I'm not calling ANYONE a racist...diversity is about more than just race and Huntington is diverse in many other ways which can account for differences in college attendance and test scores.

C'mon, whenEVER diversity is brought into the picture its based on race.

At any rate, blaming diversity and claiming it scares people is without a doubt a negative comment and simply not true.

Also, the rest of my quote goes into exactly why I would say Huntington isn't a great school district. Here's the rest of my quote, the numbers speak for themselves.

Posted by HoneyBadger
I was talking statistics; I compared Huntington to Harborfields. They're neighboring districts with I believe relatively similar socioeconomic diversity.

Based on the NYSED.GOV site...

Huntington #of dropouts 2011-2012 school year (which is the most current report): 20

Harborfields: 1

# of children attending 4 year colleges for Huntington: 143 out of 248 = 58%

Harborfields: 236 out of 282 = 84%

# of children attending 2 year colleges for Huntington: 84 out of 248 = 34%

Harborfields: 40 out of 282 = 14%

% of students receiving a Regents dipolma with advanced designation for Huntington: 48%

Harborfields: 77%

Of course every school is what you make of it but if I had to choose between schools, I'm going with the one that has better statistics.

Re: Huntington School District?

Not exactly personal experience with the schools but I have taught dance in Huntington for almost ten years now and the majority of my students go to or have gone to the middle school or high school. They come from very different backgrounds and live in different areas but they are all friends, are involved in a ton of different clubs through the school, and all have gone on to four year colleges. On paper the school gets a bad reputation but when I look at the young adults who are coming out of there I'm impressed.

Also, it doesn't help that they're being compared to CSH and Harborfields, two school districts who have been recognized nationally for several different reasons. I'm a pretty decent person but I'd look downright crappy next to Mila Kunis (lol, first to pop in my head) you know? I'm not saying Huntington is a fairy land but neither is life, and that's what school is supposed to prepare you for.

Huntington School District?

My husband went to huntington. We would never send our daughter there. The school was a lot better when he attended but still tell me stories about things happening that were pretty bad and this is over a decade ago. Most people we know who live in the school district, which is a lot of people/families send their children to st pats. A few of his friends from huntington moved to huntington Station and send their kids to Whitman and all seem happy there.

It's not as diverse as you think when most of the people who can afford it send their kids outside of public school. There is a reason. There is major gang activity, that is a fact, the school just isn't that great and this can be proven with test scores and like a previous poster wrote the amount of kids who went to 4/2yr colleges.

And honestly, the 4 vs. 2 year college thing doesn't even bother me that much because a lot of kids who can't swing the tuition are going to Suffolk or Nassau to get their Associates and then heading to a 4 year school to get their degree and not spend as much. That's smart. But look at the number of drop outs, go to the actual website and look at their test scores. It's not good.

As for the gang activity, you're absolutely correct and it does play a huge part in why the people who live in the "nice" areas of Huntington do send their kids to St. Pauls or St. Anthony's, or Kellenberg or Charminade.

They're not going to public school.

The test scores can also be attributed to the fact that there are a lot of ESL families in the area. I can be an honor student here, but throw me into a public school in France and I'd be sure I'm dragging down their numbers on standardized tests.

That's why I find a lot of statistics to be BS. Because there are SO many factors that aren't considered when people look at these numbers. There aren't many districts on LI that even have the financial diversity that this area does--there are kids going to these schools that live well below the poverty line, while the kid sitting next to them in math class lives in a $3 million house in Huntington Bay.

People don't consider the elective offerings, AP classes, athletics, music programs, etc. which are all in high standing.

As for the dropouts--maybe they're a thug. Or maybe they got pregnant. Or maybe they had to get a job to keep their family afloat. All I know is that MY child won't drop out of school no matter where she goes, or I'd personally walk her into school every day and sit next to her in each and every class. Chat Icon

Re: Huntington School District?

Of course there is some relation between a school and it's dropout rate/ percent of students who attend college but I think your child is going to be much more affected by their upbringing when it comes to that kind of thing. The school isn't raising the students, forcing or encouraging them to dropout, or denying them the chance to go to college. Unfortunately it's the parents, life situations, and the students themselves who make or cause those decisions. I have (dance) students who got into and are attending or have graduated from NYU, Berkeley, James Madison, Towson, Oneonta, and many others I'm forgetting. I'm sure there's an impressive list of colleges they were accepted into as well but I don't/can't keep track of all those too. They receive scholarships, awards, and awesome opportunities just like students who attend higher ranking schools/districts.

I'm not saying the district is perfect or that its better than other schools but I can vouch for some truly exceptional students who have attended Huntington. I actually don't know any students who I would consider at risk who came out of Huntington.

Also, I tend to get a lot of students confiding in me as far as what went on at parties, prom, school functions etc and I get equally scary stories from the CSH, Harborfields, and Northport students as the Huntington students. Having a dance competition the day after a CSH prom is like the kiss of death. I've attended Sweet 16's for girls from all these schools and the same stuff goes on during and after the parties.

Sorry, this has gotten long and preachy. I just hate that these students get a bad reputation because they attend school with students who don't have ideal situations to live with. These questionable living situations exist within all districts, neighborhoods, races, religions, and SEC's but some people are just better at covering them up than others.

Re: Huntington School District?

**to the collective YOU, no one specific**

No one is saying ALL of the students in the district have bad rap. NO ONE said that.

I dont understand, regardless of the reasons...truth be told, violence, gangs, and rankings are worse in this district. They just are. There is NO gang activity in my district WHATSOEVER, so sue me for not wanting to send my DC to a place where there is active gang violence when there are other options out there.

Honestly, the ranking of the school is secondary to the OVERALL (NOT student body specific) safety in a district. If there are SAFER less violent schools with NO gang activity, and I have the option....you can bet your ass that is where I am sending my kids to school.

You can be OK with the district, that is your prerogative. You can be able to look past things like higher rates of violence and gang activity. Thats fine FOR YOU. Its not something I want to have to worry about. That is the choice I am entitled to make for MY family. You cant get defensive bc I want something different than you for reasons that are FACTUAL.

You cannot get defensive when other people have different preferences. When they want their kids to be in a SAFER and better performing district. I don't understand why people cant get that. I'm sure that district has it stars, and some great programs, and hard working teachers and students....but so does mine, without the violence and gang activity in the area.

Just as it is YOUR prerogative to be OK with Huntington, it is OK for others to want something different for their children.

I live in South Huntington and my kids go to SHUFSD. We have had nothing but good experiences and I have loved their teachers. I attended HHH k through 12. I can only compare what my kids' experiences to what I had growing up. I feel they are receiving a very good education.

Re: Huntington School District?

How come no one talks about the coke problem at CSH? I know it was rampant when I was in HS. I know CSH is a great school district but it has its problems as well. Every district has it's pluses and minuses, but if you do a good job raising your child, they will do great at Huntington, South Huntington, Harborfields or Cold Spring Harbor.

I don't know a thing about Huntington schools. However, I DO know that plenty of Long Islanders are racist. Just look at the boards here. On the home board, someone asked about good towns. Every "good" town mentioned is overwhelmingly white. Look at this thread-there is blatant racism in it. Maybe it's not the case for this school district, but racism is alive and well when it comes to judging LI towns and schools.

This continually bothers me that it gets called racism. Its not....I wouldn't send my children to an all white school that had the same statistics and gang activity. There are plenty of predominantly white districts on this island I wouldn't choose either.

Maybe Im not seeing it....seriously, please show me examples of racism in this thread...honestly, I would like to know. Maybe Im naive.

I went to Huntington though it was awhile ago. The one thing I can say is the education/teachers were wonderful plus the school offered plenty of class opportunities that many schools don't have

I feel the EXACT SAME WAY! I wouldn't give two sh1ts if the school district was perfectly diverse with regards to race (my dh is 100% Chinese, BTW), but you can bet your a$$ I care if there's (a) violence (b) gangs (c) low performance! I can appreciate that the wealthier "good" schools and areas do in fact have drug problems, but I'd much rather have to deal with teaching my kids the pro's and con's of drug use over worrying over the violence.

I think, like myself, we are curious as to where the "blatant racism" in this thread is. Thats not generally speaking about the island. You did say, "Look at this thread-there is blatant racism in it." Im not being snarky....Im seriously curious, bc maybe Im not seeing it as I should.

Does no one seriously see the "no bueno" commentary between two posters? These are obvious references to the large Hispanic population in the part of town being labeled as "bad." I don't really like to call out induviduals, but it seems like no one is noticing this. This is what I'm talking about, and things like this are the reason so many of us feel racially-charged beliefs define many areas and schools. You can have whatever concerns you want about whatever school or town, but you can't say that race is not a part of the equation for too many people.

For real.

I think a lot of people here have list why the SD isn't the best. Not because it's "diverse" but bc of stats and gang violence.

Why do some people absolutely always throw the racist shit out there?
