First of all... this chat lingo is SO much harder to understand than LIW!

Second ... trying to keep the medical talk off this post, I tend to pass out. (i know, i know!)

Backstory: DW and I are going to TTC in the next few months. She has heart problems (well takes medicine to prevent, which she may not be able to take if pregnant). I dont know if i can handle it due to my mental/fainting/vasovagul issues. Basically we are a mess Chat Icon

Step 1- get her on my insurance (i work for an old school company that is self insured, recently getting updated so she can be on it due to obamacare... delays with "feet dragging". Her insurance wouldnt kick in until apr 1 and it doesnt make sense if she will be taking time off after.

Step 2- checkups at all the drs- cardiologist, gyno, etc etc.

Step 3- ??? If everything goes OK guess we are going to just try to go to a sperm bank...

Anyone have any idea how this goes? We had friends that went directly to fertility clinics, etc etc and it took forever but they may have had other issues in conceiving (i dont know too many details)

Do most insurances cover anything? at all? Does Obamacare require them to now?

I am also going to post this in infertility forum

There are no mandates to cover fertility treatment. Check with your insurance plan, if you are lucky you might have coverage for a good amount of stuff, but I don't know how it would work since it's not technically for infertility.

Good luck!

ugh i dont think we will have great luck with that based on how tough it's been just trying to get coverage with this plan. also, I'm pretty sure my boss went through it a few years ago w/ no luck.

my friends had 6 & 4 covered, whatever that means-- 2 separate treatments i guess.. no clue. we havent done anything besides talk to our friends about it briefly, sooo newbie :)

I would just start by doing a lot of research with your insurance company. Unfortunately, as you'll learn by reading here, most plans offer very little with regards to fertility treatments.

Good luck to you both! I hope its a short and healthy stay! Although I have been lucky with insurance so far I have seen other posts that you can apply for grants to help cover costs. So def. check into that too so you have enough time to apply if needed.

Another poster, Champ, went through this, although I do not know if they used insurance. I would try PMing her. Chat Icon

I'd imagine you'd need a fertility clinic since you have to use IUI, but I am not sure. Good luck.

Re: newbie

A couple on one of the ttc FB groups I'm apart of were TTC with donor sperm, and first tried 12 rounds of unmedicated IVI cycles (turkey baster method with unwashed donor sperm, no fertility meds for her wife who is the carrier). After the 12 rounds, the did 2 rounds of clomid/IUI with washed donor sperm, and are now pregnant! They go for their first sonogram next week Chat Icon

eta- most insurance companies (especially those who are self insured) are not bound by the state and federal mandates. My DH's employer funds their health benefits, and there was no way around getting anything fertility related covered. Hope this helps and best of luck!!

Yes I am in the same boat with self insured. What a struggle!
Literally just got the ability to have my wife added to the policy today. They didn't have to follow state rules or even federal -- which I found out step by step, each time I thought we were ok, we weren't. Now we are Thanks only to obamacare and my company pushing to get it amended earlier than they "had to". It may even make sense to have 2 policies because of this...
