dd is 16 months and wouldn't take a nap today so I said ok, all was fine, she went to bed slightly earlier than normal but that's okay. Also if your dd is on a schedule she may be easy to drop a nap now

Yes she's been taking just one nap for several months now.

The other day when she wouldn't sleep more than 15 min I did eventually give up trying to get her to nap. But then she looked like she was falling asleep before we even ate dinner, like 3 hours before her bedtime. Luckily she made it through dinner and went to bed early that night.

I really hope she's not done with napping all together. I feel like at this age she still needs it.

Re: 18 month old fighting her nap - is this a sleep regression?

DD, in the past few weeks, has done the same thing for naps at home, but she's fine at daycare. I'm wondering too if it's separation anxiety. She's 16 months. It's the first time she has really resisted napping since I established it as a routine when she was 6 months old.

Maybe your lo is letting you know she is done with naps. My dd gave up naps at 18 months. She was fighting me going down for naps. She would scream and scream and after a 1/2 hour I'd just pick her up. After a few weeks I just gave up and let her stay up all day. She does get cranky in the afternoon but by 7 she goes down without any fuss and sleeps until 7 in the morning.
