Re: Anyone else using a tons of oil this winter?

we were on a balanced plan the last 2 years and it was about $200/mo. electric is about the same.
this year, we switched companies to save .60 or so a gallon and it was bad timing to start the balanced billing-- so we are paying out of pocket per delivery. We keep the heat at 63 during the day and 66 when we are home (timed thermostat). our oil heats our hot water, too. it's a small ranch, i think 14-1500 sq ft?
we've spent $1100 since december, we had a lot left over from the last delivery from our previous company.
when i saw the footprints in the snow to the tank... i cringed. lol. i hadn't been checking the tank but i think we were pretty close to empty (1/8-1/4)

can someone tell me more about a pellet stove- what kind of company installs it? where do you get the pellets? is it dangerous? how much does it cost to get one installed? Thanks!

We have a wood stove insert. My DH found a used one on Craigslist for an amazing price (~$500). He, my FIL, and my BIL installed it. We then had it checked out by the town to insure it was properly installed. My DH gets cords of wood from a person on Craigslist and splits it himself. 2 (uncut) cords is $200 and lasts us the entire winter. As long as they are properly maintained, they are safe. My DH cleans out our chimney at the start of every season and we make sure we never run it too hot. We also widened the hearth of our fireplace when we installed it - I did the tiling.

Ok, so I got my yearly budget and my bill went DOWN $20/month for 12 months.

Total will be about $2,100 until next April.

So glad we have gas. Last year was my first full year in my house and we spent around $1200 for the year. I keep my house very warm too.

Just want to +1 this.. LOVED them! I had them on all the windows included our Attic when I was NY. Super simple to use.
